Raphaël Varane could announce his international retirement. At 29, he has worn the Blues jersey 93 times.

Raphaël Varane will indeed retire from international football, as revealed by the Parisian and confirmed by RMC Sport.

A shame for the player, so close to 100 caps, but its good news for us.

His body probably can’t cope. Best way to preserve some extra years and hopefully a few Prem titles.

I reckon if the Euros were this year he'd probably have given it that and then left but with how injury prone he is it's probably the best decision to maximise his United career (if it's personal decision due to that and not classic French nonsense).

Seems a bit weird when he would likely be the captain for the next few years.

It could be because of his fitness issues or he had enough of Deschamps.

The French NT has always been a dramatic shitshow. At this stage of his career and the amount of trophies he’s won, man probably just want to enjoy his football.

Thank feck for that. We desperately need him to stay fit.

Apparently some trouble behind the scenes
Source? Might explain it but I just see it as a 29 year old who has 93 caps calling it a day after he has won a few trophies with his nation and lost another one in dramatic fashion.

Definitely good news for us, should help with all the niggling injuries he gets.

He's up there with Stam, Vidic and Rio as the best defenders i've seen play for this club. Hopefully he wins the league as well before he leaves.

Was just reading broad points on Reddit. The Zidane fiasco a few weeks ago seems to have pissed a lot of people off while Varane and Zidane are reportedly really close

All I know is that there is a discussion for the next captain and there are allegations of sexual/racial misconduct with highly placed individual inside the french FA.
Maybe Varane is just tired of this nauseating context

Probably not easy decision to make, while still being top defender in every league and competition he played.

Just a bit more luck with injuries and he'll play to 35 at least. This decision could be key.

Everything around the French national side always seems like a massive soap opera.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's back in the side in a couple of years after whatever drama it probably is has subsided.

Nice, just in time for the March break. Shame for France but better he's fit for us

Bit surprised as I thought he'd like to have another try to win Euros in 2024, but I guess he his body can't take playing all the time anymore. Good for us, hopefully Varane has another 3-4 years at the top.

Can only be good for United. World class player with a world glass body. He is brittle. He seems to be pretty happy currently at United and this will hopefully contribute to him spending less time injured and more time available for first team selection.

I’m sure there must be some other factors in his decision too but definitely positive for United. Always find it refreshing when top players decide to withdraw from international duties at an earlier age.

Smart decision. He will now get some 2 week recovery periods built in here which is exactly what his body needs.

It's young to retire from int football and I wouldn't be surprised if he changes his mind when the tourneys roll around. Still, in the meantime it's great news for utd

He would have won another world cup were if not for the FIFA directive of handing the thing to Messi. He can now concentrate on what matters anyway.

qu'est que c'est behind the scenes troubles??

This is brilliant news for Utd.

He seems really happy here, I wonder if that has played a part in his decision?

Although a loss for the French NT, they do have Upamecano, Konate, Saliba and probably one or two more decent players in the CB pool
