What is the greatest sporting match of all time?

Personally:

United vs. Bayern '99
Luton vs. Coventry Playoff Final
McGregor vs. Diaz 1 (him vs. Alvarez and Khabib up there too)
World Cup Final 2022
Federer vs. Nadal Wimbledon 2008
Was trying to think of my favourite UFC bout of all time to include, but couldn’t pick one.

There's so many for me but those 3 had great buzz and so many non MMA fans also invested.

The reason I had Diaz over Eddie and Khabib was because that was the one where I was unsure of the result going in. I had a strong feeling McGregor would beat Eddie and would get mauled by Khabib.

But as a purist, one of my favourite fights was Robbie Lawler vs. Rory Macdonald and also Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Conduit.

I wanted to find a Gaethje fight but I think his go down as a series of absolute bangers, rather than legendary.

Masvidal Askren gets my vote

Every Gaethje fight is a classic to be fair. Him vs. Chandler was amazing.

Formula one - 2008 Brazilian GP. The last few laps were like a movie scene.

Has to be Ali-Frazier 3. 15 rounds of pure hell for both fighters that were never the same after the bout. I’ve see every big match in the 70s and 80s including Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and Leonard but the Thrilla in Manilla was the single greatest sporting event I have ever seen.
Edit. I forgot the match ended after fourteen rounds when Frazier couldn’t go on . Ali was ready to throw in the towel but Smokin Joe beat him to it.

Federer vs Nadal 2008 Wimbledon Final

4 hours and 48 minutes of a world number one vs a world number two clashing together producing the most out of the world never seen before quality from start to finish. It’s was jaw dropping.

It’s one of those sporting spectacles that even today, 16 years later, I still can’t believe actually happened in the manor that it did. The rollercoaster that match takes you on was borderline fictional territory.

The documentary on it is a great watch and reflection of that match:

“Strokes of Genius”

We all have our own personal preferences and sporting preferences, for me this sporting match is unrivalled.

Verstappen winning the F1 World Championship
Hearing Toto Wolff bleat "no, no, Mikey, this isn't fair"
In fact any race Hamilton hasn't finished or won is a good race

Maybe not strictly the best games (although they were both great) but for dramatic finishes United's 99 CL final and the Cowboys 2015 NRL Grand Final win must be right up there.

From things I’ve watched:

2022 World Cup final
2015 Super Bowl
2004 Euro final
2021 F1 season finale

Crazy that I watched this live! Amazing match. Appreciate you suggesting the documentary - watched it yesterday and loved it!

You are most welcome, and love that you watched this live, same as myself, I still remember it like yesterday, I still feel hyped about it  and although I don’t like labelling myself in tennis, I am technically a Fed fan, the guy loses, but in the most awesome circumstances in sporting history, possibly not from his point of view but wow what a match.

Glad you found the documentary which is certainly unbelievable

Federer Nadal sticks out to me in the sense that it was obvious during the game itself that this was almost certainly the best tennis match of all time. You knew this was history in the making.

Similar vibes with Bolt in 2008.

Not a match but a race - 4x100m freestyle from 2000 Olympics between Australia and USA and the arrival of Ian Thorpe on they Olympic stage. Grant Hacket (another champion swimmer) once said, Ian Thorpe is what happens when you give somebody with world class talent, the drive of a non-world class athlete.

I think if Thorpe had kept his love of the sport that Phelps would never have beat spitz Record.

And it's not even close.

2011 gaa all Ireland football final.

Emotionally, for me, it was huge. Me, my dad, and my sister went to every Dublin game, we won the Leinster's most years, but never the all Ireland.

Me and Riona had to sit separately from dad, because the only tickets left were that way. When Clucko took the last kick, we RAN up 5 flights of stairs, and he was running down them, we just about made eye contact when we heard the Dublin roar.

It was the last game we ever attended together, he passed away the next May.

It was also a fecking excellent game, and anybody new to GAA I'd recommend watching this
