Leaving aside the older and obvious choices like Pacino and Streep, who would you say is the best actor and actress of this generation and why? When I say 'young' in the title, I mean youngish, let's say the cut-off point is around 35.

they're all crap.

Obviously you've not seen the acting masterclasses of Shia 'irritating wisecracker' LaBeouf.

Things are pretty weak on the actresses side alright, I'd look at Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway as two of the few who have any actual range or screen presence.

Aye Christian Bale and Ellen Page are two who spring to mind. Ellen was superb in Hard Candy, one of the best young performances I have ever seen.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio is a fantastic actor as well, though not sure if he is over 35 or not. He's made some of my favourite films recently. Body of Lies, Blood Diamond, Gangs of New York, The Departed...his CV is pretty impressive.

Natalie Portman's good too, although she has done quite a few dire performances in her time.

Doesn't hurt that she's absolutely stunning either.

He's the worst of them. "Crap" is too kind for him.

I disagree, this plonker from Star Wars is

Shia comes a close second

I'd agree with the Christian Bale comments.

Not a great deal in terms of female leads, i've seen an awful lot of films lately and I can't recall any standing out. Only Megan Fox and that was simply because she's stunning!

Elba is just one year too old for my unwavering criteria. Also, I have always tried to convince myself that Hayden Christiansen is a poor CGI effect, so he is ineligible.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Kate Winslet. 33 years old and she's already been nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winning one of them.

Bale and DiCaprio are the obvious choices for male actors. Edward Norton is 39, but I'd group him in the same generation as them; his performances in Fight Club, American History X and Primal Fear are almost flawless.

EDIT: Okay then, ignore Norton if we're sticking by that age limit.

Leonardo DiCaprio has turned into one of my favouite actors. Which is quite funny, considering what the general opinion on him was after he was in you-know-what. He's been in some terrific movies the last few years, though.

Christian Bale is another favourite, and like DiCaprio he just makes this list (they're 35 and 34 respectively).

Would probably go for Ryan Gosling.

Do rate Roxanne Pallet though, what a goddess  Haven't seen her acting, mind, just photos

Leonardo Di Caprio is the same in everything he does except he occasionally adds a wandering accent. At least he doesn't look quite as much like an extra in Buggsy Malone these days.

Nicole Kidman must surely get a best actress nomination*

* apart from being too old and utterly crap

Gangs Of New York is a mess, visual diarrhea. The Departed is also a steaming mass. I'm struggling to find a reason to think of Di Caprio as anything other than a turdburger.

Whats eating Gilbert Grape is the only possible reason and since then his primary claim to fame is taking decades to age 4 years.

His mum finally let him grow the goatie as long as he ate his greens and did his homework without being nagged.

Probably.

He is aging the right way but at the same pace as the plot in Benjamin Button which is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest film ever made at 14 week, 3 days, 12 hours, 14 minutes and 8 seconds.

Allegedly.

Although to be fair he should have won an oscar for The Man In The Iron Mask.

Megan Fox for the females, cannot act to save her life but makes for a good salivating session in front of the screen.

Freddie Adu for the males.

Is David Caruso under 35, surely he is in with a shout if he is?

I notice there are a fair few votes for Christian Bale on here but I'm not overly impressed by him at all. He was good in American Psycho, but his performances as Batman have been woefully bad. I dont think there's any actual acting involved, he just grunts through the entire film and is fortunate enough that Heath Ledger was fanfeckingtastic as The Joker to make the film a success.

Speaking of Heath Ledger, at 28 years old at time of death, I'd put him ahead of Bale in a vote.
