WC All Stars Chain Draft Round 1- green_smiley vs harms

Who will win based solely on WC performances?

Alves has never played as RB in WC 2010, so I don't think it is fair to play him in that position here, as tempted as I was. He is fine here because he does not do all the heavy work and will be very supportive at right side of midfield, playing one-two, offer physical presence and help to track back

It was me, probably? But it was about Marcelo first and foremost, should've worded it better. I don't think that Ramos is final-worthy, but he is good enough to feature in this draft, no doubts about that

No I was thinking of IDM there. But Marcelo is another good example of what I meant to Gio. Marcelo was in the team of the tournament in 2014 and IMO put in some good matches before the 7-1. But people only remember the 7-1. For Ramos and the ratings, you said he isn't final worthy to you, yet based on the official "performance index" Ramos is probably the highest rated WC RB of all time. So that's why we have to take things like awards and ratings as not the final answer.

On Veron (and I don't want to say more because I think its sounding unfair when I am not also criticizing Alves), I watched your video against Holland and I'll concede your point about the quality of his Cup on the ball, but it also reinforced my objections about him in the role you have him in a diamond with Pirlo and Charlton.

SILVIO PIOLA (1938)

France 1938 Piola, the silent killer

The 1930s were dominated by Italian football. Italy won the 1934 World Cup title at home, two years later they won the Olympic gold in Berlin and in 1938, they side successfully defended the World Cup title in France. Each of the winning team had an outstanding player: in 1934 it was Guiseppe Meazza, in 1936 Ugo Frossi, and 1938 was marked by Silvio Piola.

Piola made history with his performances at the 1938 World Cup. After two goals in the quarterfinals against the hosts, France (3-1), the French media baptised him 'Executioner of French'. In the final, Piola scored the goal to go ahead 2-1 and then the last in the 4-2 triumph over Hungary. The Hungarian international Pal Titkos later described his impressions of the final: “Silvio Piola had a fantastic physique and constantly overran his opponents. He was a man of great versatility and a centre forward without fear. He exploited any opportunity for shooting on goal.

Piola was discovered as a youth by a football-enthusiast priest, Don Sassi, who was immediately impressed by the 1.78m, 77kg player because of his intrepid nature, his speed, and his jumping and shooting power. A good grasp of the game and quick reflexes in front of the opposing goal made Piola an outstandingly promising talent.

On March 24, 1935, Piola made his debut for the national team in Vienna. Italy defeated Austria 2-0. Piola stood in for Giuseppe Meazza and scored both goals. At the 1938 FIFA World Cup, he not only finished the second highest scorer with a tally of five goals, he was also elected the best player of the tournament. Piola, who scored two and assisted in one of the altogether four goals in the final in Paris, played his last international match as captain of the 'Squadra Azzurra' against England (1-1) in Florence on May 18, 1952. He earned 34 caps and scored 30 goals.

ALCIDES GHIGGIA (1950)

Right-winger on the team which won the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, Uruguay's Alcides Ghiggia was the scorer of one of the most famous goals in the history of football. It was his strike which sealed that famous triumph for Uruguay, a defining moment in the game in both his own country and in Brazil. He also enjoyed a long club career in Italy, the land of his ancestry, during which team he made several appearances for the Italian national team.

In that final group Ghiggia's goals were instrumental in keeping Uruguay in contention for the title. He opened the scoring in the first game against Spain, which ultimately finished in a 2-2 draw, before getting Uruguay's first equaliser against Sweden in a match were they came from behind twice to win 3-2. That set up a decider against Brazil, which the hosts needed only to draw to become champions but Uruguay had to win. The match, played in front of nearly 200,000 people, would prove to be one of the most famous ever played.

Brazil dominated the first half and took the lead early in the second, but from there Ghiggia took over. Midway through the second half he got possession on the right wing, ran into the penalty area and squared the ball for Juan Schiaffino, who scored the equaliser. Thirteen minutes later, Ghiggia burst into the box again and with Brazilian goalkeeper Moacir Barbosa expecting another cross, found a gap at the near post to put Uruguay 2-1 ahead. There was no way back for Brazil and the match ended in silence, with shocked Brazilian fans in tears. It remains both one of their most famous defeats and Uruguay's most famous win. Ghiggia was the first player to score in every game for a World Cup winning team, a feat since matched only by Jairzinho.

He later gave the iconic quote: "Only three people in history have managed to silence the Maracana with a single gesture: the Pope, Frank Sinatra and me."

Glimpse of Ghiggia's skill in WC'50 final against Brazil

Sergi Ramos was the highest "rated" player in the 2010 World Cup for instance yet you only called him "tidy and solid" while others still said he was "unconvincing".

Just to clarify on this part.
I was unconvinced on him as a RB in general. The same way I am unconvinced about Pique as a CB.
Outside of the Spain system, they will be caught out more often is what I meant. I am not sure if that is a valid argument outside the draft context, but I am not a fan of being that static.
To be fair, Capdevilla would have been a convincing pick as well based on that tournament and team if we look at it that way although he was not the 'highest rated player'

Anyways, won't derail the thread anymore. Thought I should clarify why I said that about Ramos. Cheers :)

When the Guardian compiled the list of the best big game goalscorers of all-time, 3 of my players were in top-20 (Müller, unsurprisingly, usurping the first place, Kempes 9th and Charlton 19th). No player of green_smiley’s was in top-50.

But this is WC specific draft, and list here consists of goals from various tournaments (Euro, Copa America, European Cup, etc)

I might as well mention that Piola is the highest goalscorer in Italian first league history, with 290 goals (274 in Serie A and 16 in Divisione Nazionale)

Voted GS. I don't see Maradona being contained and having a meh team behind hasn't really stopped him from shining.

GS should swap alves and Andrade .

That is the thing that tilted my voted towards harms.

That midfield might need to be sorted out but the rest of the team is sound.

An equally challenging effort from GS too IMO but Andrade and Alves in position makes it a much better case.

Alves has never played as RB in WC 2010, so I don't think it is fair to play him in that position here

He is fully capable of playing there though and was available to be picked for playing there in case Brazil needed him. That is enough to choose him there IMO.
Basides, he was playing a RM and this current game he wouldn't have had any left winger in his face all the time.
So wouldn't have been too unfait to use him as a wing back. I fact, don't think a defensive RB is needed.

Andrade in midfield on the other hand makes the Veron-Charlton-Pirlo midfield more tough to operate considering what I have read on him in the past as a energetic defensive B2B.
The swap would have won my vote. Cheers :)

Maybe, but in context of WC 2010, Alves played 5 times as right-sided midfielder, twice as sub in 2 opening matches, followed by 3 other games as starter (against Portugal, Chile, Netherlands)

As for Andrade, at 29 years old (1930 WC) he was no longer at his peak. He still had the skill, but his physical has dropped quite significantly (due to illness). Playing him at midfield wouldn't make much sense, and it is not clear-cut to compare older days' half right position with today's modern formation. I would say either DM or RB is close enough to represent, and in this case RB suits him better

There is a difference between a 424 and what you are playing. Besides Didi was pretty much an all action midfielder. It wasn't as if Zito took on someone like Kopa on his own in 58 WC. In any case Zito is not the problem here at all. I seriously don't get the point of Veron and Pirlo in the same midfield here.
I would say that this is midfield dilemma that harms is facing

We have same numbers of players in midfield, but harms' midfield is lacking in defensive quality, which is very much needed against Maradona, even more so with the likes of Alves, Davids and Popescu providing a very solid platform to allow Maradona to run riot

Taking out 1 midfielder from harms in place of Conti would make it even worse

Yeah, but it illustrates their World Cup performances as well.

Müller, Kempes (2) and Zito — scored the winning goals in WC finals
Charlton (2), Müller (3 in 2) — in the semi-finals; Kempes also scored 2 but there were no semi-finals, just the last game of the group stage
Branco — a penalty against France in 1986 that should've won them the game (Zico missed); earned and scored from the free kick against Netherlands in 1994

Piola - scored 2 goals in 1938 WC final against Hungary
Maradona - assisted Burruchaga for the winning goal against West Germany in 1986 WC final
Ghiggia - 1 assist + winning goal against Brazil in 1950 WC final

But World Soccer had him in their Team of the Tournament alongside Davids, Zidane and Rivaldo in midfield (which I'd broadly agree with). L'Equipe had him as the 5th highest rated player of the tournament and, given their home bias, more tellingly the 2nd highest rated non-French player on show.
Can you send me the links to those if you have them? Cheers

Thanks for the game @green_smiley
It was good to see the likes of Piola, Ghiggia and Andrade even though they are so difficult to judge due to the lack of footage.
