Who replaces Rashford?

Rashford can be upgraded but I think it's unlikely he'll be sold, barring a ridiculous offer from someone like PSG. If he does get replaced, it's far more likely to involve a gradual phasing out before we look to move him on permanently.

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to him leaving but I doubt the powers that be will sanction his sale unless it turns out to be financially lucrative for the club. There's already so much to do this summer and I think the view will be selling Rashford creates more work for themselves.

Rashford's stock is pretty low at the moment and we've been here before. He's a streaky player and a new coach could have him scoring 15-20 again next season.

He is an attacking midfielder (who drifts to LW from time to time)

Yes and we need to change our tactical setup imo.
4-2-3-1 will never beat City for the league.

We should go 3-5-2 really or 3-4-2-1 to load up midfield (for control) and strenghten central defense (3 instead of 2)

2 at the back plus a central attacking midfielder (Bruno) is just not gonna work.

Wirtz and Amad would be perfect in that system, Hojlund too.

What's fecking us the most is weakness in central midfield, weakness defending and ineffectiveness from our wingers/ inside forwards.

All three issues are mostly down to tactics, plus like I said to start dominating games in the PL again and not getting played off the pitch by the likes of fecking Brentford, we must adapt and embrace modern tactics that assert control.

I think his situation is already quite toxic. The moderates have all turned on him. Surely more than 90% want him out. It won't be that enjoyable, so he'll be motivated to find a new club. The big question is whether he'll take a pay cut to leave.
Doubt he’ll take a pay cut, Utd will have to construct a deal where he doesn’t miss out financially. Even so I’d still be very surprised if he agreed to go.

Utd will never challenge for the title while Rashford remains a key player.

Hats off to any manager who succeeds to get rid of him.

Dwight McNeil would definately be an upgrade compared with both Rashford and Sancho imo. Sell Rashford to Spurs (or similar) and we'd have money in the bank if we bought McNeil.

then we will only have one LW.
the ideal case will be to sell Rashford and replace him with another hungry LW to compete with Garnacho.

Incorrect. Every attacking players that we have, is either a false #9, or prefer playing on the left. Martial, Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho. Only Pellistri and Antony seem to be comfortable on the right.

If Sancho stays, we still have 2 LW.

Then I'm sure there will be plenty of clubs looking to buy him.

How many clubs can afford him, should be the 1st question. --250-300K
How many clubs willing to give us an attractive offer?

40m? P off
80-100m, lets talk
150m? Can I get you something? Tea or Coffee, or Irish Coffee?

The problem with the "replacement" discussions is that it always assumes it'll be a similar player, with similar attributes, fulfilling the same role within the team. We're not that guy with the hair trying to find the person most like Freddie Mercury we can we sing the songs in the way we're used to them being sung.

We shouldn't limit ourselves to people we think can produce a decent Marcus Rashford tribute act. Replace him with someone competent, even if their ability to run into defenders and lose the ball doesn't make us all nostalgic for Rashy.

With overlapping full backs, Garnacho, Antony...if we did lose Rashford, with all the other issues we have, getting in a wide forward with pace, I'm not sure would be the priority in our attack.

Not replacing like for like is how teams evolve and - hopefully - improve.

considering Martial and Sancho are very likely to leave this summer, how am i "incorrect"?

I think Rashford is still an asset on his day but he's not good enough to be a guaranteed starter each week, if he was a squad player there would be no issue but he's on wages that suggests he is one of the best in the world, which he isn't.

I’d absolutely bite the hand off anyone who offered to cover his wages and pay us £40m cash.

We could sign 3 more effective players with the funds that 40m would free up.

Rashford lacks consistency and it is no use if he has 6 great games a season. His work rate is pathetic as are the excuses by fans why he is not performing. Sell

Garnacho and Greenwood can replace Rashford.

We should buy a young talent to replace Rashford. Heard of this young phenom in the J-League goes by JLingz who might be worth a punt !

Ironically the only club who would buy a player like Rashford as he is, would be us! We're the only club who are seemingly unable to tell when a player is washed up or on a step decline (Schweinsteiger, Casemiro etc.) I don't think this means we don't have to replace him though. He's so bad that playing him is more-or-less equal to playing with ten men, so he can't be allowed to be on the pitch every week even if he's sticking around, and even if he's paid a fortune.

I guess we could play Garnacho (who also needs to improve greatly in some areas) but ideally I'd like to see us play him on the right, bring in a new LW, and keep Rashford out of the squad completely, or at a push, on the bench if we have to. Kvaratskelia (probably butchered that) would be my first choice but he'll be very pricey.

I don't think we will get 80m. Closer to 50m.

No need, because Garnacho is there, and Greenwood will be back on the right.

Garnacho and sign a RW

If we could get Bowen for the front three he would be a good replacement. Garnacho could move to the left then.

I'd rather watch Rashford stink up the place for many more years than have him back.
OK, but don't complain after the many incoming pathetic performances. Too many saints here. I'm sure you guys never make mistakes, so you have the right to judge other people...

I would love it if we were able to offload Martial, Rashford and Sancho in this window. So far only Martial is certain to be gone.

Sadly, I think we'll be stuck with Rashford stinking up the place until the end of his current contract which expires in 2028.

Unfortunately this isn't FIFA and playing with so many at the back simply means we won't do anything other than hope it works and have a very boring game.

Same reason as to why you don't have teams play with 5 up front, you'll probably do more harm then good.

Main issue is what formation creates the best balance and doesn't leave a gulf either side of the central area - 4231 fixes this, assuming you have players who are switched on enough to know when and when not to move up/down

Same people who want Antony gone for his performances and not his own allegations. We live in upside down world.

No way he can be bought from Newcastle. They have the richest owners in football. And currently, going from Newcastle to Man Utd is not exactly going up a level either.

We all know that Rashford NEEDS to be replaced - but the real question is, which young left winger with a good goals output can we sign to upgrade on Rashford?

It is impossible to get Vinícius Júnior, Foden, Doku, Grealish, Jota, Coman, Martinelli, Trossard and Diaz given the clubs they play in (in our rivals/ in clubs clearly better than us)
Heung-min Son is 32.
Sterling and Mudryk are both obvious no for class or age reasons.
Mitoma doesn't look good this year.

So the only candidates left are Kvaratskhelia and Leao? Are these two players available and will they fit us?
Or will we be stuck with Rashford/Garnacho combo for years?

Why does he NEED to be replaced? His goal scoring record whilst predominantly playing out wide is very good with two exceptional seasons (a goal every other game)...two very good seasons (a goal every three games) and three normal seasons (one in four games).

During that period he often played with injury, had intense external criticism of a highly personal nature and played in a number of under-performing teams.

2015/16 - 18 games and 8 goals (0.44)
2016/17 - 53 games and 11 goals (0.21)
2017/18 - 52 games and 13 goals (0.25)
2018/19 - 47 games and 13 goals (0.28)
2019/20 - 44 games and 22 goals (0.50)
2020/21 - 57 games and 21 goals (0.37)
2021/22 - 32 games and 5 goals (0.16)
2022/23 - 56 games and 30 goals (0.54)
2023/24 - 42 games and 8 goals (0.19)

Without a doubt he has been a shadow of his former self this season with some terrible performances and question marks over his attitude. If this is a signal of things to come then I can't see him at the club for very long.

However, we don't know what is going on behind the scenes and given his unquestionable ability, his record over nine seasons, and the fact he is still only 26 years old so not yet at his peak...I'm not sure throwing away one of our best attacking performers over the years after one terrible season is a given.

Sounds very reactionary to me.

But then it's so much easier to criticise players and throw them under the bus rather than get behind them and encourage to higher success.

Exactly. Rashford is type of player who is not a leader and will not give a lift to whole team but Rashford is a player who delivers when team play good. Lets wait how things will work with next manager before selling him.
I am confident that he will be one of best performers under new manager.

But not just this season. Also in 21/22. So that's basically 2 out of the last 3 seasons. Also, he signed a new contract last summer and he's now on £325k pw. You can't have such huge fluctuations in performances or availability on someone so pivotal and expensive. We don't accept it of Sancho, Varane, Casemiro and hence 1 is loaned out, the second is being let go and the third is talked of leaving. Rashford isn't an exception to this high standard of expectations, hence the talk.

I'm not saying he should be sold. I'm not saying one way or another, actually. But you're claiming that this is reactionary off of one bad season, and that simply isn't the case.

He had a bad back injury in 2021/22 and played when often injured so I included it as a bad season but it's really only this season that you could really question his attitude and performances.

Ralf confirmed he had no injury concerns under him , and was dropped for Elanga

Because GOALs are almost all he can deliver and he is not a consistent goalscorer.

He has very little to deliver outside of goalscoring and occasional assists. He is a "luxury player" like how Mourinho described Mata in Chelsea.

He absolutely needs to be replaced or become the world's highest paid bench option if we want to ever return to some semblance of glory.

His return is not good when placed in proper context to the amount of match/in-game resources we devote to him:
- He is not some traditional wide winger who defends, beats his fullback and delivers dangerous crosses all game where scoring is a bonus (think Doku). This sort of player is useful in both transition and possession oriented teams, but is somewhat out of favour in the modern game.
- Neither is he a wide playmaker who breaks set defensive lines when the opponent is set up in a low-block with either penetrative close quarters dribbling, or tight short passing interplay like Bernardo Silva or Hazard.

What he is is an out and out wide forward, in fact a wide striker with offensive responsibility to score from running in behind, cutting in, offer some degree of interplay in the buildup, and only localized defensive responsibility to press from the front.

The team invests more resources in him than the typical wide forward striker:
- Absolved of ANY defensive responsibility, allowing him to conserve energy for attack, and hang on the shoulder of the last defender in transition, often ahead of the center forward
- Chanelling a very large proportion of high-risk passes to him over the right wing, or prioritising slower, meticulous build up in the mid field (Bruno has proclivity for this)
- Allowing him to engage in selfish actions to boost his stats instead of the statistically efficient option

In return he:
- Offers nothing in the buildup except constant turnovers of possession through poor passing, dribbling and decision making.
- Offers 0 defensively
- Offers a moderate return in goals overall, but is actually a very streaky in practice

Such wide forwards/strikers are required to produce prolifically not have "good numbers for a winger".

No way he can be bought from Newcastle. They have the richest owners in football. And currently, going from Newcastle to Man Utd is not exactly going up a level either.

Agree, they have the richest owners, but they are still constrained by FFP.

With the right manager, United is a massive step up from NUFC.

Rashford has scored 130 goals in a deeply dysfunctional era for United.

Whatever you think of Rashford, comparing him to Lingard is wrong. Lingard had hardly played in his last two years for us.

There would be plenty of big clubs interested in him if he was available in the summer.

You're absolutely right with your first two points, but no big clubs will be genuinely interested in him in the summer. Big clubs don't spend that sort of money on a player that has now had two 12-18 month long spells totally out of form.

I think he's staying for the reason of no remotely acceptable bids coming in. The club will hope the new manager can get something out of him again, but they're fools if they don't realise it'll be a short lived upturn, and they need to plan accordingly.

Rashford does need to be replace, and it's not really about the effort, it's more than outside of about a 6 month spell, he's never looked like a natural wide player. He's a striker that got shifted out wide, and his technical ability mirrors that. In a 1v1 I almost never expect him to get past his man. Look at someone like Nani for example. Can be frustrating but I'd expect him to burn his defender 70% of the time.

For me two options stand out currently - Mitoma, and possibly Lookman if he's cheap (not bandwagoning, I've liked him for a long while). Both are technical, fast, can dribble, and can finish. That's exactly what you want in a modern wide player - unlike the likes of Sancho (slow acceleration), Rashford and Antony (just shite).

I really wish we'd just bring Greenwood back and ignore the publicity (not going into a Greenwood debate here, just stating my opion), because we still need a top RW and he fits all the above criteria too. RWs are rare, whereas good LWs are more plentiful (e.g. Kvara), so having that position locked in gives us leeway to go for a LW whilst still having budget for the midfield and possibly another striker.

Anthony Gordon.

Workrate, excellent attitude and mentality, quality and end product.

This is another good shout actually in terms of the profile of wide players we should go for, but we should've been in for him when he was at Everton as Newcastle already paid a lot for him. A lot of posters here thought he was shite, but you could see the technical ability and the pace at which he did it.
