Well would you look at that my xbox just died

I still think the original price of £425 (Cheaper for the rest of the world, the US version was around £300 at launch), is still excellent value for money.

also anyine know how long it will take for microsoft to send me my replacement? want to sell it as soon as

Anywhere between 2 weeks to 4 weeks usually.. My mate actually had his done in a week though..

Lucky bastard.

That £425 price tag is what me go xbox in the first place.....still atleast now I will be getting an 80gb harddrive instead of 60

also are there any big differences between the 60 and 80gb's? and why was the 60gb taken out of production so quick?

Not too bad, I heard 6 weeks somewhere and thought feck that

It used to be anywhere going up to 2 months, but MS altered their repair service or something as it sped up..

Still not sending mine off yet. lol

60GB aren't in production anymore, the only option you have is a 40GB or, as mentioned, if you wait until the 29th August you can get the new 80GB ones.

And for what you got, £425 was a good price in my opinion.

also are there any big differences between the 60 and 80gb's? and why was the 60gb taken out of production so quick?

The only major difference is the lack of BC for PS2 games. PS1 games will still work. You also have 2 USB ports instead of 4, and you don't have any card readers. You don't get an ethernet cable in the box either, but if you have wireless it doesn't matter.

60GB was taken out of production to reduce costs and so there would just be one model avilable, rather than multiple and confuse the consumer (Something that has benefitted the Wii IMO).

Think there will be a price drop for Christmas? Rumuor has it MS are having another price cut in September (How low can they go?) so I think Sony will have to respond if that is true. £249 for an 80GB PS3 is superb value for money.

Gaming division (SCE) made a slight profit last quarter. PS3 won the HD Disc war, SCE did a huge favour for Sony as a whole, even almost losing the Playstation brand in the process. I think so, it's time for Sony Corp to give something back now. 199 or 249 for christmas, it's time to pick up the ball now.

I'd be very surprised if it went as low as £199 for christmas, perhaps in another year it will be that low, once Blu Ray has become more widely accepted and costs can be cut.

Hopefully Sony won't make the same mistakes with the PS4 as they have done with the PS3, I think their difficulties this generation has been a benefit to them.

Competition is good!

There are no mistakes to make with PS4, it's all done. Expect it to launch at 250.

Why not 199? As I said, Sony Corp used PS3 to get rid of HD-DVD. You can now find stand alone BD players at a lower price than PS3. Waiting for Blu-ray almost destroyed the Playstation brand. I really think that if it was not for the BD drive, PS3 would have been far more powerful and launched at the same time as XB360. XB360 would be dead, but HD-DVD would have won. It's now time for Sony as a whole to really push this system (it is a lovely little box) - lose a bit of cash, push it like hell, and then give me one in a seperates case.

I wonder how many people stay xbox hwen they get the rrod. would be interesting to see some sort of percentage

Some people have had 8+ but still stay with it. It does have some very good games. Still it's odd how people still stick with it. Certain models of PS3 do have problems due to the BD drive, I think that is sorted now however, but PS3 failure rates have never gone above 4%.

The PS3 was launched, marketed and priced very poorly. I think though that has been a good experience for Sony, they have dominated the games industry since 1994. When they release the PS4 they need to market it much better than they did with the PS3, tell the consumers what it has and what it does! The PS3 couldn't even output 1080p at launch yet was hailed as a HD gaming console! They need to have all the features promised at launch, with a good line-up of games. Like you mention though, all the R&D is done, Blu Ray has won (They've managed a 400GB disc now haven't they?) and they are advancing the CELL, so PS4 should have a much smoother ride than the PS3 is having.

I understand your point, I think it just makes more sense for them to stimulate sales with a £50 drop, then with another £50 cut in 8-12 months. I don't think the PS Brand would have been 'destroyed' per se. They have an unbelievably loyal following in Europe (Sometimes I ask why, with the way we get treated by SCEE) and it would take a lot for that to break. I have no doubts if PS3 and 360 were released at the same time the PS3 would be ahead in overall sales, but being ony 5m or so units behind after launching a year afterwards shows the continued strength of the PS Brand.

I agree with your sentiments regarding pushing the PS3, whether Sony are prepared to take that gamble (Particularly with their recent financial figures) is anyone's guess.

Wait a mo here, it could always output 1080p from launch. I t might have not done certain things, but some launch games, and all BD movies were 1080p. The problem was, how do you market a box at $600 that cost you almost $900 to make? This was the problem. As I said, BD will be the feature in the longer term, but I'm also sure that Kutaragi never had it in the original design or costing of the console. I think that it was in his mind to go live before XB360 and have a beter GPU than RSX is. Do not believe the XB360 fanboy hype over Xenos however, RSX is a monster on its own, it's quite capable. Never believe the figures they give you for Xenos, it would produce a black screen. Spoony knows this, Xenos is far better than RSX at producing a black screen.

Yes, a lot of the money for PS3 was plied into Cell, and it's a very interesting processor, because it's the only one of those currently available that scales in an almost linear fashion with parallel processing tasks, yet also does this at very low power consumption. Cell isn't the best for parallel computing tasks or any other tasks, however it is the most scalable of all current designs. For PS4, they have Cell2, BD is done (and that was the most expensive component), all you need is a new GPU, and now they have the cash to get the very best for PS4 if it is a physical system.

If PS3 had been released at the same time as XB360 and a similar price, then XB360 would now be dead. They took a massive gamble for Blu-ray. The Playstation 2 kept them afloat for a lonf time while they dithered over what type of TV to make once the mighty Trinitron was obviously about to go out of the window. What a TV though, the WEGA Trinitrons are something else, the picture quality is still unsurpassed, even with higher resolutions. CRTs are wonderful.

I digress, it's time now that the gaming division was supported by the electronics division and make this box mass market. It's time to say, Wii, look at your arse.

I'm getting confused. I meant it couldn't upscale games/DVD's to 1080p until a firmware update was introduced. Regardless this is a feature that should have been there from the start, even more so when you consider the fact that it was delayed a year. I don't think I have even seen an advertisement televised on the TV saying what the PS3 is, what it can do, the benefits of Cell, Blu Ray etc. The average consumer doesn't know what it means, hell I wouldn't have a clue on half the features the PS3 has if I didn't read up on it. Sony relied too much on their PSX and PS2 success and thought the PS3 would have similar success (Which in time I think it will do). I don't understand all this RSX or Xenos stuff, so I can't comment on any of it!

How much will Cell2 cost though? Is most of the development work done on it?

Never heard of a Triniton!!

Give it 5 years and it will be;)

No, it didn't do things like DVD upscaling (all done by Cell) because it wasn't ready. Microsoft caught them on the hop, BD was not possible to manufacture at decent yeild. PS3 was rushed out of the door unfortunately. Kutaragi was sacked, but he should never have ben given control over consumer electronics. It was he however that turned Sony Electonics around. Bravia was his deal. However, he should have stayed with Playstation.

How much will Cell2 cost though? Is most of the development work done on it?

Cell 2 will cost nothing. IBM are already doing it for themselves. Sony paid for the intial R&D, it's now in IBM's hands. IBM has great hope for this processor, it's here to stay.

Never heard of a Triniton!!

Blah!

Give it 1 and a half. All that is needed is the price drop now, to 199.

All I'm saying is the PS3 should have been a better machine than it was at launch, particularly when you factor in it was delayed a year. I'm happy with where it is at now though, and where it is going.

I don't think it can turn around a 15m console deficit in a year and a half!

Not that I can remember Weaste, I think we had Sharp TV's. Never broke down, things were built to last back then!

I still have my grandads black and white TV, he must have bought it in the early to mid 50's, still works today!*

*Not today as in the 12th August, because I haven't checked, but you know what I mean.

still very very glad that I got the 60gb version, card reader is an excellent addition

But I only have 1 ps2 game that I can play

My xbox has failed twice and my mates 3 times. Last time my mate shipped his back he got it returned in about 2 days time so the failure rate/amount getting sent for repair is going down.

You could probably read up on how to fix it yourself, its something to do with the solder. One of my mates lefth is on with a towel rapped around it and it heated up enough to resolder back together. You will void the warranty but after 1 year only the red rings is covered anyway.

Still not sending mine off yet. lol

Mine took a week between collection and delivery. My mates took 3 feckin days. THey gave me free xbox live for 3 motnsh and a free xbox fascia- they gave some lad at work a brand new 360. His 360 was about a year and a hald old, sent it off with the 3 red lights and got it back a week later only to discover it was a brand new model with HDMI ports. Lucky cnut.
