What would the CAF’s reaction be if we had signed Marmoush?

Given that a lot of posters can’t see it with Gyokeres who is having a similar run (1 stand out season and continuing it into the next) in a lesser league (& I know German league is better but look at Kolo Muani at PSG, who also had a great season at Frankfurt before moving on) - What would the reaction be if we had signed Marmoush instead?

Reason I ask is he’s joined a strong side in City to obviously challenge Haaland for the striker role, so they must feel he’s ready. Would it be any different for us?

Wouldn't be overly impressed. Also the wages they're allegedly paying him are ridiculous.

Biggest difference to Gyokeres, who I'm not overly convinced of, is that he's worked and worked well for our coach before

If we were in the financial position of City, I wouldn't mind it. Also if we already had the best striker on the planet, it would probably be worth a punt. If they were signing him to be their starting number 9, maybe I'd justifiably have some concerns.

I think you'd have a mix as usual. Some would be excited and look at all his underlying stats and the rest would be moaning that he's only been good for one season in a weaker league.

The real question is, aside from the Bundesliga Defence League, how many people would rush to watch some youtube clips and declare themselves experts on his game?

The general reaction of United fans would be excitement at buying one of the best up and coming strikers approaching his prime, swiftly followed by calling out INEOS for terrible management and lack of structure at the club after 5 games with no goals and declaring him "the worst signing in United's history".

Context is important. Kagawa didn’t work out and we still won the league. When you have a good team, and your finances are in order, you can make bets in the transfer market. You can buy a promising player, integrate them slowly, give them time to adapt and grow. Even if that player is very young or has had one promising season only, the pressure is not entirely on them to change your fortunes.

We’re in a tough situation that City are not in. We have no money, we need to strengthen in a lot of positions, and the pressure is huge on any transfer to work and work immediately.

In attack specifically, our two most productive players other than Bruno over the past couple of seasons are leaving, and we spent a lot of money on two attackers who are not quite there yet (Hojlund, Zirkzee).

If we sign Marmoush, that realistically would be our only signing this window, considering how things are going. We can take less risks than City, require more immediate reward and can’t wait long term for him to work out. The pressure on him would be huge.

It’s realistic and consistent with where we’re at to have a lot of doubts about any transfers. Every move now feels like we have one shot and we need to get it right.

Reaction would be asking why we'd just spent €75m on a player we could have had for free 18 months earlier, the same as it was for Onana, Hojlund, probably others.

I’d argue City are probably in the same situation as us, they have so many problems to fix.

Frankfurt have a habit of getting the most out of their forward players, selling them for massively inflated fees and then that player going to dog shit as soon as they leave their system.

Financial situation is drastically different. They’ve just spent £140m on three players. We can’t do that.

Marmoush is also coming into an attack that scores goals. Pressure on him is low. They have more defensive issues.

Good post all correct I think

I'd probably be annoyed if we'd sold an Alvarez level player, hamstrung ourselves for months and then had to do this in Jan.

But I'd also be relieved that we had strengthened

City have atleast 5 leading players - Haaland, Foden, Rodri, Bernardo, Dias. We have Bruno, and that's about it. Our situations couldn't be any more different. Not to mention, the gulf in finances.

Funniest part is that if he did it for 3 years in the Bundes he’d cost 100m and then people would be upset at the cost because it’s only the Bundes

He has been described as a striker though? No?
He can lead the line (and did that last season after Kolo Muani was sold and Frankfurt failed to get a replacement), but mostly he is more of a second striker/high scoring playmaker type. This season so far he usually played along Ekitike and I expect him to play together with Haaland in a similar way - the line up today supports this.

So in terms of "what if United had signed him": he would be an alternative to Bruno but could if needed replace Zirkzee/Hojlund. Good for squad depth, but I don't think United currently should spend 75m to challenge Bruno.

This 100%

So who would convince you then?

I have no idea thh. Can't really point at a better option than Gyokeres, just this nagging caution about a strong performer from a smaller league. It worked countless times, but it also failed countless times, and it doesn't feel like we can afford much more failure

If he had a game like yesterday for us, for this price tag, I know he would be crucified by both the Caf and the media

Same for Khusanov

I wouldn't be too excited. Also, we're looking for number 1 option, City already have that covered.
That being said, I don't trust Gyokeres either.

I'd have been happy to have signed an attacking option, but assuming he'd be on the same wage that City have offered him, I'd be horrified. That makes it a no from me.

I think we should be at the stage with any signing, player or staff, being greeted with caution until they prove they are it.

Not as fun as joining in the transfer hype and mythification of new managers but less likely to cause disillusionment.
