Which striker should we sign this summer?

What about the young striker at Lille, would he be someone that we should target?

Because he’s scoring goals in Scotland? Don’t see the hype on Dembele as well, his record in France is like 1 every 2 games. Lacazette had 1 to 1 goals to game over there and can’t score in the Premier League.

I see..... like Haaland was only scoring goals in Austria.

Edouard is physically strong, has a great link up play, and is a natural goalscorer.

Having watched how we perform with a target man like Ighalo in the team, in that he very rarely ventures outside the width of the 18 yard box, and always provide that wall for players to play off him, I would like someone like that. Obviously someone more quicker and sharper than Ighalo, but I'd like to see that style of striker.

Not sure what striker out there could provide that for us, though.

Haaland

I can see us keeping Ighalo on - as a stop-gap, in the hope that we'll be in the mix for Haaland Summer 2021.

It's possible
If fit rashford is probably going to start most games
Greenwood will play more next season so between him and martial they will play most games
A right winger perhaps with James getting games in rotation
Ighalo (or Sanchez back if nobody will take him) to fill in now and then
If haaland progresses at the rate he is though I think we probably won't be in the mix

Id like Diogo Jota.. could provide Martial with a good fight for the spot, and he would fill in for Rashford on the left.. good age, has setteld in England, a real pain to play against.. it makes alot of sense.

I know it’s only been bits and bobs here and there but Ighalo, actually looks like a very useful addition. Obviously I want to see more but given what he’s been doing so far I wouldn’t mind having him around to be back up next year to Martial.

He'd have to take a substantial pay cut to play here next season. He's getting massive money in China.

Calvert-Lewin is a target man. I don't think we need that type.

Martial is a striker. He's extremely capable of running in a straight line to latch on to a high pass. And when he does find himself in the box with the ball at this feet, I'd bet on him to score every time. But again, this is not the type we need to add to the squad.

What we need is a centre forward: a player who dominates the box, pulls defenders in every direction in order to make space, and then turns poor passes into assists. Chicharito is the archetype, although I'd prefer someone who can pass a little better.

A player in the final mould would get the best out of Rashford, James and Bruno. I like Edouard, of the players we've been seriously linked with.

Ighalo would do. Perfect age and profile. Keep playing Greenwood and Martial, Rashford as back up, even Bruno could play as a false 9. Focus on getting Sancho and a midfielder. Eventually if the opportunity presents itself, sign Haaland or someone clearly better than our options. We can afford to wait it out a bit on a striker if Sancho comes here, imo.

Why isn't Vardy talked about much? He's old and still class which would give the likes of Martial/Greenwood more competition and better development. Could even see us switch to a 442 if we sign him and Sancho with Martial and Vardy up top and Rashford and Sancho flanking. On a good season I can see 70 goals alone from that combo.

There is no point targeting any Prem players - Anyone decent would be 60 mill plus and thats a Pukki level player. Richarlison and Calvert lewin you will be talking 80-100. Not happening. Werner is a no brainier if we could get him for 60 mill euros. But if not Greenwood and Martial with a cheap back up will be fine for another season simply because we need to spend in other areas first. Whilst I like Ighalo I think we can do better as a back up striker. Not sure who but there must be someone at around 30 mill that can do a job for us.

What about the man himself? We get a one year loan, he gets to stay in the Prem and they can have him back if they come up or sell him off if not and we send Norwich a decent loan fee and Dalot for a year on loan where he can replace Aarons who I assume will be at Spurs or Everton or somewhere like that next year.

If Fulham don't go up, Mitrovic on a loan or permanently is also interesting. He'd certainly give us a different kind of striker, we could even play 4-4-2 at times with him and Martial/Greenwood up top and Rashford out left.

I think if Ighalo agrees to take a pay cut, then he will be made permanent, and that does seem to be likely.

That will hopefully give is the chance to look at our other positions. One less transfer saga is always welcome, and getting things done quick will be vital.

Ighalo has done enough to at least warrant consideration.

Another question is what type of striker do we need? Backup striker for Martial like Ighalo that warms the bench but can still do a job when called upon? Starting striker like Jimenez or Kane or Icardi to lead our line while Martial is on the bench? Or a striker that serves as solid competition for Martial and keeps him on his toes like the Shaw and Williams competition earlier eg Jovic Dembele Edouard

Sign Ighalo for low fee, if he willing to take pay cut.
Then use all the remain fund on Sancho.

It's going to be Igalho, he's scored 4 goals which will be enough for us to sign him, likely on the cheap and he'll be happy to be the bench striker. Everton would fleece us for Calvert-Lewin and I'm not sure about him yet, the only 2 Strikers I really like (Werner and Martinez) really thrive in a 2 and Ole doesn't seem to want to play that system regularly.

So my hope is we only pay a nominal fee for Igalho and spend the money on another versatile attacker to add to (hopefully) Sancho and a DM buy while selling Lingard and Pereira.

Id will be Ighalo, and it should. The squad needs big investment and a striker should be 3rd on the list of priorities. Martial is 24y. And was on a decent run (goal wise) ighalo as backup is ideal for next season. Use the money on a propper right winger and a midfielder, sign a striker and a cb in the summer of 21.. we are not far away from a titlerace.

That makes sense. We don't want to overkill. I would rather we focus on 2 positions every summer window. Thoroughly research and get the best people.

Sancho + Grealish makes sense this summer. In the summer/winter window, focus on a defensive midfielder and defender.

I'm happy to have Ighalo up top, I think Rashford, Martial and Greenwood will also be getting better.

I also think James will get better.

Plus Bruno, Grealish and Sancho would contribute to plenty of goals and assists.

Good call but I think he is overpriced and already 26, That kind of investment on someone like Sancho would benefit our team in long run. On top of that Kane's recent injury record is not that great.

Yes, or a striker, if greenwood dont develop, Sancho and Grealish would be mint.. 2 first team signings and a squad player prospect should be the goal for future windows ( like Maguire, AWB, James)

Hows Jovic doing

Massively struggled and they have Mariano Diaz as a backup poacher type too. My guess though is if they loan Jovic it will be to a team where he's guaranteed minutes, which we aren't if Martial is around. Madrid are smart they mostly don't waste loans and some Europa league team in Italy or Germany will happily let him be their only 9. They could also sell him to some cash-rich team that can't easily get quality like if Everton have to sell Richarlison and have money to pair him with Calvert-Lewin (Ancelotti doesn't mind a 4-4-2 historically) or an Italian side.

But he makes a lot of sense. We need a poacher and could get an option to buy. Madrid might want Pogba. If that happens he is one of the most likelier players we'd get offered in part exchange (even if just a loan with option to buy) along with Isco or Bale if we can't get Sancho and want a RW or maybe Mariano to be Martial's backup for another year of not throwing Greenwood fully into the fire.

Cheers appreciate the insight

Any ideas what Jovic is struggling with, is it the league quality, settling in, style and system of play doesnt suit? I know he played off a target man in Haller for his last team

Just had a quick read and found this
Could his movement be a problem ala Martial?

Kiyan Sobhani@KiyanSo
The main difference between Jovic and Benzema in one stat. They both had 16 touches tonight. Benzema came on for Jovic in the 73rd minute... Wrote about it in yesterday's column. Benzema is relentless. He has to be in every build-up sequence. In turn, not cold in front of goal.

I'm thinking Odsonne Edouard right now. A lot of the things Igahlo brings to the team, but also he's like a powerful CF version of Martial without the speed and at 22 he has plenty of time to improve. 3 goals in 6 games in the europa for Celtic this season and played well against Lazio twice and got 2 assists in those games, Lazio being the team 1 point off of Juventus at the top of the league.

I like Hwang Hee-Chan at Salzburg too but he wouldnt be the same type of striker as Ole seems to want, like Igahlo with a physical threat

Kane, Aubameyang, Jimenez, Icardi, Lacazette, Cavani, Werner, Dembele... I dont remember transfer window with more quality strikers on the market.

If you want Ighalo as backup that means Martial will be leading our line again. Are you confident in him doing that consistently well?

Rashford ?

He's even worse than Martial at leading the line.

I personally think we'll try and either sign Ighalo permanently or extend his loan for another season.

Next Summer, if Haaland is moving on, Ole will want us to be the equation.
