Because several pre-season games are enough to make a judgment on new player, right? :wenger:

It's not like Vidić and Evra needed months to integrate into team properly.

Have we ever had a signing have such a bad preseason? Only way is up I guess

Anyone has a replay of the tackle? I missed it but from what everyone is saying + commentators, it was a sight to behold.

It's not an adjustment issue. He's just average. From time to time, you're bound to have a misstep in the recruitment process.

Tuanzebe would have controlled that ball and dummied it back into play.

I don't think he's been that bad in preseason but that was a pretty bad tackle. I don't think it foreshadows anything though. Just him being an idiot, possibly due to the lax nature of preseason.

It's nothing to do with settling in or anything. You just don't go in that wildly ever... however we can only judge how well he settles in once the pl begins and we see how he fares.

You guys jumped on Stones the instant he makes a mistake but defend Lindelöf despite being awful so far in pre-season. To think I was in favor of signing this guy for a reasonable price.

Not writing him off but He is a completely pointless buy when you think about it and I Still don't see why we signed him,

I know smalling and jones get a fair bit of hate but at the end of the day we had a good defensive record last season, defence should be the least of our priorities it's our attack and midfield that need a boost.

we only conceded 29 which is second best behind spurs. We've also got blind, tuanzabe and TFM that could drop into centre back if needed so Spending £35+ million on lindalof wasn't necessary at all tbh especially when there's other positions needing upgrades much more.

I'd rather we just saved the 35 million and put it in a pot for somebody else in another position.

At 7.30 this morning whilst half asleep I wasn't wrong.

Utterly pointless signing and waste of money. Prepared to give him time but he looks very average to me

The funny thing he was in the right place. He could either have followed the players run or made a sliding tackle. Instead he just ran into him. Swede

The cappers are still waiting for him to make the tackle.

He's a bag of nerves.

It's understandable.

You start a new job and inevitably you do shit for a while. That's all.

Keane was the better option, cheaper and a United lad, never understood the decision to not go for him

Wrong then and wrong now. Smalling and Jones have poor injury records, and Rojo could be out till Jan. That doesn't leave us with much cover. Have you forgotten our CB crisis at the end of last season? A CB was a necessary purchase.

Whether he's worth the money or not how can you judge based on preseason?

He's young, new team, it's pre season, will need time to adjust and everything. Give him that time

It's a bit worrying that his standout quality was meant to be ability on the ball but he hasn't shown any of that at all.

Operative words there being so far and in pre-season. Stones had an awful season at Everton and went on to be just as much of a mess for City. If Lindelof is doing things like this 2 months from now I don't think you'll see that much defending for him.

I can judge it because he's been at error for every goal we've conceded when he's on the pitch. We have TFM, tuanzabe and blind that can fill in at centreback comfortably.

That's Bailly, smalling, blind, jones, tuanzabe, TFM as centreback options until rojo is fit, they're more than enough.

He's been very disappointing but I don't put much stock in pre-season. I think he'll need a bit of time to adjust but he's young and talented, he just needs to be comfortable and confident in his new team.

That being said, what an awful tackle. I'm surprised he didn't get a straight red for it, given Valencia was sent off for something similar.

Sorry but there's no defending that tackle.

You shouldn't need time to adjust to a new team to not make that 'challenge'

Apart from one really bad moment I dont remember him doing anything wrong against City?

That foul for the penalty though, absolute shocker. Boris Johnson would be proud of that tackle. Hope it's just a pre season/new club brain fart.

At least with Blind, Smalling, Jones and Tuanzebe we'll have plenty of options and cover.

Id rather have someone who is a natural CB rather than shoehorning other players in. Jose said he's a fan of specialists over utility players.

Bonucci went to Milan for the same money... just sayin'.

Mourinho knows his onions when it comes to defenders but he hasn't exactly filled us with confidence so far.

Not overly fussed about preseason performance. We've had average players look great during preseason and great players look average.

Hopefully he's an upgrade on the two sick notes.

No there isnt. But people make mistakes, including footballers. It's just a waiting game, to see how he beds in. I'll judge him in 18 months.

But if I was Jose I'd not sell Smalling or Jones now as they're better options right now.

It's only preseason, we can afford to give him time to settle. In saying that he hasn't looked good tbh.

Fair point really, Bailly is a sure-fire starter and both Rojo & Jones looked good last year when fit; I'm not a huge fan of Smalling but he was good season before last (even if a bit over-rated I feel, gets away with a lot of shirt-pulling and holding), and then Tuanzebe impressed towards the end of the season and there's the likes of TFM, Blind and even Darmian who can cover in a worst case scenario.

Like you say, probably bigger problems to fix and that £31m could have probably been better spent elsewhere, maybe than United wouldn't be pinching pennies for another winger or proper DM if they had a bit more left in the transfer kitty.

I agree with the guy that said Keane should have been the one signed as well if United had to sign a CB - cheaper, homegrown lad who knows the club, more experienced and had proven himself in the PL against better teams/strikers than Lindelof had faced week-in, week-out. I'm assuming Mourinho sees more potential in Lindelof, but regardless it was always a far, far riskier signing.

Lindelof isnt really a specialist either. He isnt that good of a natural defender but quite a modern defender with a decent skill range on the ball.

That's talking about skill set and not position. I'm aware Lindelof can also operate as a fullback, but I'm sure he was bought with the intention to play CB almost predominantly. He is meant to be good distributor of the ball which we arguably lack at the back apart from possibly Blind.
