What did Hillary do wrong and what's next for her?

Pretty much just a few points in the latter stages. It was unexpected she'd win the popular vote by anything more than 4-5%, and even that was optimistic.

National ones had her ahead about 3-4, she'll end up ahead by 1-2. The big miss was in polling upper midwestern states.
She was supposedly well ahead when we were debating the point though.

In sports there is a tendency after a big game for people think that won were great and the team that lost was horrible if it was decided by small margins. This is what is happening here. If anything this was like a really poorly played World Cup final where Trump won on penalty kicks after getting slightly outplayed. Trump lost the popular vote and had less voters than Romney or McCain. It really came down to a few states that Trump just barely won. This election really came down to thousands of voters.

It's the fact that Hillary was the overwhelming favourite and lost that makes this different.

She snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It's like City losing the FA cup final to Wigan in 2013.The simple fact that they lost means they did something wrong.

I'm sure there were some misogynists who didn't vote for her simply because she's a woman but I don't think that was the major reason for her defeat.

And I hope they don't just chalk it up to that and carry on as before, the whole democrat party and system needs a shake up to make sure Trump doesn't win again in 4 years.

Being the a bought establishment candidate was her biggest problem. I know some liberals want to make it out that she was hated because she was a woman and some probably didn't vote for her because of that but the majority are simply sick of voting these politicians into office. On top of that she wasn't charismatic enough, unlike Obama, to make up for her lack of integrity.

I mean she didn't even lose because Trump got more votes than the guys that ran before him, it's just that she got significantly less votes than Obama did the two elections before that.

Democrats need to understand that there is a deep frustration with big corporate money in politics and that no party at this stage really seems to care about the people anymore. A democratic candidate who doesn't understand that will stand no chance even in 2020 to mobilize enough of the frustrated left voters that got even more disenfranchised when Sanders, in their opinion, got cheated out of the primaries.

It's quite simple if the democrats will just keep thinking it was only due to the racism and misogyny of Trump supporters that Hillary lost they are missing the real issue and will lose the next election against Trump as well.

The Dems are already recharging for the next couple of cycles - Howard Dean throws his name in the hat for DNC chair.

DNC - Howard Dean

Pres - Bernie/Liz ticket

They will be old but I'd imagine people won't care by then. The Dems have to go full on populist next time.

He lost women overall, and thus the popular vote too.

He outperformed on white women with and without college degrees, as well as with Latinos, which ultimately won him the Presidency. The two demographics that Dem elites thought would be outraged because of his comments, actually did the opposite. If not for his strong Latino turnout, FL and AZ may have been more in play for her. If not for White women voting for him, MI, WI, and PA would've gone to her.

And by a bigger margin than Mitt "Binder full of women" Romney, and won men by a larger amount than any candidate since HW (when the US was far less diverse).

Meaning? It's relevant for Europe, too, which is why I am asking. I am not sure we should fight fire with fire.

Meaning do what Bernie did this past cycle, but on a grander scale. Bernie and Liz need to be the standard bearers (with Dean running the DNC). In the US that means full on - single payer health care, wall street reform, free education etc. Basically an unapologetic social Democratic platform that Bernie pushes.

The question now is: After Trump who's the next candidate, people voted to the unknown because they are tired of the establishment, basically both parties lost because no one knows whats his next step, will Trump open his arms to the republican party after they abandoned him? So after the 4 or 8 years who's going to be the ideal candidate? The Clintons and the Bushes are done, we will need a candidate who looks to the peoples face and is color blind, someone who doesn't see races but classes, someone who will try to short the bridge from the poor to the middle class without using welfare but giving people jobs.

Bernie and liz together would be too much to the left and Bernie will be too old anyway.

Bernie, Warren and Schumer all look to be backing Keith Ellison for the DNC, which is a pretty broad church of support.

The best thing the DNC can do is sack absolutely everyone and start out fresh.

And sticking Debbie Wasserman Schultz on one way rocket to the moon.

The mayor of LA visited NZ a few months back, I hadnt really heard of him before but he came across really well in interviews here. I still know very little about him but he was asked by various interviewers here if he was ever likely to run for President and he sidestepped those questions each time. Is he someone regarded as someone who could run or be a credible candidate? I only know of him via those interviews where he came across well but know nothing more of his track record or ability etc
