Well one thing I'm sure of is that benfica fans would be over the moon with that fee. They have better cbs.

Trying to find puns for his name but I can't think of any.

So he's injury prone without the facial features? Do not want

Who was the last player that moved directly from he Portuguese league to the Premier League and was a success?

Matic? Anyone else?

Do we have to pay this amount of money on a CB? IMO we good three CBs at the team. We can use that money buying a good replacement for Carrick before adding a proper winger in the summer, just a thought.

Something to do with Jones being injury prone should be your tag line. I mean Jesus you've said it constantly the last few days.

I don't think this is the end of Smalling at all, he's our most experienced CB and our best one over the course of the last 3 years.

Jones needs to prove his fitness, and Rojo needs to prove this is more than a purple patch for him, plus they've both had the benefit of playing with Carrick in front of them and the whole team playing well.
We haven't seen them truly tested while the team were struggling like Smalling, Blind & Bailly did at the start of the season.

Our central defence is playing well at the moment but no idea how long that will last. This reminds me of Heinze and Evra, I loved Heinze and couldn't understand why we were buying Evra when we already had a top quality LB. Evra came in and after he settled the rest is history.

Its stupid to get rid of Smalling. He's the 2nd best CB we've got + he provides inches in the defence.
I don't mean he's in trouble in that he will be sold. But, he faces a big ask getting his XI spot back.

You'd be right if we were struggling for cash. But we are not.

Which is fair enough TBH. We haven't had a stable defence for the past 3 years. Its only fair for the club to take some serious action on that

Mourinho has a good track record with defenders. If we're paying 38m, he will probably be a starter next to Bailly.

What I'm hoping too. As much as I've loved seeing Jones and Rojo form a solid partnership the past few games, does anyone really expect it to last?

Smalling seems to be out of favour as well. It's good that we're being proactive in the January market for once.

Can any Swedish/Portugese following poster give their unbias thoughts?

Looking promising. If this does get completed, then this is looking more and more like a Mourinho side.

Stacked defensively and extremely difficult to score against first and foremost. It'll give us a solid foundation to build from the back. No more conceding stupid goals. Think of the days of Terry-Carvalho at the back. They were virtually impenetrable.

Unfortunately it doesn't solve our problem of our lack of pace and goals from the other side of the pitch, but I'm confident in Mourinho to address that next. Finally, I'm guessing we'll also be in the market for a Carrick replacement.

This is just the start. Things are looking good.

Have the "he's big, strong, fast, hard, great on the ball, threat at set-pieces, world-class potential, best defender in the world" posts popped up yet?

I'd trust Jose when it comes to defenders. He has always been exceptional at judging them.

I hold my hands up and say I know absolutely nothing about this guy nor have I heard of him. Having said that, it was the same when we were linked with Bailly.

Mourinho has an excellent transfer record so I just have to trust him.

The obligatory YT video doesnt instill me with much excitement, continually out of position and almost always a nats Traveller away from the forward getting past him, with the quality of forward in the PL he will be ripped a new 'un every week.

That said, Jose knows his centre halves.

Really weird transfer, if he any good? I don't know if we need another CB, but if we did I expected someone more commanding and experienced.

Ahh he plays LCB, that makes more sense. We only really have Rojo and Blind who are comfortable on the left side. Bailly/Smalling are much better on the right.

Don't really understand this transfer.

That said I trust mourinho and his judgement, he's obviously seen something he likes about this guy and that's good enough for me.

He has been quite erratic as of late. I said here before he rarely commits a mistake... Well, in a few weeks he doubled the amount of what he had committed over the last year and a half. In Portugal fans have attributed such bad phase to the transfer rumours.

Anyway, my opinion about him didn't change and I've expressed it in the first pages of this topic. Best central defender in the league imo

I'm more than willing to trust Mourinho on this, depite their form I don't think Rojo and Jones can keep it up forever and Smalling had a bit of a shaky start to the season so it remains to be seen if he can recapture last season's form, a young CB with a high ceiling is always welcome, seems quite physically imposing too and a lack of yellow cards means he must be doing something right, I'm all for this transfer.

I'm unbiased in my opinion since i rate Semedo as a potential world class right back. Although, at the moment, he wouldn't be an upgrade on Valencia. Maybe after 1 season.

About Lindelof though. He is a good, solid center back. There are other defenders with more pace, technique and aerial prowess for much less money but he has one good thing on his side, which is his mindset. Cool headed and when he does a mistake it's not due to a lack of focus.

He is having a poor season compared to previous one but, then again, the Portuguese league is a joke most of the time so you can't really properly evaluate a player (see Sanchez). Having said that and trusting José's avail, i don't believe he will be ready for the first team this season.
