Who is the best young actor/actress?

Batman's a pretty shit role that doesn't require any acting, don't know why Bale wasted his time on that guff. But check out his other films, especially The Machinist.

Batman is probably the largest two pay cheques of his career at this point in his career, other than Terminator Salvation, the role he got was probably due to his superb portrayal of Batman.

True, hopefully now he has enough money to start focusing on acting again.

I notice there are a fair few votes for Christian Bale on here but I'm not overly impressed by him at all. He was good in American Psycho, but his performances as Batman have been woefully bad. I dont think there's any actual acting involved, he just grunts through the entire film and is fortunate enough that Heath Ledger was fanfeckingtastic as The Joker to make the film a success.

Speaking of Heath Ledger, at 28 years old at time of death, I'd put him ahead of Bale in a vote.

You wouldn't be saying this if he wasn't dead. Bale is much more talented as an actor.

Strange argument. There are plenty of dead actors who I don't rate. Whether they're alive or not doesn't affect my judgement. It's a matter of opinion. My opinion is that I don't rate Bale, but I do rate Ledger.

He is also possibly the worst actor in Hollywood.

Nicole Kidman must surely get a best actress nomination*

* apart from being too old and utterly crap

It concerns me that this was taken at face value.

Either a) you lot wouldn't reconise the difference between a good actorand a bad actor if you life and the lives of the english speaking world depended on it or b) you think I am insane and that you had better humor me in case I turn violent.

How could you say he was shit at Batman? Yeah he had a voice for Batman but that made sense more than him talking as if he was just a guy in a fancy dress costume...

Also he was Bruce Wayne who would act like a twat to keep his reputation as a playboy millionaire intact. It was a fairly complex role to be honest and he nailed it.

He's a great actor.

He plays the same role in everything he's done so far. He's set to star in the upcoming Scott Pilgrim film, which is a different character to the one he's done in every single other thing, time will tell if he can actually do something other than the shy awkward shtick.

True, he's not one of the best by any stretch but at 21 he's got plenty of time to develop. Even if he sticks to comedy he'll definietly do well imo.

Christ no. At least not his god awful performances I've seen.

Like?

He was one of the few saving graces of Australia, great in Lord of The Rings, stunningly good in Getting Square and The Boys.

I don't think much of him either. In fact I've just decided that he's rubbish.MUst be the same geeky sounding voice in every film.

I don't know about one of the best, but I watched Gone Baby Gone the other night, and Casey Affleck was really good in it. He's a young 'un I think.

Micheal Cera hs something about him, his genre is more comedy based but for me has great timing. At 21 he has a bright future ahead of him I believe.

He always just plays himself though.

It was perfect for George Michael in AD, and I still like Cera simply because I love that character, but it gets a bit tiring.

I've only seen him in Jesse James, he was quite impressive.

Both have been in decent, but not amazing films. Neither have had a really 'big' role, you know what I mean?

I think we're both moving astray from the original question presented. You asked for the "best" in which I unwittingly responded with two actresses who I think are just very talented while you cited 'amazing films' or 'big roles' as criteria, which I really don't think is necessarily true.

But if you put a gun to my head, I'd go with Kate Winslet. I can recall numerous spectacular performances that she's given while also not being able to recall any lukewarm performance that she's given even in some of her shit films.

I think Ryan Gosling is pretty near the top for me. I thought Wes Bentley was going to be a break out star as well, but he hasn't made anything of note in years.

Think Shia Labeouf is getting a tough time here, to be fair. He's just made too much "fluff" in the last couple of years. Something he admits to. AGTRYS proves he can act and Wall Street II may be a move in the right direction but, unfortunately, he's roped in to Transformers 3 and Indiana Jones 5 first so his chance may come and go.

I'd put Kate Winslet in the previous generation...and also don't really rate her as an actress. She can act, sure, but she always LOOKS like she's acting. Like she can smell that Oscar nomination and she's gunning for it.

Yeah I actually think he is quite decent given his age, that said there are better out there. That said there is nothing wrong with becoming a huge movie star before you do great roles in other films. Transformers 3 will be huge, Indiana Jones 5 will be huge as long as it isnt as shit as the past one.

Affleck is very good...and can do comedy too. I'd call him & Gosling at the minute...McAvoy's also a good shout cos his range is so good

Bale is good, but always variations on the same intense character...American Psycho is the only thing I've seen him in that was truly impressive or charasmatic. Haven't seen Harsh Times though, he's apparently great in that

Affleck was great in The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford as well
