First good performance - very pleased to see him finally play with conviction and confidence. On the ball his touch looked more secure and he was passing with purpose. Defensively loved that big tackle and generally he wasn’t at fault for any major incidents that I can recall so a good step forward.

Better. Still a bit rubbish but it's progress. Murray may not be world class but he's a tough competitor and Lindelof didn't get shown up.

Needs to look up more when on the ball as he's capable of a good long pass. Several times Lukaku had made great runs that Lindelof's either ignored or didn't see.

Don't think that was a good tackle. If you put one leg up like this you can't complain if a foul is called despite getting the ball.

It's generally a thing with him he doesn't seem to have the best control of his body.

He want to be fouled in case the Brighton player somehow still get the ball because he's the last defender. He takes the ball and the player down in case. So, really, it's a great tackle.

So first he is criticised for being to weak and not playing hard enough. And when he proceeds to put the opposition in their place by playing more physical he is criticised for that?

He was my motm. Perhaps he got that mostly because everyone else was subpar but he had a solid performance imo. Esp considering his previous games, this was a step in the right direction and will likely improve his confidence. He will get there!

His left leg is very high. It's not putting the opposition in his place. It's reckless and on another day with a different ref it could go another's way. Just like Rojo was criticized last season for his tackles despite not getting sent off for them. It's not even a criticism. It just isn't a good tackle.

I think what i am looking for in him is a defender who will bring the ball out of defense. Right now he isnt doing that. As a defender that performance was what you would expect, nothing special just decent but he just dint contribute in attacking sense for which he has been brought in.

Feck me, there is literally no comparison between Rojo's tackles last season and that one today.

Very good performance from him. Looked more confident and got into the situations well. Seem to have stepped up to the pace of the premier league a bit more today. Second best player today after Young.

Sometimes it's just baffling to read comments in here. It's like people are seven years old or maybe it's only the ones that never played origanized football in a proper club that write these utterly baffling comments. Rojos tackles last year were, some of them, clearly red card tackles that would put his team in problems if the referees would give him the well deserved red card. He got away several times. This was something completely different. There's no defender, let me repeat that, no defender, that plays or has played in Premier league that would regard that as a bad tackle.
As the last defender, with another Brighton player running past the rest of the United players, you have take some precautions which he did without risking a redcard.

Thought he was fine. Loved his solid tackle late on in the game.

What I don't get is why Jose doesn't try him on the left of the centre backs. I'm pretty sure he played there for Benfica, and sometimes plays there for Sweden.

I've played at a high level of football thank you very much.

His left leg is half way up Knockaert's leg. It isn't a good tackle. Nowhere did I say they were as bad as Rojo's anyway. Nonetheless its a tackle that in no way should be called great.

Good solid performance today. He didn’t look as nervous as the first few games played.

Good positive progress for a young talented central defender.

It isn't good but it isn't bad either. Its a standard 50/50. He went in with a leading leg and kept his studs down. He has to make sure he wins the ball but assuming he does no ref is giving anything serious for that.

Then you know that it's a good thing that he took the player down. Because if he wouldn't and the ball went to another Brighton player who could serve the first one, well then it's a problem for Lindelof and United. He did that without risking a red card. That's what makes it a great and smart tackle. He couldn't stay where he was either because there was another Brighton player running past the United defense. Thank you very much.

PS. You don't need to have played high level football to know these things but most people that has know that you can't judge a tackle out of context.

Is everyone ignoring the fact his foot only went "high" after the impact with the ball?

Not seen the game but that tackle says it all, had the balls to go in for it, got it. Says a lot about him

Just like Maradona never scored an important world cup goal against England?

That's what you're saying right? If it wasn't technically perfect/legal then it was bad regardless of effectiveness?

Don't remember any Argentinians complaining, or the French with Henry for that matter...

He did it, it worked, good tackle.

Sorry but the year 7 A team isn’t really that high a level.

Was there today at the SAF end and out of the two Smalling was more solid. Lindelöf played well all things considered but the MOTM is a bit of a surprise. Just by the fact that he didn’t make any fatal errors it appears (so doing his day job) it’s amazed people enough to give him the MOTM. He’s like the Darmian version of a CB. I honestly don’t recall him ever winning one header against Murray. Murray more often than not was able to either flick it on or bring it down.

But it’s pleasing to see he had a decentish game. Hope it continues.

Re Smalling apart from that very first misplaced pass in the first few seconds of the game he had a good game.

Wasn't the problem of today's game and perhaps there's a chance he'll be a good defender in the end, maybe in couple of years of continuous focus.

Both did well though. Overall this season we have defended very well and our central defenders are the best part of the team. Many other areas we need to improve on in the way we play.

I agree though that I don't think he got amazing potential unlike say a Bailly. Don't think that effect his performance today though.

I think both he and Smalling did well against a really decent side

super crunching tackle which seemed to give us a lift

was really impressed by Brighton and if there was a United player who struggled I thought it was Matic who looked sluggish

His leg being half way up the other guys leg is exactly why it's a good tackle, surely? He's not really the last man, but if that ball gets past him we're in trouble. Taking the man and the ball in this situation is the smart thing to do.

He is like the new Evans, whom I always liked! He'll do fine against weaker opposition.

Had a good game with no major mistakes. Need to step in front of his man more often rather than stuck at back. Hopefully can push on from here as December is coming up.
