What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

I’d like to see us go for a young player too like Marcos Leonardo or Gift Orban. Both look like going elsewhere for quite modest fees though. Seems almost inevitable that Greenwood will be back so I can’t see us bringing any other strikers in.

Yes reading o Orban and his golas record, he looks an interesting talent and very cheap too, that is the kind of gamble I liek the sound of....thoughwonder if he may be a hype train. Saw Spurs linked recently

Yeah Spurs seem more interested

We could continue to strengthen the team forever but everything else equal what we really need right now is a central midfield that can both play instead of Casemiro and play together with Casemiro. This player is ideally taking the squad spot from Fred which is rumoured away.

In addition, we definitely need a 3rd goal keeper unless we keep Henderson or keep Vitek / Kovar in the team as 2nd or 3rd goal keeper options.

Everything else beyond the above 2 transfers would and should depend on whether we sell players like Maguire, McTominay, VdB, Martial etc.

After Hojlund seems injury prone another striker would not be bad. Ten Hag wanted to buy Brobbey from Ajax. Good would also be Iheanacho (1 year left on his contract, PL experience, cheap). So someone should still come.

And in the central defense there are only rumors about Todibo or someone else?

He's been injured once in his career during a season, missing 2 games. Get a grip.

Of course not.

Greenwood if he returns will need 6 months at least before he makes a United squad, I genuinely think ETH philosophy is to have 2 international players for every position plus 1 encase of injury or ban.

That would mean we need 3 GK’s,
9 Defenders, 7 midfielders and 7 attackers or a squad of 26. Five subs can be used in PL games and more in CL games.
We have 2 GK, so need one unless we use M Kovar as 2nd/3rd option. Assuming H Maguire goes we need a young CB as 3 of our 4 other CBs are 30 or over.

We are short of an elite attacking right back but that can wait til January. In Midfield we will have hopefully Casemeiro, S Amrabat, K Mainoo, Bruno, Mount, Ericsen and either S Mctominay or A.N.Other. In Attack we will have Antony,
J Sancho, R Hojlund, M Rashford, Martial, Garnaucho and 1 more plus Amad Recovering from injury. We really are 3 top/Elite players from Challenging for the Title.

Let Johny Evans work with U23’s, send Amad on PL loan when fit and sell Scott for £45m then finally go and replace them with D Alaba/B Pavard, Leon Goretzka/Caciedo and Harry Kane

But there‘s no money to add all these players. I can only see us bringing in a cheap, a CB and Amrabat and that’s dependent on Henderson, Maguire, DVB and Fred all going.

Maybe if Mctominay goes, which is looking less likely, we’ll sign someone else but I can’t see any more attackers coming in.

It's cost a lot more than I thought but if we sign Todibo and Amrabat, I think we're finally at a place where we have a great platform to begin competing. For years we've had multiple actively bad players in the team and now I would say that's not really the case and any big leaps will involve upgrades to already decent players.

Long term, I think our attack is going to have to contribute more to goals and assists. Rashford provides goals but all our creativity has been coming from midfield. Really wish we hadn't spent such a big fee on Antony as I think it will be tricky for EtH to make the inevitable decision that he's not likely ever going to be an elite attacker. Olise is there begging to be bought and I do think he would be a great fit for that role on the right. He's also very good out of possession which is the biggest thing you would lose in Antony's absence.

How would you feel if it was Pavard & Amrabat NOW, however we are still looking to bring in Todibo or someone of that mould to replace Varane next summer. I know for some on the CAF that won't be considered acceptable at all

Pavard and Amrabat signed plus Greenwood back in the squad.
And...
Wishful thinking: Kane signed for £80m + Martial as a last minute 'Brucy bonus' after he turns down Bayern Munich, just to upset Levy.

Hypothetically Sign B Pavard £30m and S Amrabat £24m add to £47m Onana, £55m Mount and £64m R Hojlund = £220m Sales

Sold - Z IQbal, T Chong Sell on, C Savage, N Bishop, A Teles, E Laird = £10m plus A Elanga £15m plus H Maguire £30m Plus Fred £15m £70m

Net Spend £150m

If we sold S Mctominay £40m, M Jurado and E Bailey - £5m = £45m more
Scott transfer is net profit like Elanga and other youth players means that those two transfers alone when amortised could increase our FFP/FSP rumoured budget from £150/170m to £300/320m

In other words we would be able to afford a surprise marquee signing not even discussed yet in the media, assuming SJ and 92 Foundation are actually much further down the line than most fans think.

Personally don’t think we’ll sell Scott but I can see us signing another young striker like Marcos Leonardo for £15m

I'm maybe wrong but have we a single fit striker for the start of the season?

What about a DM that is not Amrabat. I would prefer Onana from Everton. But probably he is much more expensive and only possible if Donny and Fred are leaving.

It's really, reeeeally weird not to have a long-running transfer saga that our whole window depeneds on, this year.

We seem...organised. I'm scared.

Ralf rangnick said we need 10 new players a year ago. 3rd transfer window in and Erik has signed 7 players with 2 more possibilities in Amrabat and Todibo/Pavard.

I think post this window we have a good group of players and only need 1 big striker signing to put us into the title race and probably win it too. Kane next transfer window will put us up there and I hope he stays around at Spurs and moves on a free

Sorry when you said next window for Kane I thought you were talking about January

I think Pavard turned us down before because he didn't want to play RB anymore so think that approach would be problematic down the line. He's not meant to be a very good RCB in a back four according to my reading so not sure I like that scenario tbh.

Does anybody else feel we’re still thin in the midfield?

Every flipping match I sense a lack of a ball carrying virtuoso. Mount plays high, Bruno roams all over place, Eriksen is just ‘there’, yet hardly (meanwhile the defensive duties will fall on Casemiro and then probably McTominay). So, can we go into the season without a true box to box FDJ type?

The way the two-deep stands:

Mount-Casemiro-Bruno, then Eriksen-McTominay-Mainoo

Is this enough?

Enter..Amrabat

Yeah, its why the the Mainoo injury was such a hammer blow as buildup looked much better with him in the side. Obviously, you can't rely on a 17/18 year old to be consistent across a season in a high level league but it was a breath of fresh air seeing someone like that back in the midfield.

Nope here’s why?
1. You Start 3 in every Game
2. You want 2 on the bench, one more defensive and one more attacking to give you options in game to make necessary changes
3. Due to these positions being the engine room of the team you will always have players unavailable through either;
A) Injury or B) Suspension

So currently right now we start with Casemiro, Mount and Bruno against Wolves and have S Mctominay and
C Ericsen on the bench but both are really attacking midfielders and you have no CDM, or true CM to change the game if need arises in that area of the team!

And K Mainoo is injured and the season not started?

Last season Ericsen, Mctominay, DVB and Sabitzer all had lengthy injury spells and Casemeiro missed 7 games through suspension.

If we manage to get Bayindir(5M), Amrabat(25M) and Todibo(30M) this season, I think we will have a very solid squad.

Onana/Bayindir
AWB/Dalot
Varane/Todibo
Martinez/Lindelof
Shaw/Malacia
Casemiro/Amrabat
Mount/Mainoo
Bruno/Eriksen
Antony/Sancho
Rashford/Garnacho
Hojlund/Martial

This is a decent first XI, and solid backups. If we can upgrade the yellow positions next summer, our squad will be in a very good place.

I would argue that MG is also a first team squad player, and arguably the first choice right winger, as I see Sancho playing more through the middle anyway (eventually taking over from Eriksen).

This season we have upgraded 3 first team players and are looking for 3 more back ups, as per above, although I would love to get another striker (Orban) in now as well. Next season it is more like 2 and 2 required, which is where a stable squad should be, turning over approximately every 6 years, with a handful of players ending up staying for much longer.

Still need to sign before window shuts

Pavard/Todibo
Lavia (if McTominay goes)
Backup 9 (if we can sell Martial)

Onana/Henderson/?
Frimpong/AWB
Todibo/?
Martinez/Lindelof
Shaw/Malacia
Casemiro/Amrabat
Mount/Mainoo
Bruno/Sancho
MG/Antony
Rashford/Garnacho
Hojlund/Rashford/MG
Realistically this will probably be our aim for the next window/summer.

Frimpong as a RB upgrade
If we get Packard then Tobido next summer, if we get Tobido then we would just need cover.

As much as I don't want to have him anywhere near the club I'm getting a feeling MG will be back and will mean we would have enough front line cover, maybe just needing a back-up striker.

I know I’m asking for too much, but can all the current market activity and that which is still to come over the next 3 weeks please put a stop to the annual June lamenting and BS about ‘well run clubs already have their business done by now’ and the sarcastic responses to those daring to point out that the market isn’t even open yet? Left to some of you, the window would be closed as soon as preseason starts.

That game should have brought folk back to reality.

We still need a lot of players, and some of us have been banging on about this for some time now.
