What is Dan James good at?

Can become a modern Park Ji Song for us. Tbf Park Ji Song was capable on the ball, but that aspect of his game was often sacrificed for a defensive role in the team.

Park was amazing on the ball. Remember him in the Japan/S.Korea World Cup, he carried his whole team.

Every squad needs a squad player like Daniel James. Hard working, positive on and off the pitch, someone to fill the gaps when first team players need rest. Let’s give him a chance to develop and succeed, whatever that means for the club.

Young player from a lower league who put in a a good shift for United early in the season but slowed down. Let's start a thread to bash the shite of him after we have a fun end of the season and make the Champions League.

Awesome stuff.

Crossing the ball at the exact moment the defender is in position to block it, and the ensuing rueful look.

I just hope he doesn't read the Caf. Another whole thread dedicated to bashing him??? Not really necessary. At least let's give him another season. He's still our player, and a new one at that. Isn't a starter either. Bashing is getting a bit overboard for the poor kid.

How many do we need though? Lingard, Periera, Dan James and even past it Mata, are all players who aren't really good enough (Mata is but doesn't have the legs) but have a solid and positive attitude. To ensure we don't have a second string line up full of mediocrity we need to take some tough decisions in this regars.

I'm all for giving youth a chance - when there is genuine potential one believes in. Not our of kindness of heart. To me James look like a player who needs a loan to play every week to improve himself.

Why do we have so many hate on this guy? He wasn't brought to be our regular player, he was brought to give competition for the regular player. He has his own assets that he can offer in the team & has plenty of years to improve, one of the quickest one, high work rate which suits for high press, & being the most fouled in our team. He's currently on low confidence which affects his performance.

If you hate the guy playing in our XI, let me tell you something. When Sancho comes in, James will become less regular so stop hating on him and let him provide good competition for our wide players.

I dont understand redcafe.net obsession with scapegoating.

So lingard has scored a couple of goals? Let's move on to dan james and create a couple of threads to make sure people don't mistake him with a decent football player

Agreed. He needs playing time and lots of it, and it's difficult to see how he gets a lot of it next season. He'll get minutes, but he needs to be starting every week at his age.

Can't believe the abuse this kid have gotten here and in Twitter.

That must be really hard to take as a player, waking up and seeing your own fans slating. I feel for James, hope he will never stop trying.

kid has potential to be a useful squad player for us but just as i feared he probably played a lot more than we should have with our injury crisis early on in the season when we depended on him quite heavily just to score a goal. He has looked burnt out and lacking in confidence since. It may not be the worst idea to loan him out to a premier league club fighting for survival or even a championship club, i thought his decision making was wanting even when he was supposedly playing well. Contrary to what people think it's not such a bad thing to have an option that gives us a lot of work rate and speed especially late on in a game.

At James's age, Park was in the K-league
Physical attributes can absolutely help you in reaching a good level as an footballer. James's pace is borderline unrivaled, making it as useful a weapon when utilized correctly as something like a very tall target man ( a la Fellaini ).very useful squad player
We don’t have any tall strikers though. I’d also argue while he’s quick in terms of pace his football brain lags behind.

We’ve seen this before in far better players such as Ousmane Dembele. I get why United would want him but he’s blatantly not the level we need as a squad option. We need players who are comfortable on the ball.

Whenever he gets the ball I always think he will lose it and he invariably does. I wouldn’t write him off just yet but he needs to start doing even the most basic remit of a winger - beat a man and miss the first man with the cross.

He lost all the confidence he had earlier and for a young footballer it’s massive. I’m not sure, however, he can regain that confidence here given the lack of game time.

I think hes overwhelmed here at times. What I mean is he does the wrong things at the wrong times. The game when he shot from an acute angle when Bruno was in the box and a simple pass was all that was needed, seems to have taken his toll on him. Now it seems like everything he does is bereft of confidence. I would send him to Leeds or somewhere like that next season and see if he can get his confidence back. If he does, great, we may have a solid backup. If not, well he will be 23 next summer and we probaly get half our money back selling him at least.

He has been very bad in the last few outings, he is better than that and we've seen in earlier in the season.

If only he learns how to cut inside like Robben. He could devastate defences.

He started the season well and has been good against high lines. Poor form since Greenwood took his place but I still think he has a use going forward. We'll likely sell him at a profit too.

He had a purple patch of goals and his running allowed him to create a few assists. One particularly good one against City I think it was with a great cross. Overall he's an average player though

He used his pace efficiently when he first joined. He would track back and press at full speed and the crowd would gasp, but now he does nothing right.

I'm fearing he's feeling like he's made it and is content with being 2nd or 3rd choice, I've seen absolutely no improvement from him from almost a year now.

I like James. He can be a great squad player for us. Just needs a little boost to his confidence

Agree. He was completely overplayed on the wrong side too. He is a work in progress with elements like his final ball/decision making that need time to get right. Nothing more than you'd expect from a young player learning his way.

He seems a likeable character and I would like him to succeed but he just seems crippled with a lack of confidence at the moment. The first half of the season, even after the goals dried up, he was creating goals and was devastating on the counter.

I think he maybe needs a loan if he doesn’t turn it around early next season. Get him regular playing time and get his confidence back.

But it does seem worrying, because at the minute, he doesn’t look like he’s anywhere near good enough

Seriously watch back the games in the first half of this season.

Basically for a squad player
  • good in cutting in dangerously when he's playing LW.
  • goals, his shooting is quite good.
  • creating chances (he's our best chances creator before Bruno when Pogba is injured).
  • assists and crosses (remember the "passes to Rashford"? still inconsistent).
  • high acceleration to exploit spaces.
  • running on the ball at top speed.
  • running into the boxes and get pulled down (won us penalties but eventually he got the 'diver' label).
  • defensive workrate (not really good at defending)
  • off the ball movements especially when there are spaces beyond to run into.
  • team support in receiving passes.
  • counter-attack with speed, his runnings gave us options.
  • attacking-minded.
  • very direct.
  • great fitness.
Those are what he can bring to the team when he's in good form. When he's off form, he can still provide the work-rate, speed and threats to exploit spaces but generally useless since majority of our games are against low blocks and when we're up against high blocks, he's up against far better players to stop him.

There are a lot of limitations in his abilities. Too many and too obvious to be seen, no need to describe it but mostly his on-the-ball abilities lacking good skills/techniques <-- it's too basic and stiffy, plus his decision makings are often questionable but definitely not worse.

At best I'm confident he can only be a very good squad player for us. I think the only one thing he can improve on is just consistency. He is still too inconsistent but that's normal. Once he is consistent, he'll be that very good squad player.

Stopped reading at goals. He has as many as a completely out of form Lingard, despite playing more games.

I don’t want to write him off, the blame should be with the scouts/coaches for needing him to play so much this season. I don’t see it with his technique or decision making though, Chong seems like he could be more effective if given more regular game time.

When we signed him, a lot of people said it’s worth a punt. A punt meaning there’s enough question marks there, so I don’t understand the hate.

He looks devoid of confidence. The incident yesterday when he pointed for the pass but then didn’t run in that space just showed me that he’s afraid to mess up.

I hope he discovers form

He's like one of those younger, more feminine guys in prison. The alphas like to keep them around, as they can always find a use for them or jobs for them to perform.

I suspect James plays a similar role within the United dressing room.

I think it's partially a confidence thing. James started well in his first 3 or 4 games and then fizzled out because he clearly wasn't ready to be playing at this level as regularly as he was.

He looks ineffective now but I still wouldn't give up on him just yet, with the right coaching he can still be a useful squad player. That kind of speed is still an asset, if he focuses on getting his decision making and final ball right he'd be a great option to have off the bench.

Our fans are the absolute worst sometimes, he's a young lad in his first season in the top flight, leave the kid alone.

Pace is his thing. I remember city couldn't handle it when they played Swansea. Teams in the early season couldn't handle it and would just foul him constantly.

But he isn't using it any more.

If you have it, use it.

Long term squad player, homegrown, young enough to improve, has tremendous pace coupled with a hard working attitude, on cheap wages, small transfer fee, can play a reserved role when needed and to give players a rest.
Also been played out of position for the whole season.
Personally think he s a tremendous find by the club. Not to forget Leeds, under Bielsa, wanted to sign him which speaks more than most might think.
We need to ease up on the kid. Can become a modern Park Ji Song for us. Tbf Park Ji Song was capable on the ball, but that aspect of his game was often sacrificed for a defensive role in the team, which is what I think James is capable of. 22 years old making a jump from the championship to the premier league ( Never mind Man United) will always take time to adapt.
Just look at Zaha
Park had almost led PSV to a CL final as their star attacker, Milan only got through because of the away goal. They are incomparable in terms of their football abilities.
