Victor Lindelöf

This conversation reminds me Talisca to Chelsea. People shouldn't listen to any valuation coming from portuguese media.

Well...Benfica didn't want to sell both Lindelof and Semedo in january. We look pretty much settled at CB positions at the moment and if I would want to pick one of two to buy it would be Semedo without a doubt. World class prospect RB, 22 years old, position that we need to take care of soon since Valencia will be 32 soon and we don't have a proper backup either. Two of them sharing game for a year or so for Semedo to settle and then Tony to fall back to 2nd option with getting older would be ideal.

So...could this be that we changed our mind and want Semedo now and Lindelof in the summer? One of the things people were worried was lack of experience Lindelof has, another 6 months in Benfica before coming here would go a long way to remedy that.

Was finding it fishy that only Portuguese sources were reporting this. Seems every single one of their newspapers is unreliable and can be added to the ban list. Just a defender's agent using us to get a better contract, again.

Specially those affiliated with Benfica. Tbf most of the recent portuguese transfers have been Over valued

O Jogo and Jornal de Notícias are alright. Rest i do agree are rubbish and propense to certain club influence.

Portuguese right backs are usually pretty expensive. Coentrao went for €30m all those years ago so if we end up paying a bit more for Semedo it'd probably end up as a coup if he comes good.

Also, we are already in the absurd zone. £30m 5 years ago were still a lot of money, nowadays it can't buy you a Troy Deeney.

It's the whole portuguese market. It's pretty expensive for the level of our league in my opinion. Part of the football marketing bubble.

Wasn't he linked to us as well?

He has been linked to every clubs having a bank account, they tried their best to find a buyer.

I'm almost sure that they are behind all the Benfica's players youtube highlights and all the articles in every dodgy papers in Europe. All their players are also initially valued at 35m and the currency is irrelevant.

O Jogo, A Bola and Record all reported it. Can't rely on any of them.

Intriguing btw that @Acquire Me had no info about this deal at all - and nor did any quality reporters. That Telegraph piece looks to be a standard jigzaw of rumours now.

Which player do you think is ready to move to a bigger league? Seems there are quite a few talented players around.

So he has indeed signed a new contract which puts his release clause at €60m. Would love to know what this transfer was all about, whether there was actually any genuine interest? Or did we walk away because he was too expensive?

Looking at our CB options with Bailly leaving for AFCON we got Rojo, Jones and Smalling. Blind can fill in as well so that's okay I guess.

Relying on Jones and Rojo is asking for trouble but with Smalling, Bailly (come Feb) and Blind available we should be good till the summer

Next season we need that top class CB to play with Bailly though albeit if we're spending big on a CB I'd prefer it to be the best of the best

Interesting... so it's pretty much confirmed that we are interested but decided against buying him this window because of how well Jones and Rojo have played recently. Portuguese media jumped the gun once again. If reports are to be believed that we've scouted this lad a lot and Mourinho's a big fan then I would expect us to be in for him in the summer. Double swoop for Lindelöf and Semedo perhaps?

Did question this one as it made no sense. For me we need an established CB who knows the prem as we have enough CB's in the club to play the secondary role. No easy to find as we are talking 32 year old Rio or JT type player. That said I'm really impressed with the lad at Southampton as he's an upgrade on Smalling.

Renewing a contract after apparently agreeing a deal. 60m Euros for a posh and hip swedish John Stones. Are they having a laugh over there? We are not City, fecking cnuts. Their papers are useless too, Semedo was probably just another clickbait fabricated story.

If Jose wants him (or both of them) then I suspect this is the club putting a marker down over the fee.

Why would he sign a new contract right before a move to Manchester United, you don't get that offer everyday, I'd be furious with Benfica's greed if I were him.

He shouldn't have signed it. Period.

I won't be surprised that at 60m United would aim for better targets.....Gimenez maybe?

Napoli scored 6 goals in 2 games against Benfica with him playing both. Benfica had the 3rd best defensive record of Group B, behind Napoli and Dynamo Kiev.

In the first match they conceeded 4, none of them were individually to do with Lindelof although one came from a shot that deflected off of him into the path of an attacker who then won a penalty. Just bad luck really, and Nelson Semedo came up short on one of the goals.

In the 2nd match Mertens plays Callejon in behind Lindelof and he finishes for the first goal. Then Mertens dribbles past Luisao in the box and fires home while Lindelof attempts, but fails, to block the effort.

For a 60 million euro defender we aren't getting 60 million euro defending. It seems we're paying an astronomical fee because he stands out with his passing compared to other CBs. I'm not sure anyone's passing stats are better other than Barcelona CBs. So there is that.

For passing though, we have rojo who is decent and blind who is excellent at it already anyway and both of them are hardly 'shit' defenders.

I myself fail to see with this guy's deal unless we have an intention to move some defenders out.

We have a lot of defenders atm. Even CBJ said jose told him that the squad was a bit too big for him atm.

To be honest the BBC's article could just be a reaction to the news that he's going to sign a new contract, we may have leaked it to put pressure on him not to do so.

The Portuguese press/media are only printing what they're getting briefed from the Benfica hierarchy. Gaitan, Garay, Sanches are some examples of players getting constantly linked to us thanks to Benfica giving false information to their media outlets.

Could be. It also could be the case that at 60m United might aim for better options.

Looks like benfica is desperate to sale players, the same story in the past and the newspapers kept saying the entire planet want their players then they renew the contracts and hope for a team to splash money for average players, the only issue here is mourinho and Mendes.

I think united are interested, but maybe want to see where they finish and see if they can get a better player. Also he has not performed that well since being linked to us and us having scouts their every match must have noticed this so maybe we will research him more.

If we're not going to conclude this deal after all, I will be rather disappointed.

Yes, Jones and Rojo are playing well at the moment, but they could be injured or rubbish again with the click of your fingers.

Then again we do have Fosu-Mensah and Tuanzebe in reserve. I was more intrigued to see what Lindelof could do at right-back in truth.

Didn't his agent make comments that sounded like he is a goner? Plus veloso and their manager was going on about how they would cope without him? It wasn't just the benefica board

I don't know what the exact situation is with Lindelof, but Benfica have a history of briefing false information like with the players I mentioned in my earlier post.

His agent was probably just trying to get the best contract for his client with his comments.

Veloso and their manager were probably just towing the club line?

He said it.

If Mou thinks Rojo is a great CB then we wouldn't want to bring in another CB for 30m+ wouldn't we?

Who the fu...knows what Jose thinks. He still gives Fellaini playing time for whatever reason.

All we definitely know is
1) Rojo is POOR as a left back
2) The Reds scoring defense is 5th in the league...even after giving up 4 to Chelsea and 2 to City (neither game with Jones and Rojo as CB)
3) The Reds pay a guy 300k a week who comes off the bench

Jose may be spending that $$ to have Lindy play left back. We don't know.

Scousers stole our identity!!!

This transfer going to happened in January was a no go from the very beginning.

The fee reported is laughable. Lindelof is probably a good prospect but any fee north of €30m is comedy figures.

Why should United buy a CB when we have five (5) international central defenders on our payroll? Makes no sense, even if Bailly is away for 4-5 weeks.

If we buy a new player in January it will be a midfielder.

Good, flog Depay and Schniederlin now, then keep our powder dry for when the grown ups do their business in the summer.

Ultimately we have more than enough with what we've got, assuming there are no more outgoings planned, and Jose will use Schweinstegier when needed.

On the plus side, assuming any of this is true, we do appear to have cash available for this window, so maybe we'll spend it somewhere else.
I'm not sure centre-back should be our top priority anyway, so no tears here.

With the way Mourinho's signings have been playing so far, I would be inclined to trust his decisions on transfers.
