upgrading my ps2

CEX in Manchester had a second hand one in there when I was on my day trip

If you get a few good games on a PS3 you arent gonna want to play your old PS2 games due to the fact that they just don't compare.

I was just gonna say as well just because you have 70 games for the PS2 then likelihood of playing them on a PS3 would be quite slim.
I for one bought a 60GB PS3 with the intention of playing PS2 games on it as well however have not played one, the three PS3 games I have have kept me occupied for long enough, hell I have yet to break open COD 4!!
So given the chance of getting a 40GB instead of a 60GB and saving 50-60 quid I probably would have done that, not to mention the 40GB is reportably quieter as well.

Buy the console depending on what games you want,

Generally id say the 360 edges it with the titles released, though if you like your metal gears and final fanatasies, then you might wanna hold out for a PS3.

PSN (ps3's version of xbox live) is free but is no where near as good or as well structured as xbox live; you have to pay for xbox live but I do think you are getting your moneys worth with only £40 a year.

Only the current 40gb models dont play PS2 games, you can fish out an old 60gb model which does have backward compatibility or wait for the 80gb bundles which supposedely do so is well.

Personally if you were to go for only one, id say the 360 based on its current titles and in my opinion, superior online gaming. However if you're clearly a fan of the Sony consoles and the usual titles, then stick with a PS3. Eitherway you'll still get your fair share of decent titles since both formats receive the likes of Call of Duty, GTA, etc and both have very good exclusives (Xbox 360 with Gears of war, Mass effect, Project Gotham, Halo 3 etc and PS3 with god of war, MGS, final fantasy, killzone, Gran Turismo...and so on)

Again this comes up. What exactly does Live have that the PSN doesn't that makes it nowhere near as good?

I'll happily explain my reasons:

1) Voice chat - 90% of all xbox live users at least have a headset on, they come free with the console. PSN users wishing to communicate online will have to seperately dish out on a bluetooth headset, and if you play PSN games online theres barely a word spoken.

2) Easy friend-list system, you can very easily arrange games, video conversations and many more with mates within seconds, this isnt as accessible on PSN.

3) Better downloadable content, movies, music, huge range of demos, gamerpics, etc etc

4) Buying stuff online/sorting out suscription is alot easier, as far as I know only the 360 offers vouchers you can buy in stores which redeem points or an xbox live suscription. You have to put up with credit card hassling on PSN.

thats just me getting started.

Thats not always a bad thing.

my biggest laughs on the likes of cod3/4 is listening to some of the idiots who are playing the same game. mainly at 12 year old yanks or rude boys spitting rhymes whilst they play.

You better start some more then because

1) I don't necessarily think that is a good thing, and it's not a limitation of the network. Have you ever played Warhawk with is farm of dedicated servers?

2) Exists in the PS3 firmware, it's up to games to use it. Again, not a limitation of the PSN. However, with the release of home, I think that the shoe will be on the other foot.

3) Highly subjective, although SCEE are not as good as the other two regions in this respect. Yeas, there are no movies or music on the PS Store, surprising considering how large Sony is as a media publisher.

4) Buying stuff online is easier? How? I go to what I want, click, click again, it's there? Vouchers exist.

You've not made any valid points as to why Live is much better than the PSN, and in fact missed the key feature that separates how both are used, but again is not a limitation of the network, but rather what is in the firmware, and that is game forced entry into the messaging part of the XMB, and possibly the quality of the XMB messenger itself. As said, the functionality is in the firmware, games just have to use it.

I think an interesting point to consider is why a Windows Live does not exist for the PC in the same way that XBox Live does for the console. Because you can bet you life on it, that Microsoft want it that way.

Gears of war (and probably all other conversions now) do use a live system of account and logging in (mulitplayer too, although I've not used it). So they are probably heading down the paying for it on the PC route soon too.
