WC All Stars Draft

Prelim Rules

Eligible players, WC Edition Pick and Squad Rules

- Any player who appeared on the pitch in minimum of 3 world cup matches from WC 1930 to 2014.
- In any match line up it must be mentioned explicitly on the formation graphic itself the WC edition of the said player's peak. Only performances across that WC should be taken into account while voting. Any formation graphic without the year would be rejected. (For example - You have to mention "Maradona 86" instead of just "Maradona" on formation.
- Initial squad of 12 players, subsequent reinforcement picks will be added to the squad.
- Even if one picks Player A for a particular year during picking round, the pick year can be changed subsequently at any time during the draft as long as the restriction rules around playing 11 are followed.

Restrictions for first 11 on the pitch

Restrictions for individual managers will be decided after the position bidding.

- Maximum of 5-7 players from one continent. Continent boundaries to be clarified later.
- Maximum of 5-7 WC winners (WC win would be counted only for the year player is representing. That is you can play Maradona 1990 and he won't count as a winner)
- Maximum of 1 players from a single world cup on the pitch. (any number can be in the squad)

Picking rules

- Snake draft rules that is 1-16, 16-1, 1-16.. and so on till 12 picks.
- The picks from individual managers have to be in chain style jumping from one WC edition to another.
Example :
Crappy - picks - Player A (1970), Player B (1974), Player C (1978).... ..... Player K (2010), Player L (2014)

- A manager can break the chain a maximum of 0-3 times depending on their bid.

Example:
Crappy - picks - Player A (2002), Player B (2006).. BREAK .. Player C (1962) .. Player D (1966) ..

- A manager can trade more breaks for their first picked players. For example for buying first break, return your first picked player who will be blocked for the draft from then on. For second additional break return second picked player. A player may be forced to trade if he is not able to complete his squad at any time.

Reinforcement round pick rules

- First reinforcement round for 2 picks will follow the reverse order in the following format.
  • First pick in reverse snake order that is 8 to 1. In this round any unpicked eligible player can be picked. In subsequent rounds only previously picked players can be picked.
  • 1 to 8 snake order
- Second reinforcement round for 2 picks will be sheep draft pick style where a person can submit 2 picks and 1 block across 3 rounds. A person can not repeat an unsuccessful pick in any round. A player blocked once by a manager can not be used for a block again. So essentially every player can only be picked and blocked once each by a manager. Once a manager has successfully picked his players, he can not pick or block again.
- Third reinforcement for 1 pick round will follow the similar sheep draft format except with one pick and one block for 2 rounds.

Position Bidding

Essentially everyone is bidding for the first place.

Following restrictions are in play for bids

  • Breaks - 0 to 3.
  • Winners allowed in team - 5 to 7
  • Maximum players from one continent - 5 to 7.

So every one will PM me their "bid" to get the first place in the draft in the following form -
Breaks - 2
Winners in team - 6
Maximum players from one continent - 7
Everyone has to submit a bid.

Evaluation process -
  • The best bid to get the first place is one with the lowest sum of 3 numbers, that is one with the least breaks and heavier restrictions (lesser numbers of winners and players from one continent allowed).
  • If there is a tie in the sum then it will be resolved as follows
    • Manager who bid lower breaks would win
    • If number of breaks are same then the manager who bed less number of players from one continent would win
    • If even that is same then we would randomise amongst the managers involved.

All bids will be final which means whatever you choose will be your restricitions throughout the draft. (Breaks only relevant for initial drafting)

(I am scrapping 13th round as a result of this process. Rules updated in OP)

finally! all we need now is to ban the overachievers from the previous draft...

1. Are World Cups looped? When someone picks a player from 2014, his next one would be from 1930?
2. Can the chain go backwards (from the very beginning, obviously no switches later)?

It can go backwards. Looping one is an interesting point. Let me ponder. I was close to going with 2 breaks but went with 1 so this may be good way to mitigate the same.

Just realised. I’m tired and just stupid in general! I’ll still end up in the bottom half though.

feck. Those op 'rules' just ruin my mood. Anyone want to take my place? Go head.

Needs changing to 13 in OP. I know it's copied and pasted or whatever, but stops confusion later on.

Also another point to clarify, we're not having differing versions of the same player allowed?

E.G someone picks Madonna 86 and another picks Madonna 90.

No you can’t pick same player again

I have a potential scenario that needs clarifying.

Let’s say we’re in the later stages of the draft and I’ve already picked a player from the 1974 WC. The chain comes back around to me at 1974 but I have no room for anymore squad players and no breaks left. What happens then?

Surely the chain continues with the next WC you need to pick from.

For example you have picked players from 1974 and 1978 WC's if the chain comes back to you at 1974 WC you would need to pick from 1982 and so forth.

That would make sense but it isn’t mentioned in the OP so I just wanted to check. Need to plan for every outcome.

The chain is only for yourself, right? Say your 1st pick from 1974 WC and when it's your turn for 2nd pick, you pick from 1978 WC.
All other have their own personal chain based on where they choose to start.

@crappycraperson for 1st reinforcement, does the loop continue? Say I finish at 2010 WC, then during my 1st reinforcement, am I obligated to pick from 2014 WC?

I still don't get the point/value addition behind the chain.
The more I plan for this draft the more I agree with this. The max continent/WC winner rule is good but this one feels unnecessary.

It adds a level of strategy as we progress down the list, to cut people off, or do our own thing?

Must've missed that. I thought you guys were supposed to follow one chain and each would have the opportunity to break it once.

Interesting either way

@crappycraperson can you clarify?

The chain is individual specific right? Not like Manager A picks 74WC and Manager B has to pick from 78 WC?
And confirm above query on reinforcement.

How chain will work is already mentioned in the rules with examples. How hard is to decipher? It is manager specific and not order specific.

Reinforcements won't follow any chain. Their picking rules are separate

Do we PM you our starting position?

If this is the case it needs to be done before the picking order to add a degree of challenge.

Do you go for the WC with an absolute star, or do you go for the WC with numerous big players to give you a better chance if you are down the bottom of the picking order.

Yeah.. If we can pick whenever then those at the bottom might get an advantage as they can pick a chain with the best possibility of avoiding other managers interfering with their chain
