You can read the OPs of those threads for more details but the gist of it is:

“Which unlikely player will prove themselves to fans this season?”

So, many moons ago I predicted that Valencia would be a brilliant player for us at right back when he was a source of ridicule for us at right back.

He went on to be a brilliant player for us at right back and I try to mention it as often as possible.

This year’s Valencia is going to be Scott McTominay. He’s going to develop into a key player for us this year. Not only working his arse off defensively but beginning to stamp his authority on the ball too.

Any other predictions? Slim picking to be fair.

My pick for 23/24 is Jadon Sancho.

I think with Onana instigating faster transitions and a higher line along with Rashford/Hojberg playing through the centre he’s going to surprise a lot of people this year.

Big year this year you could say.

I don’t think you forgot last year, @Pexbo, as I’m adamant I chose Sancho myself this time last year. Or maybe it was in a different thread… who knows! But I do remember plumping for Sancho all the same. :(

EDIT: Found it:
Apart from those already mentioned, I expect Sancho to go up a level or two over the next few months. I can see him reach 10+ goals and 10+ assists in the league come May.

Hopefully this year!

Antony.

I feel incredibly confident about it too. It's wild to me that it would even qualify as an 'unlikely' choice, but go to his thread and all you'll see is griping.
  • His ability to dribble past players both from standing and at pace will come good once he has a #9 running ahead of him - he won't have to keep turning back, slowing down and playing for time. He'll be able to go for the jugular more.
  • With a #9 who knows how to make runs, he'll have the option when he cuts inside of the cute reverse through-ball, instead of always having to take the shot. If you can do both, it's very hard to stop, no matter how good the defence.
  • Those curlers will start to go in.

Rashford. The burden of goal scoring will once again fall on his shoulders, and he'll carry us.

I’m confused. When was Valencia a brilliant RB?

If Sancho gets the oppertunites and finds his form he is more than capable of being one of the best players in the league, so he could be a dark horse for it but I think I’ll go Bruno as if we get that 9 to create the space for he and Mount I expect him to be banging in the goals along with Mount.

Antony also a good shout. He’s one of those players like Rashford and Sancho that if it clicks they could do scary things. Ugh suppose there is also the walking sick note that is Martial. Martial FC ready for one last ride.

This is what's getting me most excited for the new season. If a dynamic #9 comes in - even one whose goalscoring isn't a sure thing, like Hojlund - the conditions are in place for any of those three to thrive.

If two of them do, we might challenge for the league. If all three of them do, we could even be in with a hope of winning it.

Sancho but I'm living in the hope he finally turns it around. I'm still convinced there is a good player there but if we can get more players in on his wavelength we should see a rejuvenated version. I'm kind of pinning my hopes on him working well with Mount and Hojlund.

I’d have probably picked Sancho last year so … fool me once and all that. I’d pick him again but then I’d be agreeing with Pexbo so that’s a horrible predicament.

I’ll go with AWB just for the ehh why not. Reckon he could completely displace Dalot and cement himself in the team permanently if he keeps up some of his end of last season form and turn into a key part of the side.

Hojlund to shake off all the vitriol he’s certain to receive - ludicrous sum for a kid from an amateur league etc. - and net 25 in his debut season.

If you said this last season I’d have given you the sandwich toaster but saying it this season is a bit of a cop out

Stop that
:)

it probably is Sancho. I can’t really think of anyone else who fits the bill. I don’t think Antony is a fair pick cause he actually had a decent debut season and I’d expect him to kick on well this year anyway.

Martial? :nervous:

Martial? That’s locked in.

Probably around the time the players voted him player of the year, as a right back. Or when Mourinho called him the best right back in the world and made him our captain and won the Europa League.

Lindelof? :nervous: You know he did play pretty well with Martinez at one point last season and although Varane is easily our first choice there is always the fitness concern with him.

Agree with most about Antony but i wanted to pick someone a bit less obvious.

I almost chose Lindelof myself before opting for Sancho. I think it’s a great shout and in the spirt of the thread.

Well done, I award you 3 Pexbollas to spend how you wish around the site

Yet none of those things equate to him being a “brilliant RB”

Somewhere @golden_blunder probably just threw up in his mouth a little bit sensing a disturbance in the Lindelforce.

In your opinion. In others he was. Welcome to the Internet have a good time
I know the number of a good doctor I can recommend to those people so they can seek help.

But honestly there are I would think a few candidates that could come through to win it. Hopefully no more robberies like that season Fred should have won it.

I think with a proper 9 that Bruno will start banging goals in again

I pronounce that currency useless around here.

Martial feels like the pick here just because Ten Hag seems to like him and the striker we signed is only 20, but picking a striker who's allergic to the 6 yard box seems like a bad idea, even if Martial was somehow healthy enough to play 30 times in the league.

I do like Malacia on the ball a lot and an Onana-Malacia-Lisandro trio could be really good in possession, but Shaw would have to get hurt. But it feels like people don't rate him yet but the keeper is a good fit for him as he seems to struggle when we don't have the ball but good short passer, composure and poise when we do.

Not sure I'd go so far as to say 'incredibly confident', but otherwise I'd agree with you here on Antony. I do think he was generally better than given credit for last season in the sense that what he was doing was helping the team even when on the individual level he wasn't playing well, but I do think that he'll step up further this season.

In the unlikely event that Martial actually stays fit for a decent portion of the season I'd probably change my pick to him though.

I want to say Antony but Hojlund's aerial ability looks shite in the analysis videos I've watched. I'll go with AWB. Our right hand side can only go onwards and upwards, I suppose.

“Which unlikely player will prove themselves to fans this season?”

It will be Martinez this year.
Rashford.
I'll go with Luke Shaw
I think with a proper 9 that Bruno will start banging goals in again
No one read the OP apparently...

I'll go with Donny. With a more fluid midfield who knows, the ability is there. Liked his pre-season and as we all know, that's close to a guarantee for success.

I think Dalot will hit the ground running again and hopefully not got injured like last year. Versus 'lesser teams' I think he brings so much more in attack than AWB and will help us score more with our new number 9.
