Wayne Rooney: Manchester United All Time Top Goalscorer

He is a legend, but will never be remembered as fondly as many others due to the contract debacles, flirting with other clubs etc.

Right now though the biggest contribution he could give to us moving forward would be accepting to move to China for some obscene amount like £50m. Time has come to part ways, and if he hardly can get a game now then it will be even harder for him after Jose and Woodie has muppeted it out on the market in the summer.

Redcafe is the definition of stupid fans. He already was a legend.

A poll to decide whether our all time goal scorer is a legend or not? are you people not ashamed at all? I hope no mod is standing behind this idea.
Makes it all the more interesting to see where Red Cafe stands on the issue now IMO ;)

Sir Alex Ferguson, who bought Rooney from Everton: "It is no mean feat to score so many goals, and he breaks a record that has stood for over 40 years.

"Wayne thoroughly deserves his place in the history books of this great club and I am sure that he will go on to score many more goals.

Sir Bobby said:
"We have had some incredible strikers here at Old Trafford and they have scored a lot of goals, but it has been fairly obvious for a while now that Wayne Rooney was going to be the one likeliest to break my record, and now that day has come, I would be lying to say that I'm not disappointed to have lost the record. However, I can honestly say that I'm delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books.

"He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England. It has been great to watch him every week since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2004; he set the tone with a wonderful hat-trick on his debut and he has thrilled us all in the years since, going on to enjoy a hugely successful career.

"I was 35 when I retired. Wayne is only 31 and still going strong, so I don't think he's done by a long stretch yet."

Mourinho said: "It's the record of the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world.

"It's a record that belonged, before him, to an amazing legend of English football so Wayne becomes definitely a legend at Manchester United."

..

Shame how it's one rule for one, and one for another.

Ronaldo is adored by our fans after continuously flirting with Madrid.

Contract wanker twice, so he's not a legend to me, but respect to him for the achievement.

Totally moronic standpoint given the amount of people who have done the same, or done the same then also left who I'm sure you could call legend or bear no ill will.

Great goal, glad he's got the record, happy for him.

Still won't forgive him for flirting with city though

Is George Best a legend for you?

Very different looking back on a time I never lived, so the feelings aren't there.

Different situation. George played in a side that stagnated after European success. Rooney and Ronaldo were winning trophies. He had obviously as we all know demons to cope with.

You are unaware of how George treated the club then?

I would be interested to know your opinion on Pogba and Ronaldo. They did not threaten to leave... they actually left! And we have spend 90 million to bring Pogba back, more than Rooney's wages for many years.

Pogba left because of lack of playing time, not over money.
Ronaldo left to fulfill a boyhood dream, do you think Rooney flirted with City to fulfil a boyhood dream?

I see it posted so often on here. But i've always wondered how exactly did he flirt with City?

At one point I did wonder how I would feel when Rooney surpassed Charlton (who is I think the greatest player in the club's history). Rooney certainly wouldn't be one of my favourites.....

As it happens I was delighted. It helped that it was a great goal, one that harked back to the talent that saw him become one of the most notable players of his generation.

Any time someone becomes a club's leading goalscorer is a great moment. I've been a critic of Rooney but on today of all days he deserves a massive amount of respect. A great servant to the club and a hero to many.

He will eventually. George Best missed games to spend time with women, failed to turn up to training in order to party, got arrested and left in his mid 20s.
Cantona had to be talked out of leaving halfway through his suspension.
Law ended up at City.
Ronaldo openly flirted with Madrid minutes after we won the Champions League.
Rio got booed by our own fans after refusing to sign a contract.

Rooney will be remembered extremely fondly in a few years.

He was also caught having a meeting with Kenyon in a London restaurant. But you don't hear much about him flirting with Chelsea, even though theres reasonable proof he actually did.

It's not even the contract negotiations he pulled. Name me one elite player, whose not a homegrown product of said club, who never considered leaving? Zanetti maybe? Even Paddy Evra left the club. The only valid reason for Rooney not to be seen as a legend is his deep in performances over the last 2-3 years. His decline arguably started even as early as when he should've been in his prime years.

I do think he's a United legend, mind you.

United Legend. Legacy tarnished from what he did before but take nothing away from him for breaking the record.

It will take a monumental effort for someone to even come near it. Rashford has a chance if he stays long enough.

Honestly didn't want him to break the record, but credit where it's due. Congrats Wayne.

Possibly my least favourite word ever, but he is a club 'legend'.

He is one of our best players ever. Arguably our best striker (talent wise maybe not in the top 3). You can argue for him making a United all time 11 solely on the fact he is our highest goalscorer. I can't be arsed going through ins and out why he is so good and comparing him to other strikers but quite simply I have never seen a player at United who has made me shake my head in disbelief more than Rooney - he has scored more screamers than anyone at United imo.

He's won everything with us and has stayed with us through good and bad times even if his head was turned alot - by other clubs and Paul Stretford (typical £££ agent). He's matured to the point now where it's hard to remember the young Wayne who was hot headed and always seemed a scouser at heart, United player for the money.

By now, it seems that he is fully one of ours. He does the love the club and I'm sure deep down he would be unhappy to read some of the negativity posted on here.

It's just a shame that the past - contract debacles, spats with managers and tabloid headlines (is that another reason why people don't like him? Even though the English media targeted him as he was 'Goldenboy') - cannot be forgotten or put to bed. He is our all time goalscorer and has always played with the same passion.
Cut the man a bit of slack and just congratulate him without an extra 'but' added.

Congrats to Wayne. Legend. He gave his all for this club. He is not the most gifted/silky striker out there, but he was a real tireless machine and though his legs are gone now, I am absolutely delighted to have witnessed the Wayne Rooney era. What a player in his prime, hope his swan's song will also be wonderful.
