Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester City for Richard Dunne, believed to be about £6m, and hope to follow up the signing of the Republic of Ireland centre-half with the acquisition of the Blackburn Rovers full-back Stephen Warnock.

Villa confirmed today that they are in talks with Blackburn about Warnock, although it appears that their pursuit of Dunne is more advanced as Martin O'Neill seeks to strengthen his threadbare squad.

The Villa manager has identified Dunne as a replacement for Martin Laursen, who retired at the end of last season, and is likely to offer the 29-year-old the captaincy at the Midlands club when he discusses personal terms. Dunne has almost three years remaining on his contract at City but the arrival of Joleon Lescott this week, following the signing of Kolo Touré earlier in the summer, means that he faces the prospect of spending much of the season on the substitutes' bench.

Everton had also considered a move for the former Goodison Park trainee but David Moyes is now closing in on Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin, whom O'Neill has tracked for much of the summer without any success. The Villa manager turned his attention to Dunne when it became clear that the central defender was likely to become available and will be hopeful that a deal can be agreed in time for him to make his debut against Fulham on Sunday.

Beye Davies Dunne Warnock

decent back line, but you can't help but feel last season was as close as they are ever going to get to challenging the top 4.

He'll be a good signing for them. Very solid, minimum of fuss, and by all accounts, he's a good presence to have in the dressing room.

He'll be devastated to hear he's getting chucked out of my dream team if this deal goes through. I think Villa will struggle this season. Good replacement for Laursen though. Pretty much like for like in terms of style and leadership.

I honestly don't think Lescott is a significant improvement on Dunne.

Certainly not £18m better.

Good signing for Villa but they still need a centre mid or two.

Agree with this

Dunne had a poor season last year but so did the entire City defence especially Micah Richards. Before that he was City player of the season every year for 3 or 4 in a row. Also he never has bad game for Ireland. I think he will do well for Villa. They have a lot of options now all across their defence.

Lescott is a good player but I often wonder if his goal scoring record was not so good would his defensive talents be as widely recognised? I doubt it. I would be surprised if he adds a great deal to the City team

I see the culture of 'change' continues at Man City. Anyway he should be a decent signing for Aston Villa. They need another solid defender to help their ambitions of finishing high up the table.

I would have Lescott over Dunne, but only just. They are sort of damaging their squad though if they sell a player who's been very consistent for them over the years.

When Sparky came out and said Lescott was the best defender in the league i did let out a chuckle.

Wonder what Everton are going to do with the money now, I assumed they'd be the ones signing Dunne. Sanderos to them looks all the more likely.

What of Kompany and Onouha?

Dunne is only 29? I thought he was something like 34 at least :S

Good deal if it goes through...

Great deal for Villa. I'm surprised City want to get rid of him. It could end up a big mistake. Hasn't he been their Player of the Year on numerous occasions? Also he was club captain.

Agreed. Why is it that every time I hear Orlando Engelaar's name, I think Villa.

Read that moyes expects to get at least 3 or 4 players in before the season starts. If he can get dystin in for a reasonable price then its a good bit of business for villa and everton with city being bumped again :D

One of the few players left in the team that wanted to play for City and not just for the money and they sell him! Dunne is a quality defender and IMO no better or worse than Lescott.

One problem with Villa's back 5 options is that they are hardly building for the future - it's largely stop-gap measures that will involve lots of further changes next season and beyond. For example:

Friedl: 38
Beye: 31
Bouma: 31
Luke Young: 30
Dunne: 30 next month (assuming they sign him)
Shorey: 28
Cuellar: 28

That's a bit unceremonious isn't it? Giving your captain the heave ho?

I agree, and as Named Changed said he was their player of the year on a few ocasions.

Now who will City have as their captain? Gareth Barry, Toure, Shay Given.....

I've never been a fan of a player walking into a new team and taking over the captancy, I think it's something you have to earn.

They have a team of grade A cnuts and probably need a cnut to captain them

Jesus, they're all a bit older than I thought. Especially Beye, I thought he was really young.

Why are they stop gap measures?

These players (bar the keeper) have a good half decade left in the game. Defenders typically peak later in their careers. It's not like they're all 35 now

I don't think Dunne is anything particularly special at the back, certainly not Vidic with pace (:D), but he's a good signing for Villa

In what parallel universe Lescott is rated at £22million is beyond me though. City have gone mental, at least spunk the top money on top players!

So at what age do you reckon defenders hit their peak?

they might sign warnock as well

davies is 24
warnock 27
it really isnt that bad .
they can add 1 defender a year over the next 4-5 years and they will be just fine

By the looks of it, they haven't got money to piss up the wall on buying young defenders who look like they could be good in the future. They need decent players in the here and now. And young defenders who have already somewhat proven themselves (not that I can even think of many) would undoubtedly cost them a pretty penny - especially considering the crazy prices this summer. Besides, for all we know, Villa might have one or two decent defensive prospects coming through.
