Varane to retire from international football

He'll be 33 in the next World Cup... a bit odd decision if everything is fine

Was just reading broad points on Reddit. The Zidane fiasco a few weeks ago seems to have pissed a lot of people off while Varane and Zidane are reportedly really close

There isn't really a Zidane fiasco in the sense that Deschamps was always the favorite, he already had an extension offer that he decided to not take until the World Cup. The issues with the FA are a bit bigger and not linked to Zidane, Le Graet is accused of hiding crimes that he knew about, he is also accused of corruption, the issue is that until he is found guilty the FA can't get rid of him and he refuses to resign. He will likely be ousted by the Ministry of Sports at some point but until then he is a nuisance for everyone.

That's a shame for France. He is one of the best around and is at the right age, experience etc.

Maybe he is thinking what he wants to do aside from football. I think we will see more players retiring early... they are mega-rich, young, fit and healthy and probably have many other interests.

Not sure why people think this is strange. King Eric retired from football all together aged 30.. probably a family decison.

Good news, and understandable. He won the world cup and played in another final. This could probably prolong his career.

Scholes too at 29, ended up playing his best football for us after. Shearer retired at a similar age too IIRC.

A shame for the player, so close to 100 caps, but its good news for us.

He will more than likely come back at some stage. He's only 29. If France need him for Euro 24 and ask him back for eg. he will probably return. It's good news for Utd that he's not going to play any friendlies or qualifiers in the foreseeable future though.

Fantastic. He's been immense this season, hopefully we'll get 3-4 more good years of him alongside Martinez now.

A little concerning at 29 (if you take it as an indicator of his injury resistance / general physical state).

Hopefully it's more a combination of acknowledging it'll prolong his high level club career, and France team factors (e.g. expectation that there's going to be a preference to use younger CBs coming through going forward/etc).

Certainly hoping it means he's going to available for us a lot more, at a higher level, for many years to come!

Hope this was after a conversation with the club and our higher ups. There should be some type of incentive for a player to do this, benefits the club massively.

He retired too early too soon, but thats only good news to us as he will now only focus on club football.

Good decision hopefully we'll reap the benefits.

It's great news for United but I'm wondering why he would retire from international football when he's still relatively at a good age.

Won the World Cup and Nations League, played another World Cup final and Euros final. All left would be a Euros win but he’s achieved almost everything there is with France, could understand if he lacked motivation to go through it all again at a major tournament.

Got to be good news for us. Makes a change that one of our important players actually puts club and health before country. He should get some good rest breaks going forward and hopefully it will prolong his playing career.

Very wise decision, he could have easily seen off another WC. Given the amount of talent the French produces, young players can take his spot in NT.

thats great news for Utd, this could really prolong his career at the top level. He is still only 29 and still should have at least another 4 years at the top level if he can stay fit (ish).

Clearly a pessimistic take but I’d be worried that he thinks his body can’t cope, and he’ll be like Rio towards the end, a shell of himself and dealing with chronic pain…it would be cruel to see him get into the swing of things in Ten Hag’s first year and then fade away into medical obscurity.

its great news for United that he won't put any extra wear and tear on his body playing extra matches and extra training.....we'll have him just for us during the prime years of his career

Great news but I reckon he'll be back in the set up at some stage.

Euros runner medal, Euros winner medal, World Cup runner-up medal, World Cup winner medal.

Not bad

For some reason I've always thought he was at least 31. Checked today after the news broke and he's only 29!

Seems a bit young to retire from international football but it's good news for United.

If we could get another 3/4 years out of him at his current level, I'd be more than happy.

Good news for us but he should play at least the next Euros where France are favourites.

I really want him as United captain.

And to get his shirt #.

Yeah I can understand the concerns but going to enjoy him playing at his prime and not worry about him declining. This will definitely benefit us that he won't be going on international breaks.

Bet he's been talking to Paul Scholes
