What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

It wouldn't be a never ending story of who we need if we just signed a top manager that is still in their prime

At the very top of this list, before any player, is a new member of the coaching team who can teach us how to defend set pieces.

I have very little confidence that the club will sanction atleast 2 big deals this summer.
So I expect a similar Covid cautious transfer window.

For me, cb and Sancho are first two requirements with a midfielder if Pogba leaves. With covid situation, unsure which targets we will sign. Can anybody remember total spending last summer?

For me I go back to, before we just keep throwing money at it and signing better players. We have to be happy that the manager handling them can get the best out of them.

There is no point giving Ole top players, he can't tactically setup a system to deliver consistency

CB, CM, RW, Striker and a GK. List gets longer everytime we play a game it feels. Oh and a better manager could help

The case surrounding Beek is a slightly concerning one heading into yet another Covid cautious transfer window.

Why doesn’t Ole bring back Rene as a coach, he was brilliant, that’s the first signing. Second, Ronaldo for one year only. Go get a damn good CB because Lindelof and Bailly are shit. Another ball playing, imaginative DCM to replace Fred

Sign Varane, sign a MF and then sign either Harry Kane or Sancho.

Even then i am hesitant about Ole as manager.

Centre back, midfielder, winger, striker and back up right back. Also Carlos Querioz 2.0 for the coaching staff.

We need three players who come into this starting 11 and make it better.

We cannot progress with Lindelof or Bailly playing. Ole has done wonders with stopping the likes of Rojo/Smalling/Jones getting game time. He needs a top CB to play with Maguire.

I'm sick of seeing our central midfield area so disjointed and poor. We do not control games from midfield. We have three decent CM's (Fred/McTom/Matic) we have one technically brilliant midfield player we dont play (Van De Beek) and one player with all the ability in the world who churns out performances worthy of Sunday league (Pogba). What we dont have is any midfield pairing capable of controlling a game

While Cavani is great - we need an attacking player. Cavani will be 35 and we cant over burden him or be stuck with Martial.

I'm hopeful we can get a lot of business done this summer. 8-9 out and 4 in would be perfect

Yea i agree. I think as well Pogba should be one of the ones shown the door. Was good for about half an hour in the first half last night and that was all. The ego of the lad, thinks he is Lionel messi or something. He only plays good about ten games a season.

Perfect summer

First off clear the deadwood wages: Romeo, Grant, both Pereiras, Jones, Dalot, Chong - Now we have Heaton and other youngsters comign thorugh, none of them need replacing. £10-20m in fees and surely similar if not a lot more in wages saved that DONT need replacing bar Heatons.

Second off clear out the players dont have a future here or are no longer good options within the squad or are ageing - Mata, Lingard, James, Matic. Bar maybe Matic within the squad, isnt really anybody needs replacing. £40-70m in fees possibly

For me that is a minimum we should be doing of clearign the decks this summer, ELEVEN players that can bring in £50-90m potentially in fees and a huge amount off of the wage bill. I would argue fee and wages, just clearing this lot out adds at least another £100m to the coffers

The crucial part for me this summer is who we sell from some of our big first team squad players that raise money. Quite a list of names that split opinions on here: DeGea, Bailly, Fred, Pogba, Martial

Personally split on DeGea, forget the penalties the other night, he has always been rubbish at them. He ahsnt been the same keeper for a few years. I think he has been ok the last few months though and crucially Henderson as of yet hasnt taken his chance, I would keep him.

Bailly I like but the injury record, the moments of rashness still in his game and the fact we need to sign a new cb full stop. I would sell him £20m

Fred
has improved, I dont rate him much at all though personally, though he has his uses and with Matic leaving, he is a valuable squad member, at the moment...keep him

Pogba
for me is the most obvious sale of all for me. An £80m players wanting a £100m contract that is sitll dividing opinion. People either want him on the left or want us to rebuild the team to accomodate him better or think with a more defensive midfield partner he will flourish. More problems than solutions Saving that huge contract of possibly £100m and cash in £60m

VDB
Decent player, decent squad option, not playing, dont see him playin g ahuge amount next season either, sell £30m

Martial
Ikeep hm purely as he is versatile, I would be already sellign so many players and we dotn have so may strikers....and the one I would add is another old one, and he is talented too.....keep him for one more season

Transfer fee wise that is £160-190m raised and you coudl double that on wages I wouldnt include.

Incoming I would like us to sign FIVE quality signings:

A centre back, two central midfielders, a quality attackign player, a striker

CB: Marqhuinos the dream, Varane great, for me its out of Romagnoli or Romero though £30m
CM: There are just so many from bargains like Zakaria/Kamara who would probably be about £30m to the likes of Rice around £80m. Im just going to go for my dream two that offer everything all over the pitch and are also sound defensively Camavinga and Barella £120m
Attacking Player: Torn between Grealish and Sancho - I am just going for Grealish as so unique what he offers and more versatile £80m
CF: Kane is just too expensive for me this summer with what we need as we have Cavani, for me its the short term fix, big wages but we havealready saved a lot on wages from selling Pogba and all te other players....Ronaldo £20m. Not only another great player for the youngsters, a winner, a goal machine and also offers cover for both flanks even at his age we get a good season or two from him.

£250m spend on transfer fees - £60-90m net spend

DeGea
Bissaka
Maguire
Romero
Shaw
Barella
Camavinga
Fernandes
Rashford
Ronaldo
Greenwood

Henderson
Williams
Lindelof
Tuanzabe
Telles
Fred
McTominay
Grealish
Martial
Cavani
Amad

Still have Mengi, Garner, Laird Pellestri, Hannibal, Elanga and Shoetire to add to two pretty strong teams.

SO many options as well 7 players coudl play left wing, 5 could play right wing for me and 6 could play up front when you include the youngsters.

But being realistic, I expect something much smaller like:

Out: Deadwood as stated out pretty much, Mata and Lingard out, DeGea out £70m raised - Sancho and Rice possibly in £150m

We should make a big for Hakimi as Inter are in need of cash and he's an outstanding RB who can play RW as well

DDG
Bissaka Kounde Maguire Shaw
Rice VDB/McT/Fred
Greenwood Bruno Grealish
Cavani

Heaton
Axel Bailly Lindelof Telles
McFred
Diallo Bruno/Grealish Rashford
Martial

Sell:
Pogba = 50m
Lingard = 25m
Dean = 30m
James = 25m
Matic = 10m

Buy:
Grealish (80m)
Kounde (50m)
Rice (80m)
Heaton (Free)

Realistic?? If we want an attacker, CDM, and a CB together, the only way to do it is by selling Pogba in my opinion.

I agree with a lot of what you say in terms of wanting the club to do it. Its just completely unfeasible to sell all those players in one summer though. Transfers are incredibly complicated nowadays and no club in the world has enough lawyers/accountants to work through all the logistics of selling those players in one winder. Not to mention then also having to do the same for the number of transfers in you want.
You also need to have a sale lined up before you can buy which complicates things further. As a club you can't just risk selling a huge chunk of your squad without already having most of their replacements signed, or at least have the paperwork prepared. Ronaldo as one example would take weeks from a team of lawyers to organise a purchase. Then imagine the same for Pogba moving the other way.
Barcelona have been able to move quickly on Wijnaldum, Garcia, Aguero and possibly Depay is because there is no sale fee or image rights to transfer because the players are out of contract. Makes it much quicker and easy.

With Pogba:
Rice Sancho Varane or other starters for those positions

Without Pogba
Rice Sancho Varane Grealish? Or other starters for those positions

It may look like an impossible FIFA summer but the Glazers/Woodward/Ole caused this by wasting last summer.

One or two of these positions should have been sorted last year.

Sancho, Ings, Varane and Rice.

Sancho: 80 million. Ings: Not sure, maybe 25 million. Varane: 40 million, maybe a bit more. Rice: 30 million plus Lingard, probably not enough though.

In my opinion for the far future - CB, another RB, DM, another CAM for the bench, Another LW, Another ST for bench.

Tried to let the dust settle on the season before thinking of this. In my opinion we still need a lot.

City's strength in depth compared to ours is miles ahead. They have two class players in almost every position and I think we need similar, plus better squad rotation to challenge. I remember having the feeling during the Europa semi last year that Ole didn't trust many players outside of his first XI. We had a rubbish transfer window and as a result you can tell he still doesn't trust many players outside of his first team.

Goalkeeper:

Bit of a nightmare scenario this because it could really go in any direction. One could go with the other staying, both could go, both could stay.

If I'm being brutally honest I don't think de Gea is good enough any more and I don't really see Henderson being an incredible keeper either. Sure he commands his area better but there are plenty of goalkeepers who do that. If we're serious about challenging and reaching the top again I genuinely think we'd have to go out and buy a new keeper. Someone like Oblak if that was possible. I'm not sure who else could be an option.

Defenders:

I think we can all see what Maguire brings to the defense. Shaw has been superb and I do think AWB is good but needs competition. Lindelof is a good defender but is prone to the ocassional shocker of a game so I think he would be the one needing replacing in the first XI. He would be an excellent back-up option. Again I'm never going to be 100% on who we'd need as I only really watch Utd and the Prem but obviously names like Kounde and Pau Torres have been thrown around. I think pace is a bonus but it's not always necessary if your tactics are right.

Midfield:

McTominay and Fred both have places in the team I think but not to start every game. If we can reach the position where these players are squad depth instead of starting I think we'll start getting somewhere. They both have great attributes but I think we need a more all-rounder. We 100% need a DM more than anything I feel. Rice would be perfect and I rate him highly. Perhaps Ndidi if Soumare is joining Leicester. I do like Bissouma and also Anguissa but not as convinced as I am with Rice. Also think a young promising CM would be great here. I was gutted we missed out on Bellingham. Someone press resistant with a good passing range would be nice.

Attack:

Our attack is lop-sided and we need genuine threat from the right. Sancho would obviously offer that though he does seem to play better on the left. It would at least give us options and allow us to rest Rashford without a drop in quality though. I really have no idea what will happen with Martial as personally I think he is best on the left too but perhaps his time is up. Cavani would be our only recognised striker as I see the rest as inside wide players. I don't know if we wait a year and try for Haaland though.

Ideally the squad next season would be:

GK: New GK, Henderson as backup.
RB: AWB, Attacking RB as competition.
CB: Maguire, New CB, Lindelof, Tuanzebe.
LB: Shaw, Telles.
CDM: Rice, Fred (Maybe Matic stays? Unsure)
CM: Pogba, McTominay, New midfielder
CAM: Bruno, Maybe VDB or Hannibal gets more game time
LW/RW: Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood, James, Martial?
ST: Cavani, backup/first team striker?

Anyone not mentioned would be loaned, or sold.

No way are we signing six players to fit into the team. I think it will be three players to fit into the team and possibly two back ups. So Sancho, a CB, a MF to fit into the team. Then Heaton and a covering RB or striker.

I know it’s unlikely but it’s what I think we’d need to challenge. Two summers possibly but a lot could change in that time.

Yeah pretty much. Can't see a starting goalkeeper coming, we're signing Heaton so it'll likely be Henderson and Heaton there. Trippier to back up Wan Bissaka. Torres/Kounde to partner Lindelof, though I'm not sure which of Bailly or Tuanzebe go. Would love Rice but don't see it happening this summer but it's a must. Put VDB as a CM there, Mejbri to back up Bruno the rare times he's rested (or more likely Pogba/VdB fill in), and move Martial to backup striker and that's what I'd say is the best case scenario for our squad next season. So would be:
  • Heaton, Trippier, Torres, Rice, Sancho in for probably 200m
  • Raise 50m in sales
  • Net spend 150m
Unfortunately I just don't see the Rice transfer happening though if we want to challenge, we need a starting caliber DM, CB & RW without a doubt, as well as RB depth.

Next year would then be focus on CF, whether that is Greenwood long term and we need a backup or we have to buy a starter, and then focus on the deeper playmaker to partner Rice, and lastly a top GK. But we need the CB/DM/RW this window for sure as we can make do with Pogba/Fred for midfield Cavani and Henderson in the other iffy positions next season.

Bring in Donnarumma and sell DeGea....net positive of 20m as Donnarumma is on a free

Varane would be my guy as he reminds me a lot of Rio when he was at his best. Would bring calm and experience to our back line. He'd cost you 45m but 25m in total after selling DeGea.

You have Rice listed which is going to take at least 75-80m which is WAAAYYYY overpriced when you could bring in two guys like Neves and Bissouma for the price which adds depth and young talent.

Sancho is a must buy which will probably be 80m and he is worth spending the money on as he solves our right wing plus he provides goals and assists.

The last guy i would really consider is Grealish as he can play the CAM or the LW. He's probably 80m as well but you could possibly consider selling Martial to help raise those funds.

You could possibly bring in Donnarumma, Varane, Rice, Sancho for 165m which is around the net spend that i saw one report claim United would be willing to spend this summer to back Ole.

The question now revolves around could you sell enough players like Lingard, Periera, Bailly/Lindelof/Tuanzebe to make enough to purchase Grealish. If that would be able to happen, it would be the cherry to top off a brilliant summer window.

Don’t get all the Rice love on the Caf. If he was truly quality, you’d have Bayern, Real and PSG circling. He’s a classic England national hyped player who has a VERY narrow skill set. 70m for that?

Note: I do like my players to be able to dribble, pass and shoot at a decent level. Please excuse the bias.

Agree with all apart from Williams as think we will go for Trippier and provided we can get at least TWO of CB, CDM & RW then could live with that as reckon it will push AWB on like we saw when Telles came in at LB

For me I go back to, before we just keep throwing money at it and signing better players. We have to be happy that the manager handling them can get the best out of them.

There is no point giving Ole top players, he can't tactically setup a system to deliver consistency

How does a coach tactically set up a system to deliver consistency?

What is it about Ole's tactics that leads to inconsistent performances?

Was there no point giving Ole Bruno? Or Cavani?

Gosh. I mean you obviously want Ole out. But let’s assume the board disagree with you. Let’s assume Ole is here for at least another season. Every player we bring in that is better than one of our current first 11 improves the team; that’s without Ole or anyone else doing anything.

Given results this year, with a couple of good new players, we’re going to be very close to the title.

So it’s hard to see any merit in the argument that it’s pointless giving Ole new players.
