A fourth series was commissioned in March 2010. Work began on the scripts in March 2011 and filming began in March 2012. The episodes are expected to air on BBC Two in the autumn. Iannucci has expressed an interest in targeting the coalition government, in particular the role of the Liberal Democrats in the next series. In an interview with The Guardian, he stated his idea was for Peter Mannion to have become a minister "but there will be someone from the other party in the coalition in his office, so a lot of the comedy will come from that tension between duplicated ministers."
In July 2012, Rebecca Front confirmed that she would reprise her role as Nicola Murray MP in the show's fourth series. It was also revealed that the characters will have to deal with a "Leveson-style public enquiry".
