Barca keeper's pay demand sparks Manchester United interest

By ANDY DUNN, 13/06/2009

MANCHESTER UNITED are keeping an eye on Barcelona's Victor Valdes after his contract talks broke down.

The Catalan keeper's deal runs out at the end of next season - and he wants parity with the Spanish club's top out-field stars.

United have tracked Valdes all season but expected his contract to be settled after his end-of-season heroics in the Champions League. But Barca have been stunned by the 27-year-old's £7.6million pay demands.

President Joan Laporta said: "We have a wage structure and we are not planning to change it.

"We were surprised to hear what the player wanted. I'd like to think he is aware of what his agent has asked for."

United had turned their attentions to Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez but could now refocus on the Barca man.

A backup who earns more than our regular players?

Well, he's clearly stupid asking for that amount of money. Perhaps he's stupid enough to have 90% of it made up of clean sheet bonus payments.

Course, being on the bench it'd be hard for him to keep a clean sheet.

If they do let go of Valdes and bring in Diego Lopez they'd improve that defence massively.

No thanks. He's the worst player in Barca's starting XI.

They can sell him to the dippers and get Reina back to Nou Camp.

No! He's the worst first choice keeper out of the top 10 elite teams of Europe.

Depends who you'd have in the top 10.

AC Milan and Bayern both have worse keepers I think, and one of them would be in my top 10.

Probably doesn't mean much on the surface but the player's desire to not renew his contract that ends in 2014 might indicate that others could potentially follow suit

He's a career Barcelona player having come up through the cantera and best mate with Iniesta. Worrying news, tbh

Any reasons as to why?

From the outside it looks like very strange decision. Its not like he can go anywhere better.

Perhaps better money in the Premiership? Not feeling valued by the club as there had been some tit for tat in the media about his renegotiations between agent & club. Hard to say but maybe it's as simple as him having won enough at Barcelona and wanting to see other cultures as he cited.

It'll be the first cantera player willingly wanting to leave in this era, it's a significant development

Negotiation tactics to earn better money. Unless Barca really want to offload him for another prospect.

A lot of people's first guess but unlikely, IMO. No club player has come heavy handed into negotiations by saying 'no offer needed, not renewing'. Seems legit and it's 18 months in advance which means he's giving the club a chance to find a new keeper or perhaps move him sooner.

Agreed.

Valdes is roughly on a par with Lindegaard in my estimation. He'd be best advised to shut up and accept whatever he's being paid already. Surely he gets handsome bonuses from trophies that he does little to help haul in.

I was wondering if they might actually make a move for Courtois.

Chelsea won't sell.

They might have to. Of course at this moment in time everything is hypothetical and speculation but he has shown his worth in La Liga at a top club for 1 1/2 seasons now and if Barcelona come knocking on the door, few players would say no.
