Which new goalkeeper would you want to sign?

Can't say Maignan did anything to particularly impress me in what I saw of the CL semis. Not sure he's right for the Premier League

You didn't? (At least the 2nd leg).

- Good reflex save from a close range header
- Good strong save early on in the first half
- Ploughed through some players on a free kick and punched the ball away to safety
- Played good passes on the ground to the full backs, center defender/midfielder
- Came out of his box more than once to sweep the ball and stop a dangerous attack

Saw most of first leg but not as much of second. Didn't spot the ploughing thru players or sweeping. The saves... well, DDG isn't too awful at those!

Unpopular but I would give Henderson a season to prove himself, if it doesn't work out ship him and De Gea next season, unless money is no object and then I don't know.... anyone but De Gea

He has to apologise for interview then

If Henderson can be reintegrated next season as first choice then renewing De Gea should not even be considered let him leave he has overstayed his welcome .

In fairness I can sympathise with Henderson or any player being disillusioned at the end of the Ole/Ragnick year
Not sure he said anything which needs an apology, and if he did it will all be forgotten if he performs, the headline was Henderson hits out at ETH, interview itself nothing

Always liked Lafont but he never seems to be mentioned. Think he’d be a great keeper for us

ETH has confirmed De Gea is staying, but that he doesn't promise he will be his no1 for much longer.

Bart Verbruggen or Lucas Chevalier, two young GK's that would likely be cheap and are breaking through now, will likely be two top top keepers at a top club in the near future, get one of them now and work their way into eventually pushing DDG out.

Do we know how long his contract is for?

It suggests to me that we're bringing in a promising younger keeper or he's giving Nathan Bishop or Radek Vitek a chance, though that seems unlikely

What about that Georgian guy

His interview with Henry Winter he didn't exactly say this , but more like He can't guarantee De Gea though he wants him to stay as At club like United there should always be competition for places and he wants two good players in every position .

No more Giving Chances FC please. We need to be ruthless if we are to rise above the rut of mediocrity we are presently stuck in.

I was thinking about this earlier, and realised the thing we want to avoid is another Tim Howard/Ben Foster situation. Those two were talented goalies who might have become decent enough for United in the long run. But they lacked the mentality to be the #1 at a megaclub. Gary Neville often talks about how the 'keeper position at Old Trafford is the hardest job in English football and I think that's something we need to always bear in mind.

If there's one player who won't be fazed by the role, it's Emi Martinez. He might not be the best on paper, but the risk of him shrinking in the limelight is pretty much 0%.

The way he commands his area would be a breath of fresh air. It would be a huge weight off our CBs shoulders knowing that he's claiming any cross that's remotely near him. And as much as his cockiness irks me, I'm sure I'd have no qualms with his behaviour if he was our keeper! My only reservation would be his passing. Whenever I watch Villa, he seems to go long. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I don't recall him being capable at playing out from the back.

The problem is he'll be 31 next season and I don't think he'll want to be sat behind De Gea and likewise there's no point De Gea staying with the money we'll be giving him (which he is) if he's just going to be sat behind Emi Martinez. I get what you are saying but to me this says a young keeper that can be lightly brought into the fold whilst pushing De Gea for his spot, with a view to taking over in a season or two.

Maybe i'm 100% wrong but I see us signing a fairly young, cheap, but talented GK with the ability to actually play out from the back, we'll send Matej Kovar and Radek Vitek on loan and we'll have somewhat of a 3 horse race to see who can replace De Gea fully, it most likely being the keeper we sign.

Emi Martinez is not a bad shout. Bit of a cnut, but he'd be ours. Prefer Maignan or Diogo Costa though.

Was just having a browse around FBref and didn't realise how well our ex-academy player Milinkovic-Savic was doing in net for Torino.. some very good stats on him. Never seen him play mind but seems a very capable dominant keeper.

When it looked like De Gea was leaving I thought bringing Henderson back seemed like the logical choice as we will have limited funds if we want to by a striker.

Now its almost certain De Gea is signing a new contract, and the fact Henderson seemed to be a disruption and he has made it clear he doesn't trust United to give him a fair chance at the number one spot, I can only see Henderson being shipped out and De Gea being our number 1 next season as we won't have the budget to replace him.

Also with De Gea signing a new contract, there will be no shipping him out, yeah it will be reduced wages but he was the best paid goalkeeper in world football, even if we halved his wages its likley to be more then any other club in the world will pay him, so he will be here for the remainder of that contract.

After seeing Spain yesterday...I can see, why we were using Unai Simon. I would like to see him in United.

People who want Diogo Costa: have you been watching Porto or Portugal lately? Yes, he has huge potential but he still has concentration flaws that I'm not totally convinced they will be fixed.

Maignan is the dream, but he's out of reach due to our limited budget.

Onana price is inflated because of that UCL final performance he's good but he's not a 70M keeper.

Diogo Costa's price dropped because that world cup performance but he's an excellent keeper. It's our chance to take if at a cut price. He's a really modern keeper, would transform our okay out from the back game and ability to hold high pressure instantly.

Seems we want more than juste one GK. More than one is leaving probably then.

So how about that living wall we once played? Francis Uzoho. Remember him? As second/third choice. He was a big fan too. Would've been a cool story at least.

So, if we do sign Onana, which now seems likely, I guess the only concern I can see will be how we perform without him during the African Cup of Nations 13th Jan - 14th Feb 2024 when he'll be away for over a month. I think it'll be at least 4 league games, not sure about cup competitions - any thoughts?

That‘s what second keepers are for.
