Film Who plays the best villain?

Derek from Stepbrothers

Hated within 10 seconds of screentime

Christoph Waltz - Hans
Murray Abraham - Salieri (not exactly a villain maybe 50% "a villain")

Probably not the best, but up there surely.

Surprised I’m the first to mention De Niro. Cape Fear, Killers of the Flower Moon, Taxi Driver, Meet the Parents, Goodfellas, Godfather 2.

Plenty of good shouts in the thread. But surely you need more than one great villlain role to be in contention?

Lotta great shouts in here by big name actors so let me add a slightly unconventional one:

Mark Wahlberg in Fear
Very rarely have I despised a character so much in a movie as the one he plays in that. Like - an almost visceral hatred for a character that is clearly created for the screen. I wouldn't call him a great actor otherwise though I can respect him. Especially because he found his niche more in more light hearted movies - but in some ways that makes the performance in Fear more impressive to me.

I liked Daniel Day Lewis in the oil movie who's name i've forgotten.
Daniel Day-Lewis is a good shout. Two all-time great villainous performances in There Will Be Blood (the one you’re thinking about) and Gangs of New York. This monologue in the latter is incredible:

Terrible films where DDL became an overacting ham Actoooor.

You think There Will Be Blood is terrible?
Yes I do. OTT bollocks. It was at the point where DDL Lewis just dressed up in comedy period dress, shouted very loudly and everyone fawned over what a great Actoooor he was. He could have walked on, dropped his pants, taken a huge shit and then walked off and the critics would have been fawning over him. In fact that isn't too far off what did happen. Before 2000 he was great. After that not so much, although I have avoided his more recent films like Lincoln, largely because he is in them. Which is a shame because I used to watch films because he was in them.

I don’t think Gangs of New York is a great movie but I think DDL makes it watchable. His Bill the Butcher is campy and pulpy but most great villains are to an extent and it suits the movie.

I don’t love There Will Be Blood as much as some do but I’m surprised you don’t rate DDL in it. Generally regarded as his best role, no?

If you haven’t watched his recent stuff, you should watch Phantom Thread. Fantastic film with a more understated DDL performance.
