Who is the most valuable Player in the World ?

exactly the corporate type of answer that is the root of the United downfall. Football talk replaced by money talk. I think when the word "valuable" is used by football fans, it means in terms of value to his club as a footballer, not how many replica shirts he could shift.

And by the way, it's Owen.... ask Arsenal in the FA cup, United in the league and charity shield, Roma in the UEFA cup, and Germany and Argentina in the world cup.</strong><hr></blockquote>

wake up, get yer nose out of that bin, football's big business son.

I think Raul is overhyped. He plays with the most accomplished team in the world and is a forward, so it's easy to prop him up. Sure he's got vision, and cool but he's no clutch player, like Zidane or Figo. He's never shown anything extraordinary while playing for Spain. His missed penalty (alla Stam) against France in Euro 2000 def. shows that he doesn't have it all to be the best.

Next.</strong><hr></blockquote>

I don't think missing a penalty makes or breaks a player.

No it doesn't. However it can show whether or not you have the mental fortitude to step up to the big plate.

I know it's big business, but what's that got to do with the question 'who's the most valuable player in the world'? If you wanna talk in terms of dosh, it's whoever has cost the most !!!! VALUABLE meant 'best, most accomplished footballer.'

While you state categorically that "VALUABLE meant 'best, most accomplished footballer[.]'" that assumes something I was not sure of at the beginning of the thread. Can you really make a claim for a player to be the most "valuable" if his team (either club or national) doesn't win the big prize? Does the mere fact that a player is the "best, most accomplished. . ." mean that he is the one who will best blend in with the rest of the team to produce positive results? Regardless of sport, we constantly learn that putting the "best" players at each position together does not automatically mean good results, due to a lack of what is commonly called "chemistry." Often a team can survive the loss of it's "best" player more than it can the removal of a less prominant role player for whom there is no adequate substitute.

For the purposes of this thread, I think each poster can define "most valuable" on his own terms, as long as we all understand what standard was used in each evaluation.

Owen is faster than Raul, and thats about it. Raul has better ball control, and better passing. They are both equal in the air, but Raul has just a better all-around game than Owen does. You can't judge a player by just speed. If you did, Poborsky is better than Beckham.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Owen scores and rarely misses easy chances like Raul. I would call Owen a lethal finisher but I wouldn't say that about Raul.

Agree. Owen has improved a lot on other aspects of his game, esp. his finishing.

Would have thought Keane is more valuable than Beckham. Look how shit you are without him :)

Raúl is simply a better and more complete player than Owen. Trust me, I atch him playing every day here in Spain(I also see Owen) ;)

Bert Konterman.

Shevchenko combines Raul's skills with Owen's speed. If he played for Madrid, I think he would score more frequently than Raul does now.

Owen has improved his overall game a great deal though. Just look at the goals he scored in WCQs, only one came as a result of his speed(England's 4th in Munich).

Dunno really, probably a toss up between Sutton or Hartson as to who can manage to avoid tripping over their feet the fewest times per game in between spitting at opponents.Of course its BECKHAM. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

Depends what you mean by the most valuable;

a) from a commercial view?
b) from a footballing view only

The two most commerically valuable players are probably Beckham and Zidane.
