What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

100% this.

However I think Darmian needs to be put out his misery, so i’d Imagine we need LB cover too.

I wouldn't sign a LB till Jan tbh - we need the summer to fix our starting 11 then we can worry about squad signings.

Yeah that will be the case going off Young’s new deal. He’ll be the FB cover for both right and left next year. Great.

No ifs or buts we need:

CB x2
RB
DM
CM
RW
ST

I’d swap, one CB for a LW. So basically a whole new, front 3.

But I think, 4 is realistic, coupled with what OGS has said recently. So for me:

CB has to be a leader.
RB has to be able to run all day.
CM needs to be creative and add goals.
RW has to be a potential match winner/game changer.

It’s a 3-4 year build, but needs to be done in 2, before we’re left further behind. Im not sure, we’ll get/spend what’s required and we’ll be saying the same things, next summer.

I don't think we can let Pogba go this summer, not with all of the other stuff we need to do, so I'd try and make the below happen, if we can't get Eriksen and Dybala then I'd take a risk on Jovic for the Striker and Fekir for the #10 role.

Do you prefer a diamond formation instead of a 433?

Get rid of Woodward and the Glazers then sell De Gea, Pogba, Lukaku and Sanchez and with the money start building a new team.

After all they all have their mind set somewhere else.

Do you prefer a diamond formation instead of a 433?

Yes, because I don't think the RW options out there are finished articles and I don't care for Rashford as a wide forward, I prefer him as split striker, and since one of our current front 3 at least will be still starting, I think he's the most likely.

Two full backs one on either side, Shaw's good but if he's out we've got nothing to fall back on. A world class centre half. That is more important than anything else. If we keep relying on Jones and Smalling, well...we know where that leads.

We need a mobile defensive midfielder, Matic doesn't have the legs anymore. We need a box to box midfielder, especially since we've decided to tell Herrera to do one. We also need a right winger. Doesn't need to be Ronaldo but has to have a) pace and b) crossing ability.

Its a massive summer we're looking at...

...again.

Get rid of

Mata
Sanchez
Lukaku
Rojo
Jones
Darmian
Valencia
Matic

How much money and wages is freed up right there?

I keep seeing people suggesting we sell Sanchez for lots of money or even small fee. Pray tell me who would be stupid enough to take over his contract, let alone getting a transfer fee. Can see us massively subsidising any deal to get rid of him.

Fred is more comfortable on the left while Alderweireld is more comfortable on the right side of the defence.

And I don't think Rashford deserves a chance with the lot of shite he's offered lately.

Agreed, but we need to do it regardless, take the hit and move on.

Fred and Alderweireld can play either side, and in the case of Alderweireld I'm only selecting him as he's cheap and if we invest in attack as we need to we'll have to pay less somewhere else.

As for Rashford, I don't disagree but one of our current attack will remain a starter IMO and Rashford is the most likely.

No, this isn't a joke...

We need sooooo much.

I think that the goal should to rebuild the squad in next 3 years and no one from this squad should stay in the club trough that period, except Rashford, Lindeloff, Mctominay, Shaw and Dalot.

First we need to get rid of the deadwood (we all know who they are) and sell the most valuable players on the market.

De Gea - sell him and find the replacement, otherwise we will lose him for free.

Pogba - he will never become a world class player for United. He doesn't even want to be here. It would be ideal to sell him and invest that money in Eriksen or Bruno Fernandes and Ndidi.

Martial - he is past the point where we can call him a talent. He should already be a formed player. His workrate and attitude are bad, I can't see him making a progress. I believe that in this market his value would be at least 50 mil. Invest that money in Leon Bailey and Lozano.

Lukaku - sell him to Serie A and replace him with Luka Jovic from Frankfurt, he surely can't do much worse than Lukaku.

Sanchez - sell him to anyone who is willing to pay his weekly wage.

With that said, 2 CBs, RB, CM and RW should be a priority (Rabiot, Toby, Meunier, Koulibaly are somehow realistic options, Sancho and Saul would be a welcome additions).

--------------New GK

Meunier - Koulibaly - Toby - Shaw

---------------Ndidi
----Eriksen ---------- Saul/Rabiot

-----Sancho ----------- Rashford
-----------------Jovic

Romero, Dalot, Lindeloff, Mctominay, Lingard, Lozano/Bailey as subs.

I know that it is unrealistic to expect so many new players but there is really no other way to rebuild this squad. God knows that right now there is much quantity and not so much quality.

Of course, getting a DoF is a must.

Anyhow, I think that there is a long and turbulent period in front of us.

Loads will go out for sure...as many as 8 or 9

We will bring 3 or 4 in max.

Then promote 4 of the younger lads. We have Axel to come back and dean henderson who has been awesome at sheff utd.

The point is not the base of the team . Most of the players in that team are unproven . We are not an Everton or a West ham United who can try experiments on such a massive level . We need quality players and not unproven players who are already hit and miss at their own mid table clubs . I would rather give the academy players a chance instead of this . The team which was posted would have a trying time making it to top 6 forget a title challenge or top 4 fight .

The aim of the game is not a top 4 fight, it's to win the league. Starting by creating the base of a team that has fight and work ethic is an essential part of acheiving that and, the hardest thing to buy in.

Long term transfer targets are needed, players that the club have scouted and assessed to be fit for the club.

Changing the manager and panic buying expensive players every summer has got the club into this mess.

Ole needs to identify what senior players he wants to keep and what young/academy players he wants to promote.

Then the reality of losing 1-3 of the players he wants to keep needs to be addressed.

Look for players in their final year of contract, so the transfer fees can be controlled, but still raise the overall quality of the team.

Not every transfer will give you 10 years service and Ole has enough young talent to nurture without worrying about adding more kids to the mix.

Just some of my thoughts...bottom line is, it’s a MASSIVE task ahead.

DDG
Wan Bissaka - De Ligt - Lindelöf - Shaw
Bruno - Neves - Pogba
Sancho - Griezmann - Rashford

If not De Ligt wants to join then get Koulibaly.

There has never been a player I wanted more badly to sign for United than De Ligt, the guy has fearlessness of Vidic and positioning and ball playing skills of Rio. And he is only 19. But sadly with the state of affairs at united it is only a dream... I would settle for Monolas or even a young defender like Ake. But we badly need reinforcements in defence.

We definitely need a right back, at least 2 midfielders, ideally Bruno, Neves or Rodri.

A right winger, ideally Sancho, otherwise Pepe. And a striker.

Well as Ole as said we are not signing six players

Clear out the contract rebels, under performing stars and the fringe players. Sign young hungry players that want to and can become stars.
Personally, especially without a top 4 finish, which is likely, the likes of De Ligt, Kouilibaily & Felix I dont see us enticing....and we want players that want to play for us too anyway. I also think three of those signings though young, have leadership potential.

One season for certain players to prove themselves worthy of staying such as Jones, Fred, Perreira, Martial whilst giving plenty of opportunities to break through for the likes of Tuanzabe, Laird, Dalot, Garner, Gomes, Chong and Greenwood.

Young and inexperienced but this also allows them to be moulded into United players.

Personally I would sell Martial too, but only signing five players it was 2 of3 out with Lukaku and Pogba. WOuld also like 2 x cb signings but again 5 signings and Jones having a new contract I cant see him moving either. Main aim this summer now is to majorly clear out so that by the next window can be looking at 4/5 out and same in and with a negative spend this summer, money would be no object

I’m sorry but selling Lukaku and effectively replacing him with Sancho is not going to solve our problems. Who is going to score our goals? Rashford couldn’t finish his dinner and Martial wants the ball to his feet as he’s too lazy.

We need a goal scorer too. Greenwood isn’t the solution either. I’d say signing a world class striker and binning any of the front three is a priority.

One thing is for sure now and that is we are more likely to see 2 or 3 signings than 4 or 5 in the summer. Solskjaer's "step by step" qoutes have pretty much said as much.

Yep, And that's a very scary thing. Basically says we are to have no expectations next season.

Seeing so many starting line ups for next season include McTominay is scary. He has done well the past few months but he isn't a starter on a top team.

If we can have 2 proper midfielders next season, having McT for a support role in lines up isn’t bad thing.

That front 3 looks so unconvincing. At least one of Rash or Martial in the main lines up not both. We need 2 top attackers.

We’re going nowhere fast relying on Martial, blokes got no hunger or desire. Talent means very little when you can’t or don’t know how to use it. He’s just Nani all over again with much less of an upside.

Maybe if the rest of the team were at it he wouldn’t be so bad, but he can’t conjure up anything by himself.

I think it depends on what formation or system are we playing. The lacks of available quality wingers nowadays makes me think that we should go with diamond, this allows us to keep Lukaku in the team as a backup.

GK: Keep DDG or get Oblak if we can’t keep him.

Defense: this needs a massive haul. Need a decent right back & 2 centre backs who can pass the ball. Maguire & Umtiti, don’t know who’s the right back is. I like the Ajax’s young right back but he just signed a new contract.

Midfield: Assume if we keep Pogba, i’ll go with good deep playmaker & Eriksen.

Striker: Jovic. Only watched him once but he looks like an all round striker, and his stats this season has been great. A bit risky since he’s still 21 and only proven for this season but who else do we have.

I do pretty much agree. The thing is if Ole says we arent signing 6 players.....just try and put five new signings in, whilst still getting rid of the majority of players that attitude/contract/performance shouldnt be here.....it is very difficult. If we are doing 5 signings, we pretty much need to clear out and quality wise actually move backwards to move forwards with the attitude and long term plan.

All it leads me to think is extremely negative tbh. This summer, no top four, no top target dream signings, 4/5 good ones (prob 1/2of those dissapointing) and still 6+ players starting another season really shouldnt be here like Martial, Matic, Jones, Young and even Lukaku, Sanchez and Pogba likely.

We have been doing 3-5 signings and similar out every summer and thats part of the problem, doing things in stages. A lot of wrong signings, not enough signings meaning the likes of Fellaini, Mata, Young are staying far longer than they should be in my opinion.

Look at what Guardiola did at CIty in his first two seasons, loads of players in and out to get the team he wanted, and lets not forget that was a team already winning titles and challenging in Europe. I am not actually a fan of Guardiola, but one thing for sure, if he was the manager, loads of these players would be straight out the door and replaced

The club is and has been languishing in premier league, occupying an average position of between 4th and 7th since 2013. Good young players, some with questionable temperaments like Januaji, Zaha, Nick Powell, Memphis Depay have been sold or released for little or no money. Other solid pros who understood the club like Michael Keane, Rafael, Johnny Evans have all been sold or released for peanuts when even now, those young men would walk into our squad. The owners and board are clearly the problem, no long term planing, constant change of Managers who simply don't fancy players they inherit, instead wasting money for more more flavour of the month foreign imports who more often than not turn out to be football mercenaries dragging the club down to depths we have never experienced!
So, what I would like to see for the start of next season are the following;
  • The Glaziers sell the club on the 15th May, preferably to a multi pound billionaire that actually supports and understands the history of the club
  • Ed Woodward and most of his croonies sacked one week later!
  • Sir Alex, Sir Bobby and other United Men from the modern era like Gary Neville, Eric Cantona and Patrice Evra appointed to the board in some capacity that liase closely with a new Director of Football.
  • Appoint Edwin Van De Sar as Director of Football the same day the Glaziers leave, giving him the power, management team and structure underneath to completely overhaul the playing squad which would take 4 transfer windows, 2 in the Summer and 2 in the Winter.

Radically changing the playing squad is simply an impossible task to solve in one window, United can not remove half of their playing squad over one window and bring in 9 or 10 players, ask the Fulham board how that turned out!

No
, we need to try and understand how this same squad came 2nd last year with 81 points and won 10 out of Ole's first 11 games in charge, how the same players were able to boss Arsenal and Chelsea in the Fa Cup, win 3-1 at PSG and then wilt in the last 8 games where in all honesty we should also have lost to Watford and West Ham as well. I have a theory that when we devised our players contracts early in the naughties, no one ever thought United would be playing Europa League Football, so the 25% reduction was simply brushed aside, now the reality has set in that football never stands still and constantly moves on so we must allow our new Director of Football to renegotiate contracts with the players we want to keep firstly, working closely with Ole who will know whether they possess the character, mentality, energy, legs, Football skill required to play for this great club. I have listed who I would sign on these new contracts that should be somewhere in between the 75% Europa League and 100% CL contact, so Rashford wants a new 5 year contract, his deal would have been £200K per week basic plus bonuses goals, winners incentives taking him up to £250K per week, dropping to £150K per week if the club failed to qualify for CL. His revised deal would be £170k per week and £30K per week bonus for CL qualification plus goal and winners incentives. This is much more in line withhow all of the top 6 six operate within the premier league.

New Contract Agreements; (14)
Pogba, De Gea, Rashford, J Lingard, S McTominay, V Linderlof, Dalot, S Romero, D Henderson, A Pereirra, with L Shaw, C Smalling, P Jones and A Martial all recently signing new contracts so minor ammendments being made to benefit the club and the players.

Young and Upcomming players same type of contracts with obvious lower basics; (12)
Eithan Laird, Taith Chong, Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood, Nishan Burkart, Azel Tuanzebe, Tim Fosu- Mensah, James Garner, Aliou Traoure, Aiden Barlow, Millen Baars, Charlie McCann
These young kids all have outstanding ability and promise and I fully expect at least half of them to be promoted to the senior squad this summer and the other half within the next 3 years. Both 22 year olds, Axel and Timothy Fosu should be given at least a chance to impress in the pre season tour joined by Angel, Mason, Taith and James Garner. I rate Timothy Very highly but he's no centre back or right back but would be a great destroyer with his speed and energy to play as a CDM.

Sold - (Forced out by being left on old contracts) (5)
R LUKAKU - 75M/250k, E BAILEY 35M/100K, M ROJO 15M/120k, M DARMIAN 7M/80k, M FEILLANI 13M/ 160K L Grant 1M/20k
Released - (Contracts Run Down) (3)
JUAN MATA - 170K, A HERRERA -140K, A VALENCIA - 120K
Limbo - (1 year or impossible to move)
A Sanchez - 400k per week (25% EL clause will kick in), A Young - 90k (25% EL will kick in)
N Matic -160k per week (25% EL clause will kick in 1 year ) Fred - 140k (25% EL will kick in)
Transfer Sales should account for £145M which added to our normal £150M would mean £280-300M spend but wage bill would still be relatively high after negotiatting De Gea, Pogba and Rashfords new contacts.

Conclusion -
A New DOF is our most important signing in living history, we will only buy 5 players this summer with the current regime probably still in charge. Young men who are leaders will be looked at and if Van De Sar or Paul Mitchell are installed as our new DOF, things will improve but not overnight.
I'm hoping that Edwin is our New DOF and we recruite the following 5 players from either of the two options below ;
RB - A Wan Bissaka or T Meunier - 40M or 25M
CB - M De Ligt or T Auderweireld - 70M or 25M
CAM - C Erikssen or Felix - 80M or 100M
RW - J Sancho or N Pepe - 80M or 65M
CFW - L Jovic or M Iccardi - 40M or 65M

My guess is that come the start of the season we may have 2 of these players from either list and 2 other obscure choices meaning the club will be fighting Leicester, Everton, Wolves and Watford for 7th place with Woodward continuing to fail the club, should the unthinkable happen and we are bought by a rich billionaire that only wants to win, we may buy 5 from the list plus 2 other genuine superstars within the game and maybe then all bets are off.
