Which position is our biggest problem?

CM. Just like it has been since about 2010.

How many CBs have we bought and scapegoated since we last signed and fielded a couple of genuinely good CMs?
 
As many have said, central midfield. Put a functioning midfield in front of Maguire/Varane/Lindelof and we won't look nearly half as bad.

Pretty much everywhere, I don't think Ralf was wrong on this. The midfield is a problem, the full backs have been awful, all four of them. The forward line looks light and too reliant on an aging striker, no matter how great he is that's not a good sign of health. Centre back has question marks over it, can Varane improve and who partners him?

It's hard to even say what would make the biggest impact, I guess the conventional wisdom would be a midfielder, but I don't see one midfielder making a dent in the problems which underlines my point - they're all big problems. We need to inject some quality over the pitch.
 
Centre midfield has been neglected since the days of Fergie.

I've forgotten the last time we had someone of Roy Keane or Bobby Robsons abillity in midfield. Its been far too long.
 
Midfield, pretty much ever since we let Herrera go, honestly. And I don't care what anyone says, Fred and McTominay are atrocious and can barely play football but they can run I suppose, Matic and Pogba can play football but can't (or don't in Pogba's case) run, and there is no combination of those players that don't get overrun by sides even in the bottom 3 of the league. Ruben Neves pissed all over our midfield, Liverpool and City basically play like we don't have one - and Brighton too, as of Yesterday - and even Norwich bossed us for christs sake. As bad as our defence has been, when Shaw-Maguire-Lindelof-wan Bissaka were back there we were at least top four level (which was why we actually achieved top four WITH them), and I don't think there's a lot wrong with Bruno and Ronaldo as a 9-10, though what you put either side of that is questionable.

This is so true, unbelievable to think. A good midfielder is critical at this stage but not far behind is the right back position. At least we tried with AVB but we could have found much better full backs for literally half or a third of the money.

BUY A feckING MIDFIELDER FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST.
 
We all know it's the defensive midfield role that is THE, but not the only, hole in the squad.
 
CM. McFred are nowhere near to good enough and Bruno plays like a striker which means that we're playing with 2, very average, CMs. I'd go for Sangare (28m) and Kamara (free). Then we should switch to a STK, CB (Jones and Bailly are leaving + Varane is injury prone) and FBs (all of them are shit)
 
CDM has been our biggest problem for 2 years at least and I have no idea how a club like Manchester United went 2 seasons into a Premier League campaigns not addressing the issue. I mean it's such an obvious and blatant handicap, and footballing people (managers, scouts, and whoever else the feck talks about recruitment) have overlooked.
 
100% central midfield.
Two players needed there, then striker and full backs.
 
Midfield and I think we need two new midfielders. McTominay will never be good enough. He doesn’t defend adequately as his positioning is poor, avoids the ball so we can’t control the game, it invites pressure on an exposed defence and stops us creating chances. A lot of our problems would be solved with a good midfielder.
 
I don't even have a clue anymore. I'm just hoping ten Hag knows where the problems are.

The captains position.
Unless we have someone who actually acts like one, takes control of games and has the guts to tell players what they need to hear, we will always miss out that final few percentage points.
 
It's so obvious. Look at all the teams in the premier league and tell me when you prefer McFred over their CMs. We've been bossed in midfield by pretty much every team.

McFred offer no strength in defence, their defensive positioning is lower than championship level, yet they offer zero going forward as well.

With Uniteds status and the wages we are capable of paying this should never have been allowed to be status quo for so long. Both defence and attack starts in midfield. The whole team would be elevated with two quality CM signings.

They don't need to be world beaters. I would be happy if you listed them in order on paper in six months if they were in the top six duos, not bottom six as they are now.
 
DM, CM, CB, LB, RB. I think we need to focus to address those five areas first before trying to buy new attackers. We need to upgrade our midfield so we can keep the ball better while our defense so we can stop conceded too many goals and also improving our progressive ball from the back. Controlling the midfield issue, defensive issue, and progressing the ball from the back issue have been our problems for ages. If Ronaldo leaves then striker would be in the list.
 
Midfield needs most attention with 2 top players wanted A DM ( kamara) and a Box to Box Midifielder ( Milenkovic Savic) My preferences.
We also need a CB and a RB as we concede far too many goals.
A CF and a goalscoring winger are also needed.
Yes 6 signings this summer.
 
The McTominay position.

He can't pass through the lines.
He can't pass forwards.
He isn't particularly clever when breaking up play.
He doesn't seek the ball from his teammates.
He's actually quite lazy, but when he does bust a guy it looks good on occasion.
He has no idea how to help shield he defence.
He has no idea how to link the defence to the attack.
He can't distribute the ball to the wingers and full backs in their stride.

It's fundamentally the biggest problem in the team for me.

Whenever he has a great game, which is 1 in 10 at best, we are always excellent.
 
United needs a better midfielder. Mctominay isn’t a midfielder who can bring United to be one of the best teams in the world like in previous decade. Another one is probably a better left back, in modern days, fullbacks are very important especially in attacking phase( overlapping and crossing).

The most important things of all, off ball movement.

Has to be CM. We get dominated in there by any half decent team. Close second is fullbacks, probably in the bottom 5 teams in the league for both positions.
 
We need a right back who can attack as good as he can defend. Unfortunately, AWB hasn't improved much since he joined.
 
Clearly midfield once matic and pogba are gone.

I'd imagine the new manager will play Donny and Bruno, but he will need at least another player desperately
 
Looks like this is what the club see as the four priority position. Not sure whether this has been discussed with ETH or it hasn't been discussed but actually purely Ralf's opinion where he see which areas should be the priority this summer.

Got it in one... good CM who can defend as well as start things off and arrive late in the box ( another Bryan Robson a past-master).
I would have broken the bank to go for Kante, but now its got to be Rice!
