Vuelta a Espana 2016

Last 10km, well set up for a bit of GC ding dong in the longest climb so far. The leading grousp of riders, containing Pierre Rolland, 2 mins ahead.

Nice one Froome. These fightbacks are what I love about him. Kudos Quintana the strongest man at the moment. Long way to go though.

Rest Day. boooohhhhhh

Haha I know. I'm on night shifts actually so for me it's one day extra that I don't miss. Quintana probably wishes it wasn't a rest day the way he's riding and I can see Froome finding his legs further in to the tour and I reckon he could just nick it. It will be bloody that's for sure. Can't wait.

Yeah it's gonna be great the next few days. Time trial will be a tough one for Quintana, that one will be pure damage control for him.

Top 2 riders fighting it out the front - can't get too much better than that! Froome looks like he getting back to his best and I wonder if Quintana has peaked too soon.

What a great stage that was yesterday. Yates was phenomenonal, Froome was imperious and Valverde was wiped out. No doubt that he'll have to be a super domestique for Quintana now. You can tell that Contador is trying to find the form of old, but it's just not all there. This is shaping up to be another brilliant Vuelta and I can't wait to see what happens today.

Might be worth tuning into this one early.

Froome in trouble. Seems Sky completely missed an early break with Quintana and Contador in it, who are both pushing on. Froome 1 minute back and most of his teammates further back still.

Update: Movistar x3 and Saxo x4 (including Quintana and Contador) in the 14-man breakaway. Froome at +2 minutes now - only Lopez with him and all other Sky riders way behind.

Yates and Chavez with Froome, so presumably OBE will help. Astana too for some reason.

I presume Froome wil take 1:30 to 2:00 vs Quintana on the TT, but this could well be curtains for him.

Froome have really fecked this one up. All he had to do was to stay in Quintana's wheel and he'd win the Vuelta on the TT.

Froome lost about 2½ minutes today, that's too much. The top 3 now:

1. Quintana
2. Froome +3'37
3. Chaves + 3'57

Quintana won it today, only a crash will change that.

Impressive from Quintana today - that should be decisive.

I was up the Aubisque this year, what a corker of a stage that one was. Bit late to the show here, but either way, impressive that Quintana despite that was able to go again and succeed today. Why didn't we get this guy at the Tour? Get them all doing all 3 I say, you'll get mega stages like that more often.

What a difference a day makes! I've no idea why Froome was so far back in the peleton at the start, since the tendency is to keep the leaders at the front in case of crashes, etc. Tactical naivety from the team lauded for their tactical nous.

Unbelievable stage yesterday. Barely got started and SKY completely unorganized. With over 100km to go they had the time to pull the gap back but they were scattered. They weren't riding hard enough to bring that time back- literally gobsmacked.

Anyone watching the time trial? Incredible fast so far from Froome. About half way.

Extraordinary race by Froome, finished in under 47 minutes. 2 minutes 16 seconds ahead of Quintana

Still 1:21 up to Quintana, it's still a good amount for the Colombian, and I can't remember Froome ever beating Quintana with that much outside of a TT.

EDIT: Oh wait, he did beat Quintana with 1:45 on Stage 8 of the 2013 Tour, but that was also on one of his beast days, I can't see him have such a day at this stage of the season.

Heroic effort from Froome though despite his team messing his chances of winning up.

Just caught up with the TT having been at work all day and resisted the temptation to sneak peek at the result! What a ride by Froome! Definitely with a shout of making up the deficit but the lack of a real super domestique a la Poels/Henao/Thomas/Landa will favour Quintana who looks good despite the TT deficit. What has impressed me is Froomes overall demeanout throughout this Vuelta, mainly his calmness and ease with himself and his teammates. Hasn't lost his cool (on camera anyway) and I really respect him for that, as for that momentary loss of concentration missing the breakaway this Vuelta should have been his. Perfectly set up for tomorrow, but I fear Quintana's lead will be just too much. Should Froome win tomorrow witha heroic effort from his teammates, I bet this will rank as his most satisfying GT win given the circumstances!

Makes for an interesting stage today.

Side note: some of the roads in Spain are a bit shitty, compared to the TDF where the roads at each stage are freshly done over.

Poels won a stage in the Tour of Brittain last night, once again showing that he is a great rider that may or may not be wasted being a domestique in the TdF.

If Froome can do it today, it will cement both him and Sky as more than just controlling riders that can win the tour through bullying the Peloton into submission.
