What current players would you have as next season's starting 11?

This would be mine.

I feel we need a few first choice players:
CB - Laporte/Stones
CM - Gundogan etc
RW - Griezmann/Lucas Moura

We could also do with reinforcements in attack such as Sane or another striker.

--------------------------------De Gea----------------------------------
Darmian-------------Smalling---------Stones-------------------Shaw
-----------------------------Schneiderlin--------------------------------
-----------------------Herrera----------Rúben--------------------------
Griezmann--------------------Kane----------------------------Martial

Wouldn't mind someone to compete with Darmian, no idea how Valencia will turn out when he returns; Good squad options in Memphis, Adnan, Mata, Blind and Young etc.

De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Martial.

A new CB, CM, RW and LW/FW (can switch positions around with Martial). The bench will be much stronger too (though I can see players like Mata leaving if they don't step it up). There's the Rooney problem too.

It might be too early to judge. Who knows, maybe some players will step it up in the second half of this season and warrant a starting place.

I also think it could be worth sticking with Blind at CB. He's not doing too badly, and the Smalling - Blind partnership looks decent. Only suggested a new CB since it's probably what United need to seriously challenge on all fronts.

For me, they are the only players worth keeping in the squad, let alone team.

I pretty much concur with your eight choices if Darmian and Memphis can come good. These eight could be the foundations of our next great side, although perhaps not under LVG.

You perhaps can't also rule out Young as a starter on his consistency of performance alone and I do like Blind, perhaps more so in the midfield. Rooney could also be tried in midfield again if he can now accept that he no longer has the legs to be a #9 or #10 and has to play there. Rooney, BFS and Carrick are great squad options to have but the latter two may not be able to play much more than a half, especially Carrick.

In the team:

De Gea
Darmian
Smalling
Shaw
Schneiderlin
Schweinsteiger
Martial

Pretty much this. If we can get another proper central midfielder to join Schneiderlin I think Blind is worthy of a spot too. His game reading and on the ball ability more than make up for his physical weakness, if he's properly protected.

Our biggest weakness is certainly in attack. Memphis needs to pull his finger out and we don't have anyone at all on the right.

De Gea
XXXX Smalling XXXXX Shaw
Morgan
XXXX Ander
XXXX XXXXX Martial
Memphis and Darmian can be excused as it's their first year here, but so far they haven't been showing the neccessary quality to start for us.

Stones, Tielemans and Sane should be top prioritys plus one world class attacking player like Higuain.

De gea
Smalling
Shaw
Morgan
Martial

Need 6 new first teamers for me. 4 of who need to be top class.(ie 50-60 million pounds each - the price you pay for chronic underinvestment over the last 5 years)

Most of our current starting 11 should only be good enough for our squad.

GK: De Gea (although I suspect he'll be at RM)
RB: ???
LB: Shaw (if he makes a full recovery)
CB: Smalling
CB: ???
CM: Schneiderlin
CM: ???
AMR: ???
AMC: ???
AML: ???
STR: ???

Some of the current squad are good enough as squad players though e.g. Blind, Rojo, Jones, BFS, Martial*, Memphis, Herrera, Mata, Rooney (but too expensive / big ego for a squad role)

* Edit: I know some will throw their hands up in horror that I didn't include Martial in the first XI - it's not that I don't rate him (I think he is an excellent player / prospect) just that at his age I don't think we should plan for him to be an "every game" player, we could burn him out / put too much pressure on him. That's not to say he wouldn't get loads of games anyway - with our injury record he'd still probably end up playing most games!

Depay/Darmian are on the verge of being sold they've been that bad. I hope they come good.

Regular starters from the current squad?

De Gea
Varela Smalling Jones Shaw
Herrera Schneiderlin Blind
Pereira Martial Memphis

I've been very hard on Memphis here but I'm sticking with him to come through for us next season. Obviously, Rooney needs to be let go. Blind doesn't get a lot of love on the caf but I see him as an outstanding lef midfielder for us, a player who's gained defensive strength in his role at CB this season and who clearly has a great eye for a final ball. I see great things in Pereira's future and I hope it's with us. Darmian has wobbled after a great start but I've been impressed by Varela so far -- better offensive and defensive potential than Darmian.

Rojo, Darmian, McNair and Valencia can serve when needed.

But we need some upgrades. For me it's the following:

CB: I'd go with Laporte for a massive upgrade over Jones, who's a fine squad man but too inconsistent.
RW: I've been on the Griezmann bandwagon but Felipe Anderson might actually be the better option for us.

Players to let go/retire: The list has to begin with Rooney, who's either physically broken down or just not up for it any longer. Carrick has had a great career but all good things must come to an end. Fellaini, of course. Mata, as he just doesn't have the speed/power to make an impact at this level any longer. To backfill those four losses I would definitely look to our young players first, although I'd like to see us take a fresh look at Strootman in the summer.

I don't know what we do in the event Dave goes. That's best discussed in a separate thread.

Definites:
DDG, Smalling, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Martial.

Players I'd be ok with being in and around the first XI:
Darmian (early season form), Blind, Mata...Maybe Schweinsteiger

Bench options:
CBJ, Varela, Carrick, BFS, Young, Memphis, Wilson, Lingard, Pereira

Yup, me too. Bit confusing why so many others are.

I don't see why it's confusing that people don't put a 31 year old injury prone player who can barely last the full 90 minutes in the future plans of this team. He is a good squad player though and a big personality in the dressing room.

No way am I giving up on Basti just yet.

I'll admit when he first arrived I was very excited - thought it was a bit of a steal. But it turns out guardiola knows more about football than me (who would have thought it). If he isn't good enough for Bayern he isn't good enough for us. That's the level we should be targeting.

Sure, he's on the downside of his career. But as you say, his personality is great for the dressing room and he's a player who's won everything. I'm not saying he should be in our long-term plans, but I'd be fine with him being in the starting XI next season. He hasn't dropped that much from his top level of a couple years ago. The reality is that the current state of our team is such that we got a lot more holes to address before Schweinsteiger. :(

DDG
Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Shaw
Young, Schniderlin, Swinesteiger, Memphis
Rooney, Martial

442 / 451 (Rooney as 10) / 433

Exactly, he still has value but not week in and week out as a starter, more in the mold we used to use Scholes in his latter days.

We have a lot of players who are squad player quality, so it's not like we need to sell a lot of them. Just we need basically 4 or 5 starting quality players. Darmian at right back I'm iffy about. He's a good player, but at a club like United, you need your fullbacks to be really good attacking wise, and I don't think he's got that in him really. No idea who we would buy though since there's like no right backs out there. Memphis has the potential but probably not starting quality yet.

I think in the summer transfer window we will sign a Number 10, CB, Winger and maybe even another CM for the first team. The sad thing is that if we're building a title challenging squad we'll need more than that ie left and right backs cover - I think, but I have been doing a career on Fifa recently so my judgement may be skewed.

I think we should look to sell Mata and Rooney if we can replace them. I'm fed up with Rooney playing but I like Mata it's just I think we could get more productive players than him.

How injury prone has Schweinsteiger been exactly?

I'd be keeping De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Herrera and Martial.

Put Gundogan instead of Ruben, and this would be my team too.

That front three would get 60+ goals per season.

De Gea, Smalling, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Herrera and Martial are good enough for the top team we're aspiring to be.

I'm okay with Blind as CB. Schweinsteiger can be a very good player if we use him the right way. I believe Darmian will come good next season, actual winger in front of him would've helped.

Not sure about Mata, I wouldn't put him anywhere near first XI and I'd rather give playing time to Pereira as a squad player.

I am indifferent about Memphis, wouldn't mind if he left us in the summer to be honest. Can't see the "obvious potential" and I think we're wasting our time with him on the left wing. Maybe if we can't get a proper striker we can give him a shot up front.

First need: an actual right winger. Someone who can beat players and drag the defenders wide. I said it last summer, not getting RW will bite us this season. Now our right wing is no existent.

Second need: a striker. I like Aubameyang, Kane would be good too.

Third need: CM (Gundogan?) and CB.

I reckon it can be done in 2 years but will cost us a fortune (couldn't care less if you ask me).

I quite like Blind as a centre half but would prefer a long-term option there and wouldn't be surprised to see him used as another midfield option under a new manager.

Schweinsteiger can be reasonable but isn't particularly mobile and always seems a bit jaded towards the end of a lot of games so I'd welcome another option there.

Obviously we are massively lacking in wide positions. Hopefully we'll bring in some young talent a la Martial.

I'd like to see a midfield of Schneiderlin, Blind and Herrera. Blind in the quarterback role with a proper enforcer beside him for the first time in Schneiderlin. Then Darmian, Smalling and Shaw alongside one more top class centre back in defence. Martial needs two more alongside him up front and we need another midfielder who can be back up or more suited to certain games than Blind.

I'd keep Bastian in and make him captain as I would try to buy younger players and would need a calm and experienced leader. I also think he has plenty to offer with good players around him. I'd take Greizmann over Felipe Anderson but the latter seems more likely and I do rate him too. I'd keep Mata to rotate with Ander and Memphis to play when any of Martial, Ander, Anderson etc were out, so he'd play plenty. Fellaini, Rooney, Jones would be gone.
