Just to remind everyone that we only have 2 reliable-fit CBs.
It is worse at fullback now with Shaw having injuries too.
RW and it’s a toss up between CB and LB. I’d say left back as shaw isn’t good enough and I’m not sure about Williams. Problem is, are there many left backs that are available?

Reading this thread it strikes me how undervalued here the resurgence of Matic has been. If we think he can handle 45+ matches then by all means let’s forget about a DM and bring in a top CB, but I’m not confident he can perform at this level 2x/week. Fred just isn’t a DM. McTominay can do a job there in spot situations but he’s not a DM.

I think LB is slightly "safer" with Williams, Dalot and the other youth waiting to grab any chances they can get.
^ with Fred and Matic would provide the safety cushions for them defensively.
We could also change the whole system to 3 CBs + WB system by maybe putting James on LWB only if we have to.
More than enough time for Shaw to recover back.
This. DM is a must and RW has been a problem for nearly a decade now.
I'd go Sancho and Alaba if I can make just two choices.
Sancho because we can't miss on such talents if available and would elevate our attack to top quality.
Alaba can play CD, LB and CDM from very good level to top level.
If we can squeeze in and get Dayot and Grealish/ Buendia then that will be good quality summer.

True we can change things around, but so we can at central defense with Matic for that role. We still got 5 central defenders so 3 of them should be ready despite injury problems.
I guess bring in quality if we can find it cheap for either position.
I'm in a position I have not been in for a long time. I hold the main players in pretty much every position of our team in my affection. That makes this difficult.
I absolutely support the notion of getting Sancho. Having 4 players I consider truly excellent for those 3 spaces up front, and with the backups too I'd be happy that every part of our attack is sorted.
After that, I don't know. I don't want us to get a CM. I see the arguments about Scott and Fred not being the right player to straight replace Matic. But I still like both of them a lot - and I'm hopeful that we can find a way to play with either of them in the team alongside Pogba and Bruno which will work just as well.
Despite many being unwilling to change their opinion on Shaw at all, I think he's been great for quite some time now, I'm happy with him and Williams at LB. Very happy with AWB at RB, and while backups to him aren't as clear, he seems indestructible, Williams can play there, and Laird is a very exciting prospect.

But I like Maguire a lot, and I can see the argument that he's not the perfect foil. Bailly I worry about his fitness, and about his concentration. No-one else has done anything yet to convince me. So I guess I wouldn't be averse to trying to find a better suited partner to Harry.

Sancho and a CB that is a big upgrade on Lindelof. If the latter is not available in the market then Sancho, a backup AM and a Daniel James type of CB signing to replace Rojo Jones and Smalling.
I see alot of people saying Fred and Mctominay can't replace Matic but they've spent all season playing Matic's position. I also don't see us getting a DM this transfer window at least especially after that Matic's contraxt extension

You are mad if you are thinking to throw Matic on it. I was actually laughed at by my mate Chelsea fans when last time under Jose era I asked him what do you think about Matic being as our temporary centre back. I wasn't really sure but I realised it was a mad idea.
Make him as 5th or 6th is fine but 3rd or even 4th is too stretch out. Ake can cover DM, CB, LB. There was a poster above also mentioned Alaba (probably unrealistic). I think Bailly, Rojo & Jones had their time already. May be Bailly can stay not the other 2 for sure. We still have Williams for FB spot.

We definitely have to get Sancho and a CB. I wouldn't mind someone like Ake is our 3 choice cb. Having someone who is reliable, with a reliable fitness record should be priority.
If Fernandinho can do the role then I think Matic can too. Although might need quality coaching for that for it to work long term.

Agree, but I think Matic got the physicality to do the role. Reads the game well enough too. Could be a bit slow with Maguire as his partner. I think a back 3 might make more sense with him.
Probably with Shaw makes more sense than with Matic if we are talking back 3. I play as holding midfield & CM in my sunday league and I can tell you if there is a position that I can't play is CB & GK. The way how CB defend is different to how holding mid or DM defense. Some DM can do it but not Matic and he also lacks the aggression of normal CB.
Another example of DM Rice, he was terrible the season when he played as CB and he was converted as DM and turns up to be a PL quality player.

It was mainly just as a backup option and not first choice. Shaw in as a central defender would be another option particular if we get a left back. I like Lindelöf and Maguire personally and think they are good enough to take us very far. Slight lack of pace mainly with Maguire is a minor worry. Hope we can learn to cope with that better.

Personally. I prefer Tuanzebe as 4th choice and he needs to fight his spot by at least try to stay away from injury first. And 3rd choice either Lindelof or whoever this new one.

We definitely need better than Lindelof alongside Maguire but there is absolutely no chance we sign Sancho and a top class CB, realistically we will get Sancho, a cheap CB like Rodon & maybe Grealish if Villa get relegated but if they stay up will look elsewhere.

The most critical signing we make this summer is a CB that will play week in week out. I thought Tuanzebe would be the one, but he's so injury prone. He may have missed his chance. Lindelof is not the answer. The question is, do we go for a young up and coming player or an experienced CB. Who is available to buy? Could we use Sanchez in a swap deal for Skriniar + cash? There has to be a young CB out there who fits our needs. Is Rodon good enough, he's being injured a fair bit this season. We can't afford to keep throwing money at the cb's and not getting it right.
As for the 2nd player we have to get Sancho, it will be a drawn-out transfer, but I see us getting him for £70m plus add-ons due to the current crisis.

Centre half is the main priority. We have one reliable number two centre back in Maguire and the rest aren’t fit for purpose.

Definitely more than Grealish; at least if Villa are relegated. Remember when Inter made us try to pay through the fecking nose for Perisic? Conte hates us too, and wouldn't want to give up one of his most important players. They'd charge stupid money and we'd be forced to walk away. Waste of time.
I do think we need more creative depth though. Still feel we should go for VdB, who we know is available at a reasonable price, and Ajax will be desperate for cash.

It's obvious we need more creative/attacking strength. Greenwood and James are versatile squad players and they will get plenty of minutes but we definitely need a new starting player on the right (Sancho). After that we need to bring in someone to compete with Bruno for the attacking midfield spot (Grealish). Currently the drop off in quality if he's out is far too big. Those are the two positions I'd prioritize. If there's any money and time left after that then we should look at a DM and CB. Striker too if Ighalo leaves. Also, we need to get rid of more deadwood like Lingard, Jones, Sanchez, Pereira, etc.
