Victor Lindelöf

Guys - big question. It's evident we're in the transfer market for a centerback. What i currently see is Lindelof for 40 mil odd & now there's news about Manolas for 50 mil pounds.

I'm having a hard time understanding the transfer market today, given these examples. Do we really need to pay 40-50 mil for a good defender or even a good prospect? It's so much money - we're having a laugh whenever a young player like Stones screws up, but at this rate we're not going to be far off isn't it?

It's crazy how much money is being thrown around nowadays.

Agreed but teams know we have money to spend and United often pay a premium

Aargh fair point, man. I guess i got a bit taken aback with the magnitude of these deals. Let's see what we end up shelling out in the end.

Have a nice day !

I agree, but they help articulate my point that he's certianly no less comfortable than Rojo. The latter prematurely hoofs the ball or gives away the ball in short passes more often than Smalling has. That to me suggests a lack of composure and more nervousness.

FWIW the case is the same off ball too, as shown by his two blatant red card challenges. If the right calls had been made on those occassions the entire caf would be talking about how he should be sold with Fellaini. But he got away with them and here we are.

You don't need to be world class to be better than Rojo on the ball.
I agree with your points about Rojo, and i don't really want to turn a blind eye towards his past performances but what you've highlighted is mostly the Rojo from before Mourinho's tenure. And you've compared a fair bit of those performances with say an in-form Smalling from last season. Smalling was shit for a way longer period and if we give Rojo the kind of time we gave Smalling then I'm pretty sure he'll (Rojo) turn out to be the better defender.

Even this season Rojo's on-ball prowess hasn't been something to write home about, but with more assured displays in defence he has been gaining confidence in that part of his game. He's been bringing the ball forward more in the last few games and his long-ball to Rooney in the last game (I'm forgetting if it was Rooney or Rashford) before getting injured wasn't too shabby either.

As of now, one can argue for and against both of them, but personally, just going by what i feel - whenever Smalling plays I expect something to go wrong. Rojo just instills and seems more confident - most importantly even when he fecks up, that doesn't seem to bother him much unlike Smalling who goes into a shell.

Simply put, we need someone with both the defensive qualities and set piece threat of Vidic AND the reading of the game and comfort on the ball / distribution of Rio

Does Lindelof fit the bill???

He's much more of a 'Rio' than he is a 'Vidic'. At the height of his powers, Vidic was probably the best penalty box defender in the world. Lindelof does not possess that kind of dominant aerial ability, but he is a calm presence on the ball and very comfortable playing out from the back, which is something we've lacked for a while now.

It would be stupid to sign him. We have CB's who are equal to him. I would give Smalling/Rojo/Jones to partner Bailly (best CB) another year..after next year we can evaluate the situation.

Let's splash our money more in midfield or signing a RB/Striker.

From the few games I've seen him play I can't fathom why we would be interested in him. The prices quoted for him seem absolutely ridiculous.

But if we do sign him I hope he proves Mr wrong.

A good decision for both United and Lindelöf i think. Hopefully he will continue to develop in Benfica and be more ready when the next step actually comes. Maybe already in the summer, maybe later and maybe to United.

One of the weirdest transfer rumors. And not once have I felt a single emotion about the outcome. Just want it to be over, it's exhausting.

Sorry isnt that wjat United Report always do? Find them quite useful for collating various rumours etc.

I think he's more like Vidic in some ways, specifically he's more of a strong, not as fast player but I see what you're saying.

I've got a feeling this deal was lined up since the summer, Jose probably thought Rojo and Jones were both duds and was getting a reinforcement alongside Bailly+Smalling.

Since Jones and Rojo have sorted themselves out though I don't think this guy is any better than them, and for the price quoted it just would be silly. From most accounts he isn't in the same level that Bailly was before he left.

I make you right as absolutely no one could have predicted the upturn in not only Rojo but Jones too. There's real competition for places and the likes of Smalling now knows he needs to contribute more if he's going to start or maybe even stay. That said, bar Bailly who genuinely even now looks better than our current crop but equally we know can get better. Jones, Royo and Smalling I think even at their best in my opinion will be able to take his on to the next level competing with and beating the Real's, Barca et al. IMO there is still a place for a world class CB, but this lad isn't it.

I know the market is over inflated at the moment, but for £40-£50 million I'd be expecting one of the worlds best (and most established defenders) and not some 22 year old that nobody had even heard of a year ago.

If we are going to spend that kind of money on a defender then we should go a bit higher and aim for someone like Boateng at Bayern.

Boateng would cost close to £100m mate. £40m-50m is what it takes to purchase potential now, especially for United.

There's only a small number of players I would say are CLEARLY better. Bonucci and Godin are safe bets I would say, but apart from that the lack of class CB's are apparent.

I think we were interested at a lower price but benfica maybe asked too much and we asked them to shove it. Still this story might be the new GAITAN story.

I imagine we'd be searching for a CB who's both aerially-dominant and adept at playing out from the back (to compensate for Bailly's weakness in those areas). It's true that the number of potentially available players at the centre of that particular Venn diagram is pretty small. Manolas and Van Dijk have the quality and experience to make an instant impact. After that... Laporte? Slim (and hugely expensive) pickings.

Shame we let Spurs have a free run at Alderweireld when he was available.

I really hope we did tell them to shove it.

I'm sure I read an article recently that said he'd been offered to Middlesbrough a year ago for £700k. Expecting United to pay over 50 times that amount is fecking ridiculous.

Three weeks till the end of a window. Just grab a popcorn because we might even hear about Ronaldo's comeback again at this point.

It's funny when we're linked to a player for huge amounts and then the player moves to some other club for a fraction. Everybody wants to milk us, but hopefully Woody is becoming more shrewd. 40 million for potential and someone who has played 10 senior games is ridiculous.

He has played 197 senior games though.

As some have stated already this was a deal that would of gone through if Jones and Rojo hadnt of stepped up to the plate. If we had of been half a dozen points off 5th place now he would of been here january 1st even if it had of cost £40 million. Now we can be choosy. It still might happen if not now then in the summer, but at a lot lower fee as were not desperate now.

So not true.
That was meant to be euros but still, the point stands. He wouldn't be worth what he would cost considering the likelihood of declining so close to his 30s. IMO €100m is pretty accurate to what it would take for Bayern to sell, which they have no need or desire to. They are short on quality at CB positions if anything, why sell one of their best players?

He is in the top 4 CBs in the world. See how much Otamendi, Mangala and Stones cost City. Highly rated CBs are difficult to acquire without paying way over their value. Boateng is one of the best around and twice the player of the aforementioned City transfers.

To me it sounds like we are getting a grip on things outside football as well. Surely it's a negotiation tactic by Woody. We've always had to overpay for players for too many transfer windows now. Ever since SAF left, the transfer prices for players went haywire and all clubs took advantage of our desperation. Currently we are in a good position and can start taking more risks by giving ultimatums on the transfer fee.

No way he's worth that kind of money. And since Jones and Rojo started playing like footballers again, we are in a much better position currently than when we started the negotiations for Lindelof.
