Television Was the ending to Lost really THAT bad? | Yes

Decent ending but left a few too many unanswered questions for me but enjoyed it more the 2nd time I binged on Lost.

The Constant episode though is my favourite episode of TV I have ever seen.

Lost was an unusual show because a lot of the hardcore fans would discuss the plot and mystery between episodes. It was pretty hardcore back then, lots of screenshotting and working shit out on forums. They also added a reality game during seasons which people played on the internet. When you provide fans with that level of complexity and they threw out a half assed ending, then expect the fans to be insulted by it.

I remember in the early seasons in particular the producers and writers would frequently release interviews stating that the show would make sense and the common theory behind the show wasn't correct. They lied. Whoops.

I do appreciate the character arcs in the show though and the initial mystery was amazing. When Lost was good, it was exceptional. Just faded near the end as the writers struggled to make sense of it all. They fell into the trap of dragging the show out for too long because it was so successful.
Thanks for a detailed post. That sounds like something I would enjoy for the most part.

They are talking specifically about the “flash sideways”. The idea that has gone around that they have been in purgatory all along is clearly nonsense.

I don't think thats the case at all and if that was the case then it was clearly a failure by the producers and writers with the final season. Either way, it bombed hard. Very poor final season, I remember absolutely hating the final episode and haven't watched a single minute of Lost since. They're lucky twitter wasn't a big thing back then, otherwise they'd probably have got the same hate D&D got tbh.

There are a few things that are kind of forgotten about and with a show as convoluted as it made itself, it struggled to get out of a few holes. I loved it though. It’s all about the characters really and I think the ending was nice.
Cheers. I think I may finally give it a go after I finish rewatching The Sopranos.

Let's be honest, people (a lot) guessed where they were going near the end of s1
The writers denied it but they clearly changed it based on that. They were then making things up that they couldn't keep control off

It got away from them and they had to do the sideways storyline which included elements of what was originally there

The journey and guessing was so good though. The destination however...

I did laugh at Christian shepherd and Kate in the show making mention of how obvious it was

Season 2 became crap when they mainly focused on Kate Jack and Sawyer and went away from them trying to leave the island for a huge portion of it. Then when it became more focused it was fun.

I think this was the first show where I watched the finale live rather than waiting the next day (woke up around 4 or 5am I remember)

I'm tempted to watch again knowing the ending but also don't feel like it unless I have absolutely nothing else to do

I've never seen the show. I've always been put off by people saying the ending is done horribly. Is it worth watching?
I enjoyed it but as others said, it gets progressively worse and the ending is obvious and the final season is not satisfying as it doesn't answer the mysteries set in the first few sessions.

But get ready to hear a lot of the lead character breathing heavy. Once I noticed that it became so off-putting.

When I first saw it I hated the ending, and the last couple of seasons when I just seemed to have no idea what it was doing. Ok, maybe the final episode isn't that great but the final shot is, if that makes sense.
I will give it a go then. Nothing could be as bad as GoT right?

It's a really cool show, just be prepared for a very disappointing ending, you may actually like the ending if your expectations are incredibly low tbh.
Maybe with the benefit of foresight and low expectations, it will be much more palatable then.

That’s just a view of the afterlife, they clearly were not in purgatory on the island all along as many people seemed to infer.
Ah, yeah. Those folk are wrong.
I will give it a go then. Nothing could be as bad as GoT right?
It's not as bad as GoT, just don't expect answers to every question the show raises!

Lost seemed like the worst (although i maintain its a fun episode as a standalone but for the way the show and series went it was like... Is that it?)

Dexter came along and took the title and probably shared it with HIMYM
GoT defo has the crown now

Of course it is the case! In the episode they take great pains to point this out!

Well I kind of like it like that unless writers unintentionally left like that.

I hated the Sopranos ending for such a long time.
Looking back though it was inspired.

GoT broke my heart. The last 2 season make me physically ill. Just the time hopping and lack of any substance. The show dove off cliff.

I don't think this show ever reaches the heights of GoT so the fall isn't as noticeable

I think binge watching this may make some of the worse episodes better cos you aren't dwelling on them

I can honestly say most of the island’s mysteries are answered or hinted at.

The problem is for Lost:

A) the show is clearly quite spiritual and sci-fi. It was like this from the start but clearly not as prominent. When it went this way, some people felt short changed.

B) They answered the questions. The answers to the question involved some kind of sci-fi answer so people wanted that explained.

In terms of controversial endings:

Sopranos - a phenomenal ending
Lost - very good
Battle star Galactica - awful
Game of Thrones - abysmal.

For me the difference is that in Lost the characters never stop being themselves just to service some plot device, and even if it gets a bit batshit crazy the writers seem to have a conviction with their storytelling that's missing from Game of "feck It, Just Make Her Go Crazy".

See this is what I find concerning. Satisfactory ending is what I ultimately crave. Is it as bad as people are claiming it to be?
The first few seasons seem more interesting than they are. The quality of writing, characters and acting remains pretty consistent, its just not a satisfying show. Worth watching all the same, just dont be fooled into thinking it has anything to say.

I absolutely hate plot armour and hate it even further when the character has served their purpose and is expendable. Like you say, feck it, ill completely do something out of character to get myself killed.

Yeah I've been sleeping on it for ages so I will binge watch it and certainly offer my opinion in this thread.

LOST is the greatest show of all time and the ending was just fine!

Lost will always sit as my all time favourite. Probably a lot due to it being the first series I every properly watched.
That being said, Prison Break season 1 is the best season of anything I've watched.

Lost was great, filled with mystery and kept me guessing. By the last season I remember being on forums reading all the theories, and got up at 2 or 3am to watch the final episodes as they first aired.

I've on a few occasions, tried to watch it again but tend to get to about season 2 or 3 and give up. Done this a few times
It's not that I didn't enjoy it anymore, just so many episodes and their are the odd one that could easily have been skipped.

As for the ending, I can't remember my theory exactly, but I do believe they existed on the island the whole time and didn't mind the ending at all.
I completed the game on the xbox. That was fecking awful!

See this is what I find concerning. Satisfactory ending is what I ultimately crave. Is it as bad as people are claiming it to be?
Dont waste your time. Bigger let down than game of thrones. First few series were class though. Some intriguing

Shite ending. Definitely the same energy as GoT's horrendous denouement.

Season 1 was incredible though, and it didn't take too noticeable a dive in quality until s4.

"Udders."

Ah, but they did explain it! The numbers were to figure out who would become the next immortal person who would turn a big thing to keep a plug in a cave intact so the magic water didn't drain away from the island.

Pretty standard stuff, you know...
Ffs spoilers

Seems like people are split on this.

I love Lost but never watched the final season because of how bad everyone said it was.

I might rewatch the whole thing but I feel like the air of mystery and intrigue was the best thing about it, and that won’t be there anymore. It was the first series of this sort I ever watched, so I’d never been so gripped because of that.

I’ve never been into a show like I was into Lost, the first few seasons we’re absolutely amazing at the time. So much mystery and so many cliff hangers.....waiting on a new episode every week was murder.

Its a great show, deserves a second watch for sure. Definitely lost its way for at least a season with the whole “boat” storyline though.

In fairness still probably alot better than current shows so wont be a total waste of time.

Be interesting to read your running commentary of it in this thread on a first time watch actually.

Well ill probably be enjoying the first few seasons and then having an epic meltdown. So I'm sure it'll be amusing.

That was true for the third season. Half way through the third season they got a end date and planned it all out,

Oh, in that case I have a lot less sympathy with them. There's so much meandering about and introducing new lore in series 4 that I assumed they didn't get their end date until after that at least.

It definitely drops off and loses magic as it goes along, to the extent that by series 5 it feels like a completely different show, but the quality of the first couple of series is ludicrously high for a 40 minute an episode, 24 episodes a series show.
