Westminster Politics 2024-2029

Besides what Pexbo said, just the line 'The vibe I bring to the function' sounds so cringey and awkward, especially if it's meant to be Starmer, a 62 year old guy.
I always forget Starmer is in his 60’s. Probably due to the fact every other politician is 100 years old.

Its seem we will see more awful social media posts in the future -

Labour group tells MPs they must be on YouTube and TikTok

Group asks influencers and popular figures to help party’s backbenchers engage audiences and challenge narratives

Confidence in the government will not improve unless they get their faces and ideas on online media platforms including YouTube, a group of Labour MPs has warned colleagues.

The Labour Growth Group of about 110 MPs is working with leading podcasters and popular figures to help Labour backbenchers become influencers in their own right, amid concerns that toxic narratives about the party’s agenda, its politicians and its policies are going unchallenged.

Nearly 20 councils in England ‘at risk of insolvency’ due to Send costs

Exclusive: Councils say multibillion-pound debts caused by years of overspends on special educational needs support

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/mar/30/councils-england-insolvency-risk-send-costs

Overspending on special educational needs and disability (Send) services in England is forecast to grow by nearly £2bn over the next 12 months, a Guardian investigation shows.

So that's SEND utterly screwed then.

George osborne's austerity programs cut council funding by as much as 60%.

When they now talk about council underfunding, is basically governments simply walking away from funding necessary services.

Yet osborne will appear on the media rounds from time to time, treated as a grandee and all round good bloke. And no one will ever confront him with the misery and death he caused.

True, but things are even worse than that.

Local authorities are raising money through increasing council taxes, meaning it is individual households that are covering some of this shortfall, not central government. It is a very regressive way of funding local services, and it is nowhere near enough as well.

Just switched sky news on to the headline of Starmer saying 'illegal immigration makes me angry'

He so often says lines that sound like they could easily be Alan Partridge.

The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome as adults and less burden on the state at that time. But obviously everyone cares about the now, and what comes later is someone else's problem. I hope we have level heads here considering this an investment to get SEN children the help they need to become contributing members of society or at least less dependent on welfare, but I think we all know what is going to happen.

Who are main creditors for all this council debt?

Not really sure what mechanisms kick in when a council declares itself bankrupt? There are surely a base level of services and employees they need to retain and they're still getting some income in.

The Treasury these days, it used to be a seperate body but they moved in to the treasury a few years back. I'm sure there's other lenders but most of it is back to central government which seems a lot like a budgeting trick.

Polish woman, 80, faces deportation from UK after mistakenly filling in form online

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...-home-office-application-mistake-online-paper

A Polish woman has been threatened with deportation by the Home Office because her application form to stay was accidentally filled in online instead of on paper.

Elzbieta Olszewska, 80, had been living alone in her flat in Warsaw before arriving in the UK last September. Her only child, Michal Olszewski, 52, an aeronautical engineer who lives in Lincoln with his wife, had been travelling regularly to the Polish capital to support her.

Olszewski has been living in the UK since 2006, initially as a EU citizen. He subsequently became a British citizen and has dual Polish-UK nationality. As his mother has become increasingly frail he wanted her to move to the UK so he and his wife could care for her properly. There is a legal route under the settlement scheme for people in Olszewski’s situation to bring parents to the UK.

On 25 March the Home Office finally responded, informing the family: “Unfortunately your application is not valid and we are unable to accept it.”

The rejection letter went on to say: “The required application process for someone applying as a family member of a relevant naturalised British citizen is to use the appropriate paper form. Your application was made online. There is no right of appeal in respect of an invalid application.”

Cases are decided on merit. She will re-apply correctly and all will be well.

Not even worth reporting really. Next.

Horrible but not surprising.

The weirdest bit of Labours lurch right is how quickly the cult is willing to follow the rhetoric like this. I've described it before but it's like they cosplay as a Labour minister which I just find fundamentally bonkers. How weak is people's underlying character or is it sociopaths?

I work in finance which is obviously famous for caring about people, not in a million years would we put an old lady in distress over an admin error. The Home office process is clearly purposely uncaring and harsh.

Thanks and yep, does sound like accounting sleight of hand.

They’re trying to outflank the right from the right. Which never works.

When you try to outflank the right from the right, what is the actual point of you anymore? Their whole shtick at the minute seems to be just that they are better and more responsible Tories than the Tories.

Also should be a bigger story

Are council’s accounts publicly available like LTD’s? Just curious

Edit, nevermind, found them

Cutting the farming subsidy for sustainable farm practices like leaving patches for wildflowers is a pretty disgraceful thing to do with absolutely no notice. I'm sure it hardly even registers in the noise of shortsighted cuntery from these arseholes at this point but just thought I'd say. What a hopeless, pointless waste of space of a government.

These cuts have nothing to do with getting people into work.

More than half of job centres are reducing support for people claiming universal credit due to a shortage of work coaches, according to a report from the public spending watchdog.

The National Audit Office said reasons for cutbacks included a lack of funding and challenges in recruiting and retaining staff.
It comes as the number of claimants being categorised as requiring support has risen from 2.6 million to 3 million in the space of a year.

The government said it was redeploying 1,000 work coaches to help, but a charity campaigning to end poverty said the shortage undermined plans announced in the chancellor's Spring Statement to get more disabled people into work.

Iain Porter, senior policy adviser at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, said the government's promise to boost employment had been used to "justify the biggest cuts to disability benefits in recent memory".

"The government must urgently explain how it plans to support disabled people into work while these work coach shortages remain," he said.

It’s cool that there’s a good and a evil version of Starmer.

The thing that is sickening about this for me is that it’s one thing to react to this rhetoric for political gain - anti-immigration policies are catnip for right wing voters and the public is majority right wing cnuts.

It’s another thing entirely to contribute to this rhetoric. There isn’t an election this year, it’s not for 4 years for feck sake so why not change the rhetoric?

No wonder their director of comms is gone.
Whoever has replaced him is seemingly into UKIP techno.

@Frosty & @Nogbadthebad will know more than me but I’m pretty sure Morgan McSweeney(Chief of Staff)is a insane right winger.

He will be pushing all sort of baseless shite about how Labour need to be anti immigrant in order to win over reform voters(Along with the standard hatred of any left wing ideas). Plus it’s safe to assume the most accurate version of Starmer is the one as PM and not the “social democrat” of the leadership bid.

It’s the easiest form of politics which is a theme of Starmer Labour. Attacking the most vulnerable and appealing to people laziest stereotypes all while at the same time getting a bunch of freebies.

If Starmer crashes out at the next election then a role as chief NATO chair sniffer is a guarantee. Which was probably the main goal of the project from the very start.

McSweeney is the man behind Starmer. He’s an absolute thundercnut. A proper Tory wanker.

McSweeney's view of Labour is to focus on patriotism and social conservatism, coupled with social democratic economics.

I can only assume that as there is no money available due to Reeves's fiscal rules, there is a major if not sole focus on social conservative and patriotic policies to gain favour with the electorate.

They fail to realise Reform voters won't like Labour no matter what they do so it's pointless going after them.

They fail to realise Reform voters won't like Labour no matter what they do so it's pointless going after them.

Worse. Numbers show disabled voters are miles ahead with reform than any other party, and this is a symptom of what is going on. For 14 years the tories stomped on them hard, so they voted for labour for change. And what do labour do when they eventually get power? They stomp on them even harder.

So now they are turning to reform. Reform will not help them, but here is the thing, most people spend their lives just trying to get by, not folloing every in and out of politics. Torties have proven they will treat this group badly, and so have labour. The only hope they have is that the alternative, and probably the only alternative who could get power, will do something different. So they vote for it.

I'm not suggesting farage is hitler or mussolini, but this is exactly how they won power in the 1930's, when the working class majority were basically thrown to the wolves by the political class. It will repeat itself here next election unless something changes drastically.

As for mcsweeney, he's a true believer, an arch blairite who still thinks that an asset bubble driven rise in borrowing is the key to wealth because it worked for tony, and all he has to do is get rid of red tape to allow the borrowing to commence. 2008 ended that particular 'strategy' though, and as with all zealots he won't ever admit his way is not the way any more, with disastrous consequences.

A lot of those voters have turned to Reform already because of the blame the migrant policy which Farage has. They want to blame migrants for all of their problems and Farage has tapped into that. Just as he blamed the EU during the Brexit vote. Voting Reform will achieve feck all, they may win a few Council seats in the upcoming elections but they couldn't run a bath. It remains to be seen where they are when the next General comes around. Farage is as bad a racist and Xenophobe as anyone.

UK finalising Chagos deal with Mauritius, says No 10

The UK government is working with Mauritius to finalise a deal on the future of the Chagos Islands, Downing Street has said.

Under the proposed agreement, Mauritius would gain sovereignty of the islands from the UK, but allow the US and UK to continue operating a military base on one of the islands for an initial period of 99 years, at a cost to the British taxpayer.

UK government sources have indicated they are not waiting for further sign-off from Donald Trump.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c230k9ljnnmo

Let's hope this is sorted soon, the land returned and the Chagossians being given a right to return home.
