What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

I'm so glad you lot are finally asking for a top attacking left back.

Hopefully the message reaches Woodward.

Sancho
Upamenco
Grealish
VDB or Thiago

Now is the time to be true to his word when he said “Clubs can only dream of what Man United are capable of doing” Something along those lines..

Then next year go all out for Rice and a top striker.

Sancho
LB
CB
CM
cover for Bruno. Woodward on your bike, now!!!!

Definitely, order is spot on too. I like McTominay and Matic can do a job too, would be a plus if its an attacking fullback that could cover either side but shouldn't get greedy

I'm argue though that if we could get one sign (Sancho) vs a few with the Sancho money spread out depending on if we've identified decent targets for each positions we should go for the latter, no point in getting Sancho if we're not solid/stable at the back or getting any support either side of the flank on the overlap.

We'll sign none of them.

I also expect more outgoings than incomings too.

4 signings - RW, CB, LB, creative midfielder.

Then a major cull.

Min 3 signing
Rw, St, lb
Need a first choice cb but don't expect so many incomings this summer.

It's shocking how bad both Manchester clubs are when scouting defenders, 500-600m spent between them and maybe 1-2 have looked decent/good.

Hard to argue with people who say we need a clinical no 9 but expect priorities this summer to be

RW
CB
AM

Then maybe next summer we target

ST
DM
LB

Yes I appreciate we need some of those this summer too but can only see us signing a max of three.

I don't think we'll win the league next season but will likely finish in the top 4. It'll be between us and Chelsea for 3rd and 4th.

So with that and covid in mind. If we can sign Sancho and add maybe a midfielder then I feel we'll be on the right track. I also believe we will see two players from the youth team come into the first team picture too.

agree with your pragmatism.

Which youth players do you think will break through?

  • The fullbacks need revamping. Drastically. Wan Bissaka will be starter for next season but I'm less and less convinced he's any sort of long term option unfortunately. Not really many standout options though (already missed out on Hakimi). Shaw is decent all round but we need more than what he is to be a starter. Williams is young and decent, but should be seen as like the 4th full back of the group (backup fullback who can play on either side). Reguillon,
  • Upamecano to partner Maguire. Centerback who is comfortable on the ball, dominant physically/fast and just a top prospect
  • Proper holding mid. We're constantly changing around that base midfielder because none of them are really suited to it or good enough. Partey?
  • Sancho to start on the right. Greenwood should be the 1st attacker off the bench or someone who rotates with any of the starting 3. Shouldn't be starting every game, he's only 18, he'll have enough games and he'll force his way in. Don't gift it because there is no competition. Would sort out the starting 11 and depth in the attack IMO.
  • Attacking midfield depth (nobody past Bruno and Pogba in our squad) (Van de beek/Grealish)
That way we can have 2 XI's like:

Rashford Martial Sancho
Pogba Bruno
Partey
Reguillon Upamecano Maguire AWB
DDG

James Ighalo Greenwood
VDB/Grealish Fred McTominay
Shaw Lindelof Bailly Williams
Henderson

I like how you just chuck a sneaky £70 mill Grealish in your back up team.

Good suggestions which make a lot of sense. But over how many future transfer windows?
Because there is no way we can finance all of that before October.

An example of attacking midfield depth. I actually don't really want Grealish (especially because of price, £40m at most). Its just the example of depth we need. Replace him with Van De Beek if you want.

Permitting injuries I hope Laird and Mengi are both given squad roles. And I believe the 'Tunisian tornado' Hannibal Mejbri will at some point in the season come into the reckoning.

So it's important we be patient because we seem to be on the right track.

Sign 3 players on permanent transfers. Get 2 on loan.

We should start using the loan market. Get players that other big clubs don’t want on loan with option to buy.

Sancho - 110
Partey - 50
Reguillion - 30
Upamecano - 50
Grelish - 60

300 million

You must understand maybe 150 absolutely max is being spent....

Only saw him on his recent cameo debut. What type of CB is he? Does he have a grown up equivalent he can aspire to become?

Its what we need to bring us up a level, and even then we won't have the squad depth that the likes of Bayern/City have. Would give us a starting 11 competitive with anyone though, a high level rotation player in every group (Greenwood, VDB/Grealish, Lindelof, Shaw) who will fight for a starting spot and open up versatility.

Definitely unrealistic right now, more over this summer and next summer, but really how much is it though? Gotta force the deadwood out and be aggressive with the turnover right now.
Outgoing:
  • Smalling - £20m
  • Jones - £5m
  • Pereira - £15m
  • Lingard - £10m
  • Rojo - £5m
  • Mata - free
  • Matic - free
  • Romero - free
  • Dalot - £15m
Total - 70m, loads in wages
Incoming:
  • Upamecano - £40m
  • Reguillon - £30m
  • Partey - £45m
  • Van de Beek - £35m
  • Sancho - £108m
Total - £258m

It's 5 players, but the first 4 are definitely possible in this window and then we can bring in Dembele on loan for the season if we can't get Sancho this summer. The sales are also probably tough (and Matic fine to stay for now anyway), but still. Its a time where we need to be aggressive, and I don't see us doing shit.

Over 2 summers meant, with all the incomings and outgoings, we just need to be more aggressive. I get the sense of sitting back from our board since we got 3rd and have a young team... if we don't push on like we need to, we'll be at risk of wasting whats actually a very promising group.

He's a very aggressive CB that is lightening quick. Physically very powerful for his age and had a superb season in the u23s. I hope he grows a couple of inches because I feel it'll really help him become a more imposing/commanding CB than he is currently.

Stylistically he reminds me of Jaap Stam but Mengi is still 18 whilst Stam was 26 when we signed him. Mengi has the potential to develop into a very good player in a high pressing team and it's easy to see why Ole has him in and around the squad because he also favours the high-press.

So for me Sancho and a midfielder would represent a fantastic window and if we can supplement the squad further with a few additions from the youth team, then I believe things will look very good in 12 months time.

In addition to Sancho and a midfielder, I think we need another striker other than Martial for days like today who could put away those chances we created. What do you think of Raul Jiminez?

To become a title challenger next season:

Raul Hernandez or Moussa Dembélé
Sancho
VdB or Grealish
Ndidi
Pau Torres or Upamecano
Alex Telles

But since we usually sign only 3 players max in a window...
So I'd go for
Sancho
VdB
Torres

Jimenez would be a great addition but it comes down to cost and in the covid market it doesn't look like a deal that makes much sense financially if we're to sign a top quality RWF.

Personally I'm hoping Mason is given a run as the #9. I think if those chances that fell to Martial had fallen to Mason against Sevilla, I think we'd be in the final.

The backbone of this team needs to be sorted out, start from the back and work our way to the front.

Upamecano (cb) and Zakaria (cdm) would be a great start.
Its either now or never for Sancho to join us, If he doesn't make a move with us in this transfer window, I'd look to swap Pogba for Odegaard from Real Madrid. Give Odegaard the RW free roam role, sort of like how Mata is played.
I'd also look to bring in Tonali from relegated Brescia FC on the cheap.
Sort the left Back position out. Estupinan (from Watford) or Reguilon (from Sevilla) would great additions to this current team.

If we don't get a wide player, two cms, another cb and maybe another fb, next season isn't going to be pretty.

Hate to break it to you but we aren't going to sign 5 players in this window. The best we can hope for is 3 and yes I know that's not enough.

I’m guessing that Davies, Mengi, upamecamo and laird would be a totally fearsome and bad ass back 4 when they are all aged 24+!

Yep, we will spend another two weeks trying for Sancho before briefing that the deal couldn’t be done because Dortmund were unrealistic with the valuation.

We will then panic buy Grealish for £70m and Torres followed by a last day of the transfer window bidding on every winger out there (like we did for Ighalo in Jan) before signing Dembele on loan.

Davies and Upamecano are established first team players. Mengi and Laird we hope can make the step up and for us to have the patience with them. That's how squads are built. The much lauded Ralf Rangnick has adopted the same philosophy at RBL.

I totally agree with everyone who says we need an attacking LB,however got a horrible feeling Ole will pass on it because thinks Shaw will solve the issue when he is fit again.

So that is why I am pretty confident this window we only get

RW
CB
AM

Yes I wish we could get more than that but then sadly you remember who our board is

We need a good LB, the fact we've missed Shaw so much, just goes to show how bad the options are in that department.
