'tis a silly place
I was talking about this with a couple of people, I nominated Berbatov as having amazing first touch, whereas he said van Persie, but I've never noticed him as having incredible control. Who would you lot suggest?

Messi.

Ronaldo is probably one of the best the Premiership has to offer, amongst various others.

Berbatov, Messi and Ibrahimovic. Berbatov has the best touch and Messi is the best at keeping it under control while dribbling, Ibrhahimovic combines the two well.

Dirk Kuyts first touch is amazing...................................he's just not fast enough to catch the ball to take a 2nd touch.

Playing in Europe these days, let's say.

And Messi is of course correct, but I was a little unclear - can we narrow it down to first touch, as in bringing a ball under control, as opposed to running with it.

Ahh, now that's a different kettle of fish.

....Messi.

Messi's first touch is exceptional, the way he takes balls down and controls them and sprints away in the next second is brilliant.

Fair enough, I haven't seen much of Messi lately. Any other names beyond him and Berbatov? I still don't know where my friend got van Persie from.

Berbatov has the best first touch, in world football.

Just watch Modric. And you cant argue with Kranjkar either.

I have done for the past few weeks, someone with supposedly an amazing first touch(it would have to be amazing to be mentioned in this thread) would have stood out a hell of a lot more regardless of how his team played. Look at Berbatov, we've played badly but his touch was evident on a number of occasions. Kranjcar's touch is nothing special, I like him as a player though.

You seem to be mixing up "very good" with "best"

You see, there are load of footballers with very good ball control, only one or two deserve to called the best. And chances are they're not playing for Spurs or fecking Pompey.

By the way, pains me to say it but Joe Cole would be up there.

I was thinking prem only. I would say Modric has the best ball control in the world, alongside Berb and Messi.

The dribbling thing is interesting. I maintain that Ronaldo isn't that great a dribbler. He's got quick feet and amazing pace but he can't manipulate the ball like Messi.

When it comes to pure dribbling skills, I would put Ryan Giggs right up there.

Yep, I'd agree with that Pogue.

Always wondered what ball control really meant.

Beckham, Bergkamp and Messi are three of the best 'controllers' of a ball i've seen but each for a totally different reason. Is ball control a broad description or are we talking about who can do the best keepy-uppies?

Berbatov has a great touch. Van Persie can do amazing things with a football but he never strikes me as having great 'control'.

Dos Santos
Ronaldinho (still does, just the rest which let him down)
Messi
Zlatan

But the best EVER, imo...

SOLSKJAER. If my internet wasn't being gay I'd find a vid on youtube with him in.

It is true, there is a lot of subjectivity in wide spread 'footballing terminology'.

Good point, I was a bit vague.

Let's say one of your players gives a difficult ball to a team mate, who would that team mate be if you really needed the control to be spot on?

If I'm honest, be it first touch, the ball is dead instantly under control and then dribbling as well ......Hleb has got to be in the top three in world football.

However after that he's poor - final ball, shooting ,goals
