US Recognises Kosovo

Not a suprise. The EU is still divided, but if the countries in the EU that are reluctant to recognise Kosovo do recognise Kosovo after the meeting where the member nations are supposed to discuss this it will just prove once again how much of an American powertool the EU is.

Not really. The rest of the EU wants to recognize them, they're not just doing it cos the Americans say so.

Bulgaria and Slovenia don't want to, Romania's not too keen especially with Moldova and Transylvania to worry about. Cyprus and Spain are uneasy about their breakaway regions too.

I strongly believe that most of them, and especially Germany and the UK, are doing it because it's being expected of them to do so.

Amazing how people come up with more and more new nationalities. This article is talking about the "Kosovans". What on earth is a Kosovan!

You don't have to be a nation to be a group. For instance, people from Manchester are called Mancunians. People from Kosova are Kosovans, or Kosovars. They've been calling them that since well before today.

Slovakia, I meant.

That's what I thought, considering Slovenias embassy in Belgrade was vandalized yesterday as was the US embassy. The police did a good job actually to prevent any more serious damage to the US embassy.

"Ninety per cent of Kosovo's two million people are ethnic Albanian and they see no reason to stay joined to the rest of Christian Orthodox Serbia."

I just find it so bizzare that a journalist can write down something like this and I have read that same sentence in The Times I believe. What is that supposed to mean?? There are probably hundreds of small, little minority groups around the globe who see no reason in staying within officially recognized borders. So what??

We should be talking about taking down boundries, not creating more.

The World is populated by morons.

I disagree here, the EU is Americas whore and it's also very practical for the US that the EU exists. They don't have to talk with all the leading european powers when giving out directions.

You seem to be stating that the EU was set up by the US to further its own interests, or have I got you wrong here?

I don't think EU was intended to become a powertool of the US when it was first established in the 50s, but it is a powertool today.

Also can anyone explain to me what kind of international communities an independent Kosovo can enter? I know that they will never be able to enter the UN.

There are many reasons why the EU exists, but being America's whore is not on the list.

Anyone who thinks so is a conspiracy theory nut

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's just an opinion formed on the basis of how the EU has been acting in the last couple of years.

Conveniently ignoring 2002 and 2003, and the bust up over Iraq.

Sorry, but that's just silly.

We'll see over time, I'm pretty sure that Turkey will enter the EU and that even the Austrians will accept them entering the union and it won't be because they want it to be that way.

I suppose the difference is that they've succeeded. International relations are largely about realpolitik. The Kosovars have basically succeeded, the Palestinians have nearly succeeded, the Basques are still a fair way off, the Chechens have been decimated and failed.

Silliness. The US finds the EU helpful in some respects, a genuine irritant in others.

We should be talking about taking down boundries, not creating more.

Maybe. But doesn't it reassure you at all that the US and Britain have basically set up a Muslim state? Implies they're not at war with Islam, as such.

Speaking of Germany, it's been sad to witness the constant pussyfication of the German people since the 80s.

That is genuinely spastic.

I see no German troops in Iraq.

The US can't decide which countries troops to send where.

I think we have a different perspective on what we consider to be puppet states.

Plech first of all there are no Kosovars, they are Albanians.

And also, it is not that they have succeeded but that the American have suceeded. That is so crystal clear. The whole issue today is if you are good with the US then you will succeed. If you are not good with the US than you will suck big time.

Troops at all would be nice. Assuming puppet states at least entertain serious requests.

What's your definition of puppet state then? Not constantly being in opposition?

What makes you say this?

Germany has genuinely gotten better at wielding soft power. The problem is that they swing a little too much with the wind, and depending on which politician is Chancellor.

No, you don't get to legislate that unfortunately. I don't mean to rub it in on a day of national mourning, but whether you recognise their state or not, the re is a region called Kosovo, and in English people from that region are called Kosovars or Kosovans.

Agreed 100%

Well, before they were "pussies", they were Nazis, like their friends the Croats. I thought you lot were meant to have long memories?
