Man Utd to raid Anderlecht a second time for Kompany
tribalfootball.com - October 26, 2003

Manchester United are set to raid Anderlecht again for one of their top junior prospects.
United snapped up Floribert Ngalula over the summer and are now chasing his ex-teammate Vincent Kompany.

The 17 year-old centre-half is already a first team regular and the Sunday People says he was watched by United chief scout Martin Ferguson in action against Celtic last week.

He's so young and already a first teamer

The boy is class!! Against Celtic he was phenomanal, after 20minutes Glen De Boeck was send off so Kompany was the only central defender left. He did nothing wrong, he won almost every duel, great tackles and blocks. His passing is also great, great long pass, great vision. Man of the match that game for anderlecht. And all that for a 17year old!
Ow yeah, I heard he don't has a contract with anderlecht because he's not 18years, let's get him! ;)

FOOTBALL: HOTLINE - MAN UTD DOT KOM!

MANCHESTER UNITED have lined up a deal to sign Vincent Kompany (left), Anderlecht's brilliant 17-year-old centre half.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to take the kid to Old Trafford where his pal and former team-mate Floribert Ngalula has already signed.

Kompany was watched by chief European scout Martin Ferguson when he gave a marvellous, mature display against Celtic in the Champions League last week.

Brussels-born Kompany is already cup-tied in Europe this season but United want to move in fast and tie up a deal in the next few months before their rival big boys move in.

Kompany has walked into the Anderlecht side this season and Belgium even picked him in their squad for a recent Euro 2004 qualifier as they build for the future.

Anderlecht hope to make a financial killing from the Champions League and they will look for a big fee for Kompany, the latest in a long line of discoveries they have made down the years. Tall, skilful and left-sided, Kompany made the big breakthrough in a Champions League qualifier in July and has held his place ever since in a meteoric rise to the top.

He has been at Anderlecht since he was six and his dad Pierre, who handles his affairs, insisted he stayed there until he made his name.

Arsenal tried to sign him last season before his debut and the cost now would start at around £2m. But that might still prove to be a bargain.

Crafty United snapped up Ngalula, 16, last summer on a free transfer and now he may be re-united with Kompany in Manchester.

United are making big strides in picking up young talent and are making a big push at youth level just now - they reckon they have been left behind on that side of the game in recent years.

The flow of hopefuls coming through the ranks has slowed down and the cost of buying older players tests even their bank balance.

Wimbledon starlet Lee Martin played for them in a game behind closed doors last week and is likely to choose the Reds over Arsenal, as The SP first revealed last month.

United also gave a trial to United States whiz-kid Danny Szetela.

MANCHESTER UNITED are sending their bright youngster Daniel Nardiello on loan to Swansea.

17 yo playing CB in the CL is very impressive, and training with the senior international squad too.
And we already have Spector and McShane, two very promising 17 year old CBs. Its a winning strategy, investing in youth rather that in the mega transfers. His contract expires June 2004, so I assume he wouldn't cost a bundle, and he can probably earn a nice signing fee to see out his contract.

But, my guess is this kid will be hard to sign because he is probably getting a lot of satisfaction playing first team football for Anderlecht, CL and getting the exposure that has earned a call up to the national team- and if he joined United its hard to see him getting into the first team immediately, and youth team or reserves is not going to interest him after tasting CL etc.

At least unlike the feeling that Kleberson was signed in anticipation of Ronaldinho's arrival, this lad would be signed for his own ability rather than COMPANY for Floribert Ngalula! :p

United target Kompany earns new deal
Tuesday, 28 October 2003

Manchester United target Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany has been rewarded for his progress into the first team this season with a new improved deal.

The 17-year-old has attracted the attention of a number of top clubs including United after bursting onto the scene this season.

Kompany has broken into the first team this term and has impressed in their Champions League campaign.

His performances have even seen him win a call-up to the Belgian national team and he is regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe.

United watched Kompany in last week's win over Celtic and the player's agent Jacques Lichtenstein revealed United had declared their interest in the classy central defender.

"He has been followed for some time by Manchester," Lichtenstein told Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

"Coach Alex Ferguson knows Vincent. There is nothing concrete at the moment, but for sure they will try to follow him."

Anderlecht confirmed that United had made enquiries about Kompany and that they were not the only club after him.

"Manchester United is not alone. The telephone continues ringing for Kompany," said an Anderlecht spokesman.

Anderlecht are keen to fend off interest from top clubs by bringing Kompany in line with some of the established stars at Stade Constant Vanden Stock.

Kompany's deal runs until 2006 and the player has indicated he is happy to stay at the club to continue his education.

Vincent Kompany's agent has revealed to skysports.com that the young defender has his heart set on a switch to England should he leave Anderlecht.
The 17-year-old has attracted the interest of a host of clubs across Europe after breaking into the Anderlecht side this term.

The classy defender has shone in his side's Champions League campaign so far and his performances have not gone unnoticed by several major clubs.

Manchester United have been strongly linked with the Belgian ace, while Bayern Munich have made tentative enquires about his availability.

Kompany's representative Jacques Lichtenstein admitted there had been a great deal of interest in the youngster although there had been no offers as yet for him.

"At present there has been no concrete offers, but I know that there has been a lot of clubs around Europe scouting him," said Lichtenstein.

"I think someone from Manchester United was watching him in the Champions League win over Celtic last week.

"He is undoubtedly one of the best talents around at 17-years-old and there is a lot of clubs looking at him.

"Anderlecht do not want to sell and Vincent is quite happy to stay and learn his football at the club.

"He will definitely stay during the January transfer window, but things could change in the summer depending on Anderlecht.

"Bayern Munich phoned Anderlecht about him after their Champions League game, but Anderlecht told them he was not for sale."

Lichtenstein revealed if Kompany ever left Anderlecht his preferred move would be to The Premiership.

"In a few years he could move and if he did he would prefer to move to England ahead of Italy or Spain.

"His priority is to play in England and Arsenal is his team.

"His best friend is Yves Makaba Makalamby, who is at Chelsea and he has told him all about London.

"He knows everything about England and he follows The Premiership.

"He watched Arsenal play last season against Leeds and even if he got an offer from a top Italian club he would like to go to England."

Anderlecht kid Kompany prefers Arsenal to Man Utd
tribalfootball.com - October 30, 2003

Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany favours a move to Arsenal over Manchester United.
The 17 year-old Belgian is a prime target for United, but his agent, Jacques Lichtenstein, told skysports.com: "I think someone from Manchester United was watching him in the Champions League win over Celtic last week.

"He is undoubtedly one of the best talents around at 17-years-old and there is a lot of clubs looking at him.

Thats a shame, sounds a great young gun, but money talks so lets hope

Ole was reportedly a Liverpool fan.

Unless he wants to declare that Arsenal is on the up & go the Kewell way, I don't see preferences as that big an issue - especially if it's uttered by an agent.

Ferguson is travelling to see Kompany in action against Celtic on Wednesday.

£3 million apparently.

He's cup-tied though.

I doubt the fact that he's cup-tied would have any relevance. Even if Rio is out, I wouldn't want a 17 year old coming into our defence half way through the season and playing in crucial Champions Leauge games.

Anyway, if this lad is as good as they say he is, £3 million would be a steal.

Hardly likely they'll get him for only £3 mil, if the transfer does take place - it's money-bags United afterall & based on how over-the-top fees we've paid for other players, a figure closer to £5-7 mil, if not more, will probably be the case.

We were linked with the Anderlecht forward also I believe. And we signed a youth player from them during the summer, so we have a relationship with the club.

Its hard to see a 17 yo going straight into the United first team, especially at centre back, he sounds like more of a long term solution. So that would be the problem in attracting him IMO, because he is already getting so much action where he is- first team and champions league.

No harm in trying for him though, he can not sign a contract with Anderlecht until the Summer when he turns 18, so we can make an offer too.

Ferguson to check out Anderlecht's Kompany

By Alan Nixon

03 November 2003

Sir Alex Ferguson will make a personal check on Anderlecht's brilliant teenage centre-back Vincent Kompany as he looks for a potential replacement for Rio Ferdinand.

The Manchester United manager is going to see how the 17-year-old copes with the Celtic's Chris Sutton and John Hartson in the Champions' League game on Wednesday. The club have already made contact with the Belgian champions about signing Kompany in the transfer window in January.

Anderlecht want around £3m for the young defender, who is already in the Belgium squad and tipped as the best up-and-coming talent in Europe. Ferguson knows he may need a new defender with a ban looking likely for Ferdinand following a Football Association misconduct charge for failing to attend a drugs test last month.

Kompany has emerged as the leading option, impressing United scouts with his mature displays since breaking into the first team. The teenager has become an ever-present for the Belgian club and could fit into the United side because of his maturity, strength and ability.

Kompany could not play in the Champions' League because he is cup-tied, but United will probably have to sign a new man to rotate their defenders. Other names being mentioned include Middlesbrough's Gareth Southgate, but the ideal choice would be a young player who would not just be a stop-gap.

The FA is investigating comments by Ferguson suggesting that the ruling body made a deal with Arsenal over disciplinary measures which followed charges for the fracas in the League game at Old Trafford.

"We are looking very closely at the comments made by Alex Ferguson," an FA spokesman, Adrian Bevington, said yesterday. "No deals have been cut. We believe our disciplinary procedures are of the highest integrity."

Though he will not be able to sign a new contract until the Summer, and Sir Alex is rumoured to be watching him play Celtic today, it looks like neither he nor his club are interested in a transfer:

Anderlecht hold on to Kompany
Tuesday, 04 November 2003
By Berend Scholten
The defender is enjoying a terrific debut season

The revelation of the Belgian season has not been an attacker or a midfield player, but a 17-year-old central defender - RSC Anderlecht's Vincent Kompany.

Impressive defender
With team captain Glen De Boeck injured, the strapping youngster has enjoyed a senior debut and so impressed Anderlecht coach Hugo Broos that he has remained in the first team for Belgian First Division and UEFA Champions League games.

National call-up
Even De Boeck's return to action has not shifted Kompany from the starting lineup, and to add to the excitement, the centre-back received his first international call-up at the age of 17 years and six months. That made him Belgium's youngest player since the great Paul Van Himst was selected in 1960 at the age of 17 years and 17 days.

Foreign interest
Kompany is 1.9m tall and very quick, and scouts from top clubs have been flocking to watch him play. His Champions League displays have seen Arsenal FC, FC Bayern München, Juventus FC and AFC Ajax take an interest, while Manchester United FC's chief scout Martin Ferguson has also travelled to see Kompany in action.

Previous clear-out
Such interest in one of their finest talents has got supporters worried. They well remember the aftermath of the 2000/01 season, when Anderlecht reached the second group stage of the Champions League only to see Jan Koller, Tomasz Radzinski, Bart Goor and Didier Dheedene leave the club, heralding a slump in their fortunes.

New wisdom
However, Anderlecht seem to have learned from that mistake. The club moved swiftly to improve the terms of Kompany's current contract, which runs until 2006, and when he turns 18 on 10 April 2004, he is set to sign another deal which will keep him in Brussels until 2008.

Trophy target
Indeed, the club's president Roger Vanden Stock was even keener to keep Kompany under contract, and was rumoured to have said that the defender could immediately sign a 20-year deal if he wanted one. "That was a figure of speech," he said subsequently. "I could have said 40 years. But five years is the maximum that is allowed. We have better financial means than three years ago, and our intention is to keep our best players now. Our intention is to win trophies, not to get rich."

Kompany settled
Kompany himself believes his interests are best served at Anderlecht for a while longer. "Don't you worry, I will stay here," he said. "At the moment the zeros in my contract are not so important. If I wanted to leave, I would have been gone already."

Fatherly advice
In part, the club have Kompany's Congolese father to thank for that. Pierre Kompany has been answering the phone for his son and making it abundantly clear to other clubs that the defender is staying put. "All those clubs - I hope they leave us alone for a while," he said. "Vincent has not even played half a season yet. My son is no merchandise. He is not for sale. People get real, he is still only 17 years old."

Warning note
Anderlecht's honorary president Constant Vanden Stock would approve. "I would not want to lose him," he said. "He should not make the same mistake as Enzo Scifo, who went to Italy when he was too young. Even when Kompany is 20 years old, he would not be ready for a big league like that."

While I'm sorry that it looks like we won't be getting a highly talented young player after all, I think Anderlecht are going about this the right way.

Stronger clubs = better competition in Europe.

I like the fact that we are aggressively targetting promising youngsters worldwide unlike past years when we were only content with local youth talent, with this global youth stance and our increasing agreements with clubs around the world can only spell good things for our future.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson personally checked on Anderlecht's Vincent Kompany on Wednesday, but his club are insistent he will not be leaving.
The 17-year-old starlet has made a rapid rise through the ranks this season for both club and country - although he had a torrid time against Celtic as the Scots eased to a 3-1 win.

However, Kompany's reputation remains largely untarnished and he is still regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world.

Ferguson is already thought to have dispatched scouts to watch Kompany in action and the club are also likely to have been able to check on him through their Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp.

The likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Ajax and Real Madrid are also thought to have sent scouts in recent weeks to check on Kompany's amazing progress.

Despite the mass interest in him, it seems his immediate future remains in Brussels.

Kompany is currently contracted until 2006, but he is set to pen a new deal when he turns 18 - which will add a further two-years to his contract.

"Don't you worry, I will stay here," Kompany said recently.

"At the moment the zeros in my contract are not so important.

"If I wanted to leave, I would have been gone already."

His father Pierre added: "All those clubs - I hope they leave us alone for a while,"

"Vincent has not even played half a season yet. My son is no merchandise.

"He is not for sale. People need to get real, he is still only 17 years old."

Anderlecht president Roger Vanden Stock continued the 'not for sale' talk by stating he would give the player a 40-year deal if he could.

"I could have said 40 years," he said.

"But five years is the maximum that is allowed.

"We have better financial means than three years ago, and our intention is to keep our best players now.

"Our intention is to win trophies, not to get rich."

FERGIE NEEDS KOMPANY

By David Mcdonnell

MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their efforts to land highly-rated Belgian teenager Vincent Kompany.

United have watched the Anderlecht centre-back throughout the season and boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes the 17-year-old is one of the finest prospects in Europe. Old Trafford officials have already enquired about the £7million-rated Kompany and are keen to sign him and beat off interest from Real Madrid and Arsenal.

United hope they will be able to agree a deal to allow the Belgian Under-21 star to remain at Anderlecht for a further season before making a permanent switch.

Fergie has already signalled his intention to build a fourth great United team with signings of young talents like Tim Howard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kleberson, David Bellion and Liam Miller. Now the United boss is determined to add Kompany to that list.

Anderlecht improved Kompany's pay deal in October but United are confident of landing him.

Fergie watched the defender in Anderlecht's Champions League defeat by Celtic, the game when the manager decided to sign Miller.

I brought him on CM, he was good.

At 17, he looks like amacing potential. I say sign him.

Agreed. He's already fitting in better than Veron was on the pitch. He may still be just off on some reads, but he's going to be one of our biggest creators in the coming years.

So his four game ban (assuming it stays as such, I'm sure it will), means he misses:

Liverpool (h) (League Cup)
Wigan (a)
Tottenham (h)
Liverpool (a) (League Cup)

Back for the Everton away game.

Could've been worse then, considering the League Cup matches count. Still leaves them stretched, with Toure away as well. I don't know how much Mancini trusts Savic, so we might see Richards at CB, Zabaleta RB.

edit: Didn't see this was in the transfer forum! Just searched for a Kompany thread.

Indeed.

I still feel that whilst Bellion, Miller and Djemba x2 were very average, Kleberson had the quality to be a success with us but a combination of injuries and not settling just didn't allow it.
