Are you in favour of VAR in the PL?

It is?
Its because a linesman is told to allow VAR to look at close offsides son is told to keep his flag down.
The linesman isn't physic so doesn't know when an assist is coning or if its 10 passes before the goal. Its a sensible conprimse to keep it in phase of play of a goal or there could be even more stoppages.

I'm not sure I understand your point. I just think the rules have to make it clear or soon before we know VAR could be used to cancel goals because of offsides that happened a minute before.

Aye, if you celebrate, it's a goal. Whether it was offside or never went in. A celebration is a celebration and it's what the games all about.

Two crap attempts at sarcasm. It’s the delay of the decision while the players are releasing that energy and emotion. Like I said they’re not robots, it’s happened two days in a row now the other team has gone down the other end and scored. Just a coincidence though.

"The starting point for a phase of play that leads to a goal or penalty incident will be limited to the immediate phase and not necessarily go back to when the attacking team gained possession. Other factors for consideration will be the ability of the defence to reset and the momentum of the attack."

From the PL website.

Same happens in cricket. Big appeal, finger goes up, players go crazy. Batsman reviews. Umpires decision overturned. You go again.

That's incredibly vague, though. Just goes to show that it is way too selective and random a system.

The keeper made a save and a few defenders touched the ball between that offside and goal.
Everything is so wide open to interpretation I think the refs are making it up as they go along.

And then you get all this drama over offsides and yesterday Barnes got hacked down in the penalty box, blatant pen and var was nowhere to be seen.

So?
They’re two different sports, I wish people would stop comparing football to cricket and bloody tennis

Stop wasting energy on illegal goals then. Not really a problem. Frankly couldn't give a shit about them being emotionally drained, I want the correct calls. Calls are based on the rules of the game, not the emotional output of players and fans.

The sport might be different but the situation is the same. A big release of emotion.

The rules are the rules. VAR just enforces them in a way that is far more reliable than having humans get a single look in real time.

Illegal? Ha!
So how far back can an offside be to be a correct call? Shall I not celebrate now Untill the other team kick off to be sure the goal is to stand, save my energy, that sounds great fun.

People are so caught up in illegal goals and correct decisions as if it’s an exact science and the people running the VAR don’t even know what’s going on yet. It’s a massive joke.
That Barnes penalty incident yesterday that wasn’t given is sure making the sport fairer using VAR, don’t you agree.

I wish people would stop claiming the rules of the game should be thrown out the window because you're going to be too emotionally drained.
Again, ffs. I was on about the players to start with. Too busy trying to make condescending sarcasm posts to actually read what is written

This. Like the NFL has a certain amount of challenges so should Var in the PL
Or a hybrid system. Goals are reviewed all the time. Each time can then have 3 additional reviews of incidents that are not goals. (penalty shouts, red cards etc)

You'll get no argument from me on how VAR is working on subjective calls like that. The PL's hands off approach on subjective calls is stupid beyond belief.

Thanks for the info. Seems painfully subjective though.

Anyone else actually considering giving up on football until they fix it? Seen two games ruined by VAR this weekend and I can't really be arsed anymore.

Nah don’t do that. Just watch it with no emotion and just enjoy the hundred percent correct calls (not really correct) and ensuring the right teams wins fairly every match as suggested in here.

Emotion is over rated

I don't get why you feel you can't celebrate?

If the last half decade of watching us play hasn't seen people give up on football then I doubt a few weeks of VAR will manage it. :(

It was just a play on a suggestion by @limerickcitykid to not waste my energy celebrating illegal goals, as if I know they’re illegal when something had happened 30 seconds before a goal was scored.

And honestly, these days United don’t score all that much so it doesn’t effect us, I obviously cheer when we score and then sit in an anxious wait. I do check my excitement when watching other teams I’m rooting for though when a goal goes in. Quite simple really

It won't be long until fans and players learn to wait for an eventual VAR review before celebrating. It's gonna be a hoot.
That's not answering the question. Celebrations have not stopped in all other sports that use a review type system. I can't see football being any different.

The major difference that people seem to be missing when they compare football to NFL/cricket/tennis is that those are stop-start games whereas football is supposed to be a free-flowing game. If you take that away, you take away the spirit of the game.

Yes, being offside is illegal in the rules of the game. Do I need to teach you basic rules?

It can be called back to anything happening in that play. Once again, do I need to teach you the rules? Look this shit up before losing your shit about emotional energy.

I don't care when you celebrate.

People are so caught up in emotional stress that they think the rules should be thrown out because they celebrated. Mount was offside, I don't give a shit if you celebrated, he was offside. The rules don't give a shit if you celebrated either and nor should they. Don't want it to be called back? Don't go offside then.

VAR is almost exclusively used when the game has already stopped.

Posters who say offside is offside should take into aspect the emotional aspects of the low scoring nature of football. It can suck the life out of a team and their fans. Today's Chelsea goal the player was clearly offside and the linesman should have flagged to prevent this unnecessary drama.

 Seems like you can’t help yourself. Never mind.

Anyway, not sure if you’ve still got the game post mortem on, they showed a similar goal that Liverpool have scored that wasn’t given offside. There is absolutely no consistency. That’s my main issue.

You bang on about rules and fairness but VAR is certainly not providing that. As we keep seeing each week.

Because he is an idiot who thinks Chelsea should be given a goal because they were so emotionally invested in it and drained all their energy and emotion in celebrating the goal so it shouldn't matter that it was offside.

Nice, at no point have I said that.

I don't know why people are so upset with Chelsea's goal being called off. The linesman should've raised his flag and called Mount offside because he was offside.

Linesman missed it, and therefore technology intervened to correct the wrong call. What's the fecking problem? That "too much time passed before the goal was scored"? The goal should've never been bloody scored in the first place because the linesman should've seen that Mount was offside.

Yes, I can't help myself laughing at the idiocy of thinking players emotional draining from celebrations are at all relevant to the rules of the game.

Liverpool last year had something very similar, I think it should have been allowed as there was more than three times this play could have been corrected, hell the ball bounced of a Liverpool player..

The problem is VAR is too selective at this point. What if a team gets a free kick and in the buildup to it there is an offside. They score from the free kick and it stands as I don't think VAR checks in this case because it's a different phase of play.

Also they check for millimeters of offside with a tech that needs to have a margin of error and let blindingly obvious penalties where a defender wrestles an attacker to the ground slip through its fingers.

They might think they are breaking us in gently - probably wittering on about a ''roll-out'' behind the scenes. Rather than go all-in at the start & then start pulling stuff out.

I can't believe they think this is all great, despite what their bullshit summary bulletins are saying.

And in a way, I sometimes feel like we're all being had, the Premier League gravy-train doesn't care what we are arguing about as long as it's provoking some discussion. Their first priority is not to spoil that, probably.

I don't know quite what my actual point is here, obviously.

I think all we've established is that offsides are difficult. Again, I might be imagining this, but there seem to be fewer players wandering around offside in the hope that they will be 'next-phased' back onside - again related to the difficulty of the rule to enforce in real time by humans.

The subjective stuff, they don't want to know about - I think that is fairly established too. Sarcastically, I'm now going to say that paragraph on the offside reset looks pretty subjective, though.

The evolution is a fair point, but I hope it doesn't take TOO long.

None of which has to do with thinking calls should be based on the emotional drainage of players celebrations.

The ball bounced off of a Liverpool player, so what? That isn't a new phase of play. Mount's offside allowed them to put the ball into the box, the ball never left the box again and they scored. All the same phase of play.

Liverpool's goal came over 3 crosses later. Whether you want to argue that is still the same phase, go ahead. It is of no relevance to the discussion of emotionally draining celebrations mattering though. Keita's goal wouldn't be allowed over Azpi's because he managed to exert an extraordinary amount of emotion during his celebration making it legal.
