Was this the best world cup ever?

Best final ever

Not so sure about the best WC,but probably somewhere around top 3

To the league football purists, you just dont get this level of drama in your brighton v aston villa every sunday afternoon. Different kind of tournament after all, we agree that probably the tactical quality is superior in teams that play and glue together for a whole season, but to many of us it doesn't make up for the tension you get to live every four years. But yeah this is a recurring topic among many british fans and it will not change with this awesome WC apparently

The Final was the best at least from those I watched since 1990, but on quality overall during the tournament, 1994, 1998, 2006, 2014 were better tournaments, more top teams and quality matches during knockout games, but certainly better than 1990, 2002, 2010, and with that Final it beated 2018.

The level of quality was pretty shocking, England v France and the final. The rest was high on drama , low on quality. Top 6 in England would beat the majority of that dross. International football has slumped in the last few years. I just didn't think the games were of a high standard. The host nation was a joke, there crowd and team added absolutely nothing. You always like to see the home nation go far, see the energy spread in to the tournament. I tried to get in to it but couldn't wait to it ended, looking forward to watching United again.

Whatever you’re into, United last season were worse to watch than any team in the last 16 of this year’s World Cup and they still finished 6th in the PL. Enjoy coming back to watch City win the league by 10 points I suppose because the ‘quality’ is better.

Yeah I feel the same. Surprises are all great for the neutrals, but inevitable the wheels coming off later - Crotia and Marocco both made for not so great semifinals. I thin spain vs Portugal, and the winner against France would have been more interesting OR THE NEUTRAL. Same for BRazil vs Argentina on the other side.
But Morocco and Croatia deserved this of course and it was great fun seeing Spain and Portugal getting knocked out by Marocco but I'm still a fan of the "big" nations clashing (and as you can see, France vs England, ARG - NED and ARG - FRA ere the best knockout games because they all play football and not parking the bus all the time)
Yeah with the utmost of respect to those 2 nations - and they deserved to be there, especially Croatia as they’ve been over achieving massively for a while now….there’s always the feeling of inevitability around the “surprise” packages that at some point it’ll be a step too far for them and it would diminish the spectacle as a contest, which made the semi finals a little less spectacular this year. But that’s football. I think it’s very rare where there are tournaments without upsets and the “predicted 4/6” make it all the way through to the semi finals etc.

Oh well. Fantastic final though. We couldn’t ask for more. And in the words of Drury “thank you. Just thank you, to both teams”.

The quality from Asian and African countries probably just the same so it's the Americans and Europeans.
Saudi (exc 1994) and Iran always shit, S. Korea, Australia, and Japan sometimes good sometimes shit.
We once also had China and North Korea.

Was it the best WC? Yes for me

Why do people blame Morocco and Croatia for the semi-finals being one-sided/not a great watch when in 2014 they were equally matched and:

Game 1 was 7-1, the biggest thrashing I’ve ever seen.
Game 2 was 0-0 and one of the worst World Cup games ever.

Argentina and France were arguably the best two teams and would have won anyway no matter who they played. Morocco gave it a good go against France too. Croatia underwhelmed but there were some great goals for Argentina in them.

The final the best ever for me. Only better 1999 CL final and 2008 subjectively. Liverpool 2006 was quite insane, but we all hated that.

My ranking:
2006 is by far the best
Argentina vs Germany
France vs Brazil
Italy vs Germany
Italy vs France
are all classics, with Italy vs Germany being the best semi final and Argentina vs Germany being the best quarter final since 2002. Italy vs France, second best final since 2002 as well (I was too young to remember 1998)

2014 has excellent group stage and round of 16, but anything after that was OK to shit.
2018 is great overall but no match stood out, perhaps France vs Argentina.
2022 France vs Argentina is the best football match I have seen in my life. Seriously nothing comes close. Manchester City vs Tottenham second leg UCL, AC Milan vs Liverpool are joint second (maybe I have not seen much football matches? I didnt watch many matches from 2010 to 2017 or so, just regained interest the last few years). Netherland vs Argentine is a classic. England vs France is good. Croatia vs Brazil, is ok. Anything else is pure garbage except for like 3-4 matches in the group stage.
I would put 2014 2018 2022 around the same level, but 2022 edges due to the final.

2010 is a bad one.

10 tiers below

2002 - total trash. There is not a single memorable match in that tournament save for England vs Brazil. Known for some of the most corrupt officiatings.

I'm chatting about the standard of football, doesn't mean I have to enjoy who wins the competition. Typical red cafe, one opinion rules eh
