Virgil van Dijk | Performances

It’s not a red you mad bastards. He’s poked the ball away clean as a whistle. Painful for Mertens but it’s really nobodies fault. Just a footballing incident
He nearly broke his ankle, it's not "clean as a whistle" if it had been then he wouldn't have nearly broken his leg. Studs showing, off the ground and out of control, it's a red card

It's not an incident. This fecking abomination of the 21st century needs to die. It's a foul and a red card for a reckless tackle.

Would you say the same if van Dijk hadn't connected with Mertens given he cannot control what Mertens does with his leg after he cleanly played the ball?

Ah come on. He's an opposition player. As soon as you know he's fine boo away. Yes, for being fouled by a Liverpool player. Almost any reason is good enough to boo the opposition. I'm sure he would have been applauded had he been stretched off injured.
For me it implies they think Mertens was faking to get VVD booked. They haven't booed every Ayer who's been fouled tonight.

So what? You're saying that as if there has is any great logic behind booing at a football ground. You want to support your team and affect your opponent if you can. Hamšík, for example, should be booed for his stupid haircut alone. Football fans always seem to think the other team is faking every foul and their team should have a free kick after every contact going by the reactions in the stadium.

The thing for me is the commentators (and my dickhead Liverpool mate) saying it's not EVEN a foul, let alone a yellow...

They're insufferable. It's so important that they win nothing.

The last line is absolute gold. It's very important indeed

Think he was really good tonight, one of the best on the pitch.

It was a definite red card, dangerous play and could have ended the players season with the force he went in at with the studs

Hate to say it but in the current form don’t think there’s a better defender out tbere, immense.

No one is better than Rio for me but he is an incredible CB, remember when they used to concede goals galore and now they barely even concede a couple of chances in a game. We've got our work cut out on the weekend, if we even bother trying to attack that is.

What a player. For me he's already better than Rio.
Definition of recency bias in one post. VVD's a brilliant player, arguably one of the top 3 CBs anywhere at the moment but he doesn't hold a candle to Ferdinand, I'd be surprised if he ever got to his level.

Lot of posters who seem to be in denial of the fact that we're set to break the record for least conceded goals in the league this season and he's the shining star of that. If we keep this up all sorts of comparisons are merited.

Don't think anyone here's in denial, he's getting plenty of plaudits, we're just also well aware of how good Ferdinand was.

I remember staying he was a step above the likes of Alderweireld and Vertonghen at the start of the season to some derision from the likes of @SquishyMcSquish.

It's gone from a step to a flight of stairs.

He's very good to be fair. His reading, leadership, ball control and physicality is as good as you can expect from a cb at the top level. Let's see if he can keep it up for a long period of time and also lets see if, should he, he will stay at Liverpool.

Imperious performance yet again.

He seems to have every quality you want in a cb.

If you are talking about Chelsea's record from 04-05 You guys are probably not beating that.

The first comment on this thread is a sarcastic "great defender" after a 1-0 loss away to Swansea.

But whoever you are. He is not a great defender. He is better than that!

Jumping the gun a bit there... you have 22 games left and can only concede 8 more goals to break the record. You are conceding at a rate of 0.375 per game so far and on course for 14-15 goals in the season if you keep this up. Chelseas record stands at 15. You are on course for it but far from "set to break the record". Although imho VVD is the best CB in the world right now.

Never thought this VvD guy will be so good, really. He's worth every penny. Reads the game so well, he's done some massive interceptions each game he played. Aerial dominance is a given. He's also very fast for his size. Good long-range passing as well. Overall an ultimate package.
I've also just realized he played every game in PL and CL for us without rest. Just hope he doesn't break in this enduring Christmas run.
