Sorry, i went back to watch the game.

For anything to do with Australian football,

<a href="http://www.theworldgame.com.au" target="_blank">www.theworldgame.com.au</a>

Full-time:

Uruguay 3 - 0 Australia

Aggregate score:

Uruguay 3 - 1 Australia

Another World Cup qualifying campaign is down the drain, will we ever qualify for one, 1974 remains our only ever occasion where we made it.

I think FIFA will have to give us direct qualification or we will have to host the darn thing before we can get there.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was the last time Frank Farina leads the Socceroos, his contract is up after this game, and apparently plenty of clubs in Serie B are interested in him that can play top dollar, well a lot more than SA can pay

The 2nd half was much brighter for Australia for 25 minutes at least. Australia got themselves back into the game and were able to start gaining some possession and were able to string consecutive passes. How Mark Viduka missed that header i will never know. It would have made all the difference. Mark was very quiet in all three games.

I guess its the same reason that every one hates United because they are always winning everything else, and they come across as being arrogant, kind of like Viduka personified, So yeah I 'm well glad Australia got their arses kicked

I'm disgusted at the behaviour of the Uruguans! the whole atmosphere of the game was incredibly intimidating. If oz had won who knows what uruguay would have done?? burnt their own stadium down???

i'm gutted for Oz, it would have been brilliant for our region, oceania to have a team at the world cup, feck knows its been long enough since that happened! (NZ in '82...)

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Soccer Australia was hoping for qualification to ease crippling 1.7 million dollar (850,000 US) debts and with a lifeline to the World Cup finals in Japan and Korea now not available, the avenue for serious money-making games has disappeared until at least 2005.
(?) I was not aware of this!It was Australia's first loss in a World Cup qualifying match since a 1-0 defeat in 1993 to Argentina in Buenos Aires.
But they still didnt get through :(

Gazza..welcome to the hell that is not an automatci spot up for grabs...we always lose as we only get one chance.

Socalred...yu're entitled to your opinion but I thik it's a bit misinformed. Viduka is one of the most easygoing and friendly Australian soccer stars. He is not arrogant at all.

To be honest Australia were well beaten by a better team and don't deseve to qualify. Australia is not a "soccer" country. The only Adelaide radio station to broadcast the "biggest game in Australian soccer history" only played the first half and went to the normal breakfast show instead of the second. Our top rating sports show was more interested in the AFL draft. I only met two people today who watched the game, one Italian and one English. Both expressed the sam e thoughts that it was great that our "home country" had qualified and it would have added extra interest if Oz had qualified as well. How can a country with such indifference to football deserve the right to qualify over footy mad Uruguay. The NSL is a sham, the international team play 2 or 3 meaningful games every 4 years.
I am dissappointed that they didn't qualify but if you can't beat the 5th ranked S American or the 5th ranked Asian team when it really counts then you just don't deserve it.

Rant over :(

I am really worried what is going to happen to football in this country. Soccer Australia were banking on us making the World Cup and the financial rewards that came with that.

I am so sick to death of people here in Melbourne trying to compare football with Aussie Rules. Last week at the match i hate to sit near absolute dickheads who complained when we passed the ball back to Schwarzer, claiming that was not the way to play sport to go backwards, people claiming that the game was boring and it would be much better if the off-side rule was abolished.

Unfortunately Australia will always be at the disadvantage that our top players all player in overseas competitions and they rarely make the trip down to Australia. The players assmeble one week before the biggest matches whereas Uruguay have been playing hard competitive games leading up to the qualifier. A friendly against France will never be enough to get the lads ready for the challenge.

But Uruguay deserve to be there, we don't. we were lucky to still be in it at half-time, it could have easily be 3 - 0 at half-time.

Everyone down here keeps talking about we are a big country, which is true, we have over 19 million here compared to Uruguay's 3 million or so. Difference is, there are about 3 million Uruguian people who play football and i doubt we have that number here.

Our NSL will never threaten AFL or NRL or cricket for that matter. Added to that is that a lot of these clubs down here are based on nationalities.

ie, Melbourne Knights - Croatia
South Melbourne - Greece

Growing up and i dare have a guess most other young kids growing up here in Melbourne who are not Greek or Croatian are not going to follow these clubs and hence not follow football at all and will turn to AFL etc. I was lucky that my family were long time United supporters and they introduced me to the game, but if there background was non-football, i probably would have never become involved with football.

I have fears that we will not have a NSL in say 10 years time. The only timefootball dominates over here are two months out of every 48 months. World Cup time and when Australia is at the last hurdle to qualify for the World Cup.

Granted, it was a very good side that we had, but the level of competition they face each week at club level aint the greatest compared to a team like Uruguay.
