What did the scouts see here? It must have been something because he was scouted over and over again.

Vidic did. Forlan did. Evra did.

Not all of those are relevant but Lindelof has the attributes. He's not exactly wrapping them all up and putting a bow on them at the moment though.

New country, new language, new home, new team mates. None of these should have an absolute impact on the basic things he's getting wrong but he needs to be given time.

If we'd made him a starter and had lost games already it would be a concern.

He cost in the same region as Sakho let's not forget. We can cut him some slack.
I wouldn't say forlan adjusted 100%, he did get sold after all.

It doesn't really matter that he didn't have the best of games against Burton, because he's performed better in the past against far more illustrious opponents at domestic and international level.

That's not to say that he will necessarily make the step up at United, but happy to give him time for now.

If you want a good comparison, look at Holding from Arsenal. They're in the same bracket: inadequate.

Particularly for English football.

Cant share off the feeling that he was signed with 3 at back formation in mind, but Jose abandoned that idea when we couldn't sign Perisic and because we started the season on fire with the currently formation.

He'd probably be 4th or 5th in pecking order ones Rojo is back and that is good for us because we wont have to rely on him in a difficult game, he isn't ready for it yet. But being so down the line in pecking order is probably not good for him individually as he need game time to improve, which isn't easy to get for him, at least this season.

Absolute jokers on here with the crap that people come out with sometimes. The lads just arrived and people have ended his career here already which is another level of stupidity. Jose's has said that this lads potential is high, so why we not trusting his judgement when he's brilliant at spotting defenders. I've watched him last season and he's a very classy player with the technical ability to play in midfield. He's going to be brill for us once he understands the PL better which we know takes time. Ok yesterday a couple of short passes but come on except Bailly.... Rojo, Smalling, Jones and Blind have been here considerable longer but still have their moments. Shall we at least give the lad a couple of seasons given he's only 23....

Everyone makes mistakes but Lindelof just looks poor. He is very poor one on one with an attacker, is poor in the air and looks like a red card or penalty waiting to happen. Compared with the CB Chelsea purchased or Spurs or looking at Laporte, Jonathan Tah, Kostas Manolas or any number of CBs in Europe Lindelof just looks poor. I understand taking time to settle but he simply doesn't even look like a decent defender let alone a great one. Imagine if we had signed a first-team defender instead of Lindelof then we wouldn't have to rely so much on Jones and Smalling and instead one of them could have been sold.

I don't see any talent whatsoever. His defending is hopeless, doesn't know what is around him, can't head the ball, lacks pace, basically everything. He can't pass very well either. This all smells like depay again, a player from a lousy league that is no where near the standards required. If he can't even cope with the typical championship big centre forward, wait till he meets proper big Premier league strikers who have much better technique and first touch.

Lets not fall into the whole give him time let him have it easy for a while. Currently he is probably only good enough for the reserves. He should get the Fellaini treatment to toughen him up too. If he figures it out we can all eat our words and praise him. If not out he goes, we can't afford to carry junk in our team

Indeed. But then we shouldn't be surprised. A lot of posters on here didn't want Matic. A lot thought Schneiderlin would be a great signing. Basically fans don't really know much about the game. Doesn't mean they're wrong in this case, but it's too early to judge a young defender coming into a different country, as you say.

Point very well made, especially regarding Matic. Seems like the majority where against his signing yet he's now probably our most important player. You'd think people here would start to question whether they have a clue but no, let's just get to our next target.

He'll need more time that we all exptected. I agree that Tuanzebe looks the better player too

I didn't even think he was that bad to be honest, Some serious over reactions in here. Cannot write him off already, He has played 3 games where he has had breaks inbetween so he hasn't even had a run of games yet.

When Rojo comes back, does that leave him 4th choice CB? Quite possibly. I'm of the agreement we should of used the money towards a winger or LB but give the man a chance. He wasn't exactly a quick starter at Benfica either and he came good.

I see this guy suffers Fellaini's fate now. Caf made up their mind already eh?

I didn´t want to start a total beating of him yesterday but I feel that his heading ability is as poor as any player in the squad or there about. He just doesn´t win headers and times his jumps extremely badly. That aside he didn´t have a terrible game at all, had a few shocking passes but was ok for most of the time but that being against a very poor side.. He will need time but like Rojo he could still become good.

Yup, agree that for this height he's doing shit so far with his heading, one dodgy moment that I recall from yesterday was when there was some high ball and he turned the wrong way and lost the man with the ball, that's about it. You'd think he pulled off another Real Madrid by the looks of this thread though.

He looks fine until the ball goes in the air.

Don't trust him yet but he has good moments, then a few wobbles. Early days yet though of course.

He definitely seems the modern defender in the sense he can play well, but isn't that brilliant at defending. If we could somehow fuse him and Smalling together we'd have a hell of a player

I want my defenders to be able to defend. Lindelof has not shown so far he can defend. Simple as that. Maybe a CDM position would suit him better.

I'll hold my hands up, I was one of those people. I'm happy to wait and see when it comes to Lindelof, with the team on a flier at the moment it's the ideal opportunity to give him some minutes here and there to build up his confidence.

No way. A poor defender wont make a good DM. Just compare him to Matic. If he's not good enough (well, it's too early to say) then he will never become a starter, simply as that

Do you fans actually believe he played like this in Benfica and still was bought to United? :wenger:

Spoiler alert: Mourinho would obviously not buy Lindelof if he played like this in Benfica.

You guys need to start think.

I was not here when we bought De Gea. I guess this place would have been similar believing all the nonsense that the media put out about him in his first season.

His gf has said on a podcast that the prices of renting a directors box is disgusting, but you're seen as a loser if you don't.

Not surprising at all, footballers are some of the most vain people on earth.

You do realize it's much easier to stand out (and perform at a higher level) in a team in Portugal that's been the champions four years in a row than it is in a team in one of the toughest and hardest league in the world, right?

Spoiler alert: So ofcourse he didn't play this bad in Portugal.

I do however think he'll come good, eventually.

Wow. That first half...

He looked better in the second half but Burton weren't pressing us at all. I do think he looks more comfortable in a back 3, for whatever reason.

I'm still wondering about this signing, because weren't we scouting him as a potential fullback in January? I know his primary position is CB but the reports I saw didn't make it look like we were interested in him for that position.

What's this about? Do players sit in boxes when they're not in the match day squad?

Main reason why I'm hopeful despite his run of dubious performances is Rojo. He looked like crap since he got here until last season where he finally showed his potential. I think the same can happen with Lindleof if we give him time. Besides, we are in no rush. We have 4 very good CB's to keep us satisfied in the meantime.

I don't think it's remotely similar. Rojo at least showed that he was determined, knew how to tackle even if he mis-timed some of them. He is also pretty athletic and is at least as good with the ball as the Swede. With Lindelöf, I can see no standout qualities. Smalling was the superior passer yesterday, and defender. Lindelöf seems average or below average at most things. Rojo always showed he was a warrior and the he enjoyed going into tackles.

Friends and family can sit in vip box, special area for a price. They are treated well, have a waiter on stand-by for whatever they want etc. Get food and drinks and get to see the match from their own private box.
It is ridiculously priced as players are nowadays earning ridiculous weekly wages. No surprise there.

I was not here when we bought De Gea. I guess this place would have been similar believing all the nonsense that the media put out about him in his first season.

David de Gea displayed exceptional physical qualities and could actually prevent the ball from going in amidst a bunch of mistakes ( mitigated by roughshod opposition actually fouling him on crosses and aerial balls coming in from the corner flag ).

Lindelof, not so much.

Can talk about mentality all you want, that's just a damning factor as any other in the list. You can't be a mental lilliputian at Old Trafford. Much better players than him wilted under the pressure of playing at a big club and were expulsed: Riquelme.

Semedo was the full back and Lindelöf the CB that José wanted.

One positive I did take from his performance last night is that he was vocal at times and trying to direct others.

His overall performance though wasn't good, particularly when dealing with crosses. He needs to be more aggressive and attack the crosses

feck me, Its like someone being headhunted for a job, starting in the morning and sacked by the afternoon. Whatever some people do for a living on here, they are wasted. They need to email the club and say feck those scouts, coaches and Jose's assessment of players over watching them over a season, they can make a better assessment after 3 games of any player......
