West Indies vs England - Tests and One Day Series

What is the pitch/outfield looking like? Haven't watched the match so far, but judging by St.Kitts' huge total, I assumed we were in for a batting pitch.

The outfield's a bit slow by all accounts, and the pitch is definitely one we'll be hoping that Panesar can profit from.

Broad had a poor start, a fair few rujs went to him when i was listening to one of his overs.

Gale just reached his half century in 70 balls, him and Sarwan have played themselves in and seem comfortable. Strauss might be getting a little concerned about the effectiveness of the attack if this keeps up.

get rid of the feckin' lot of 'em.

Flintoff and Pietersen are both millionaires after last night, none of them give a feck.

Pissed and angry!!

fecking hell!
saw the score 12/3, was watching the Liverpool game.. switched over and see 23/5!

then another 2 go.

Brilliant bowling by Jerome Taylor

Fair play to the windies. We're a complete joke. When you remove idiots like pietersen then we might have a chance of winning.

ha brilliant. Yeah lets drop our best batsmen! Idiot.

It is time though that the selectors picked the best team rather than the best individuals. Shah will get the nod for the 2nd test, and so will Rashid- even though monty is the better spinner at least Adil has variations and can bat and field well.

Woeful batting again from England, but some brilliant fast bowling from the windies which is good to see.

We need to find a stronger opening partnership than Strauss and Cook, we never seem to set up a platform from these 2. Cook might benifit from dropping to the number 3 spot, but then there isn't another opener in the squad!

Strauss and Cook have made the corridor of uncertainty their natural home, as such they can have a disastrous effect on the top order, Pietersen has to bat like an opener and Freddie ends up playing like the number four they were trying to move him away from.
Utterly useless from England on a pitch that really wasn't as bad as they managed to make it look.

Not permanently dropping him but its obvious that he's a disruptive influence. His batting style maybe of all out attack but he has to learn to adapt his style to the situation of the team. He's thrown his wicket at times when we've been slowly building up a large total. You don't need individual superstars, just talented "team players". If he's dropped temporarily his arrogance may be curbed. He's just one of those players i hate seeing in our national shirt (like john terry).

Don't particularly follow cricket, but I like to watch it now and again. Can someone explain what you mean by batting like an opening/3rd/4th/etc batsman?

Well, generally the first six players on the scorecard, are your best batsmen...these are the ones who should get the majority of the runs. These generally consist of two fairly dull, but gutsy players who try to get the innings off to a good start - your number one and two.

Number three is something of an enigma...could be another dull, but gutsy player (good at the defensive strokes), or it could be someone with a bit more flair. Either way, these either hang around for ages, or are out fairly quickly.

Number four is often the 'star' of the team, with arrogance playing a major part, and often a bit of a tabloid 'darling'. Often rescues the team with some thrilling strokeplay and a cavalier attitude.

Number five has some tendnacies of the number four (but often not quite as skillful or good-looking).

Number six is sometimes a bit of an all-rounder...bats well, bowls well - consequently often injured.

Number seven is the wicket keeper, who is generally a bit lippy and quite short.

Number eight is often a bowler who thinks he can bat a bit (but often can't)

Number nine is often a bowler who is probably a better batsman than number eight, but often gets overlooked because he doesn't have a syndicated column in a quality broadsheet.

Number ten is often the best bowler in the team, sometimes gets into double figures with the bat and provides some late entertainment in the process.

Number eleven is quite often a spin bowler, who has devoted his professional life to perfecting the googly, but has absoulutely no idea how to hold a bat. Often looks a bit frail and is bullied by the opposing fast bowlers.

Unless, we are talking about England, and therefore they are all shite!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks, makes things fairly clear! Asides from getting the good men in first to get you off to a good start, are there any tactical implications in say, varying the 3rd 4th and 5th and the likes?

More often than not it might be one of the openers gets dropped down the order if the team are chasing runs in the second innings and the team needs to score quickly, but it doesn't happen that often.

Cricket should really be a very simple game - score lots of runs, bowl the other team out cheaply and have a nice tea of cucumber sandwiches and fairy cakes...sadly it is often more complex than that!

if your talking about him throwing his wicket at 97, then I dont agree with you. I'd rather players give away their wickets in the 90's rather than fail to make 50's

What an excellent few months of cricket we've had! India winning everything and England and Aussies losing to just about everyone. Hah!

I have this suspicion that nobody really cares about cricket at the moment apart from India.

If spoony was around he'd agree to that I reckon.

That's quite a good summary.

The England part that is.

I think quite a lot of people would be enjoying it. There's a lot of good cricket on show. It's not a case of teams become shit and India being less shit than others. India and South Africa have been very good, IMO. I'm enjoying watching it and the Jerome Taylor spell was great to watch yesterday.

Congtratulations to the Windies. It's about time they started making some waves again. England will come back at them so they have to make sure they keep this level up for the remaining tests.

England have some world class players in their side. But the batting has been abysmal ever since Trescothick turned in to a mentalist. What I don't understand is why they keep selecting the same players who keep failing. Shah and Bapora should be given a run in the side for at least 2 test series over Bell & Collingwood and we need to look at the 2 openers. England have a strong bowling attack and if the pitch is half decent they will get any side out. (That track was a joke!)
For the next match I would play two spinners over 1 of the fast bowlers if the pitch is that slow again.

Swann in for Panesar and Shah in for Bell hopefully. This test match has draw written all over it though unless England get bowled out for 51 again.. useless pricks.

Play abandoned for the day due to the poor state of the pitch.

Rumour that it could be relocated to the old Recreation Ground.

Okay, things are becoming a little clearer now.

A delegation from England have visited and given the green light to relocating the test match to the Recreation Ground in St Johns.

The ICC would like a Sunday start although the TV companies warned that this might not be possible and it may be Monday.

Unfortunately the two upper tiers in the stands at the ground are no longer deemed to be safe for public use but i'm sure we'll all muddle through and it 'll be something to remember for better reasons in the end.
