We can still start a back 4 that played under Ole’s first season.

Wasn’t that under Woodward though? A guy that signed fellaini because we failed on Thiago.
Woodward may have been partly responsible for the "galactico" signings - Pogba etc. but I don't think I've ever heard any of our managers claim that signings were made without their go ahead. The whole recruitment operation was shambles.

I very much doubt Woodward knew who Lindelof was. And Moyes identified his favourite ex-players in Baines and Fellaini that he wanted to bring with him, that signing is all on Moyes. Though us letting Fellaini's release clause expire and then signing him a few weeks after for a much higher fee still might be the biggest display of incompetence I've ever seen.

This is why I'm still going to struggle to evaluate ETH when we have a challenging start to the season. The schedule is brutal, and he's going in with exactly the same issues (no LB, no CF, Maguire/Lindelof/AWB) that hamstrung us last season.

Why would we expect anything to be different, with the same players, who are just one year older and slower?

You have to question the wisdom of signing a 5ft10 CB and a 5ft7 LB. Are they suited for the EPL physical game? Unfortunately we seem to double down on the eredivisie route with de ligt and mazraoui despite both being injury prone

But they have been replaced except Dalot and Shaw who everyone still thinks are class.

-------------Onana----
Dalot----Yoro----Martinez---Shaw

is very different to

-------------De Gea
WB---Maguire---Lindelof----Shaw

Add Malacia and maybe De Ligt/Mazraoui and that's a lot of change. We need to stop making excuses and just get on with actually playing well

I'd be concerned if we're intending to go into this season with an 18 year old centreback as first choice.

I mean we where never going to rejuvenate the squad in 1 summer after what 15 years of bad recruitment ( id argue the rot started before fergie left) we simply don't have that amount of money.

We have gone out and bought a Striker and some one who seems to be considered to be the best young center back in Europe (yes its sad he got injured but these things happen). We have engaged with other clubs to get options incase we manage to raise more funds/reduce the current massive squad size. Not sure what else you expected?
I’m sorry but I think you’re just letting the club off. We generate huge revenue, and there were plenty of explanations out there of how we CAN afford to spend.
Barcelona and Chelsea have managed it, so why can’t we?
As Rangnick said a few years ago, we need ‘open heart surgery’ on the squad.
We just finished 8th.
I’m not expecting 7 or 8 first team players, but 1 or 2 (starting midfielder and centre back) should be the bare minimum.
We’re trying to catch up not stagnate.

Offers have been made for some of our players, if it means we can get a midfielder in for game 1, for the sake of a few million, just get it done.
