Unpopular opinion: Ronaldo will be a huge miss

 In my defense, I’ve said that I don’t see him as #9 and if anything this game has proven it right when he was moved to the left the space opened up for him. That’s why I created a thread yesterday suggesting he can deliver for us by playing off the Cavani rather than being a lone striker as majority on here seem to think

This is nonsense. He scored 2 goals when the Portuguese coach finally brought on a wide player who could put a decent ball into the box and then Ronaldo got himself into the middle and scored 2 headers. Him playing off the left and trying to whip in balls for assorted Portuguese midgets was a really bad tactic.

1. His wages will stretch the frontier which agents will be able to explore when dealing with us over contract extensions in the future (we have seen this in the past already with Sanchez, Pogba, DDG). See Barca.

2. Non-existent defensive contributions will impact our shape and will put an immense pressure on our midfielders. Everyone could see the difference between Cavani and Martial last season and how it impacts our ability to press effectively from the front.

3. He can’t play with his back at all and do the hold-up as he only operates well in spaces since he’s not your classic #9.

4. In case he’ll be performing poorly Ole will shy away to change him due to his status and ego in order not to upset him, which will hinder our team.

I personally feel he’ll end up being a costly mistake for us (taking away the balance that Cavani brings) and Ole (will ultimately lose the job as a result) when you don’t look through the euphoria lenses. I may be underestimating Ronaldo greatly here but this is my feeling with respect to this transfer, having watched him play these last few seasons where he struggled to influence the games when he’s not scoring penalties or poaching goals are not on.

Can we do a poll on this?

On what serious basis have u drawn this glass half full bullsh1t? Peeps keep forgetting he played on the left at juve, so there is defo scope for Cavani and Ronaldo to play together in some games. He also scores goals. Lots of them. Viva Ronaldo you miserable bugger!

Well this aged well (an hour an a half!)

Tip to us all, don’t try and be smart so you can say “I told you so”. and don’t start threads mid game

1.) No. Ronaldo is a special case, he is one of the best players of all time, and is a marketer's dream. He's worth his wages to United just for his commercial appeal, regardless of what he does on the pitch. Just because he gets incredibly (and deserved) wages, doesn't mean we will start to see crazy increases in wages of other players on United's squad. In fact, I think United is learning a lesson in that players on obscene wages are near impossible to sell, and United will start being more careful on wages, especially those of fringe players. With Woodward gone, I fully expect United to be better in terms of negotiating fewer ridiculous contracts to players.

2.) Don't care if he slacks off defensively from time to time. He's here to score goals. The rest of team will have to pick up some of the slack.

3.) Not really bothered. Again, the team can adjust their play style to accommodate Ronaldo.

4.) You don't know that.

I personally feel his value is primarily going to be the lift that he gives the players and the fans. The players are going to work harder and become better players. Many United players probably will be in awe of Ronaldo, and that's just going to mean they are going to give it their all in training and on the pitch. Not to mention, he gives the team an edge mentally as United know even in the tough games, give him 1/2 a chance and he will bury it. Keep a clean sheet and Ronaldo will win it for you. I'm just hoping that he gives a lift to the club the same way Cantona did. I just want to see the players fight for one another every time on the pitch and give it their all and Ronaldo will be leading by example. He's a winner and United need more players with that attitude.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The guys an animal and a world class footballer. That’s what matters ultimately

I think you’ll probably be right. I want it work badly but it’s pretty clear I have my doubts about how we get it all working especially against the better teams and I hope I’ve explained why in this thread. It’s not just a knee jerk. I kind of said it on the day he signed but parked it up. Rest assured I won’t be shouting shite any time he blanks, I want him to win it all with us again.

i hope he can be the catalyst for success but I’m not sure we need a poacher. We are 17th in the league for successful open play crosses since last season so we majorly need to step that up if we want to take advantage of his considerable threat in the air.

OP needs to finish his paper round first before starting a thread

You would like to think Ronaldo had done enough in his career to earn at least 10 games for us before we got threads like this anyway.
Honestly you would think we had just resigned a 45yo Obertan or something, the way some of you go on.

Hopefully his 2 match winning goals tonight will give him a few days leeway on here. Jesus wept.

People who hold unpopular opinions always think they're insightful & interesting.
Same with those who are always negative, thinking it equates to high level critical thinking. Oh, and they are objective of course.

I have my doubts also, they just don’t begin and end with our better players. Now we have a glut of actual world class players our lack of cohesion and success cannot be blamed on one player, as it has been for years. We can’t have a team with Maguire, Varane, Shaw, Pogba, Bruno, Ronaldo, Sancho, Rashford and Greenwood and play like we have played in the last two games. It isn’t acceptable but I have concerns that Ronaldo won’t make much difference to those performances. What he will do more often than any other player we have is make a difference.

After all the years of Moyes, Van Gaal, Di Maria, post peak Rooney,Mourinho, Lingard and Sanchez, you'd like to think everyone who is a Manchester United fan would be super pumped about Ronaldo's return. We have a serial winner finally. Just look at Ibrahimovic's season here. If he could somewhat make a good difference, what do you think Ronaldo will do ?

He’s just broken the all time international goal scoring record…

Genius OP

To be fair those stats are a bit misleading. He really was anonymous for most of the game tonight, especially the first hour or so, but came up with the goods in the end.
As he was more than a few times for us in his first stint here.
At the end of the day the only 'stat' in football that matters is the final score. And more often than not Ronaldo will have an effect on the final score.

"Just a poacher"

Those stats are entirely consistent with being “just a poacher”. The only non-poacher looking stat is 100% long passes. Which means nothing without knowing how many.

51 touches maybe high-ish for a poacher? But Portugal had 69% posession so this also needs context. How does it compare with other Portugese players (that stayed on the pitch for 96 minutes)

Supposedly he was shite tonight according to a few on here.I'll take 35 similar performances in the league.

Yeah, he was pretty and so was Bruno. O'Shea had him in his pocket until he went off injured, then he even struggled against a 19 year old who doesn't even get a game at Norwich.

But he came up with the goods at the end and that's all that matters really. If he plays like that every week and still scores goals, I'm sure most people won't be too bothered.

Completely agree

This. Just fecking try to enjoy something about the club you support for a change.

I swear there would still be threads like these if we won another treble.

Even if thats what he was now (and he clearly isnt if you watched his time at Juve, or even tonight for Portugal) did that stop people loving Ruud?, did that stop Ruud being an amazing striker?.
I mean does it really make any difference if you score a goal by beating 3 opposing players then smashing a 30 yard shot in the top corner, as oppose to doing a tap in from 2 yards?.
A goal is a goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo a poacher. Only on Internet forums. You’re gonna watch him play more often now that he signed for United so you’ll have enough time re-evaluate.

You know I get the people and pundits that say he won’t be putting up insane numbers etc but Paul Mersin was the funniest he said he’s 36 he’s not the same he won’t run down the wing past players, it made me laugh he hasn’t done that in years.
The reason Ronaldo is so good is that he plays too his strengths and covers the weaknesses that have came with age

Surely people have learned by now not to make a thread until after the game

1. His wages will stretch the frontier which agents will be able to explore when dealing with us over contract extensions in the future (we have seen this in the past already with Sanchez, Pogba, DDG). See Barca.

Can we do a poll on this?

1. I agree it’s been an issue in the past, but this guy is the goat and no other player expect to get near his salary. It’s like my telling my boss I expect to be paid the same salary as the CEO.

2. I don’t personally see this as a big issue when you play with one number 9. It annoys me when our forwards aren’t in the six yard box when a cross comes in because they were previously tracking back. I expect to see considerably more crosses converted now.

3. He probably doesn’t have the link up play of cavani, but he has other benefits to his game such as drawing more defenders (doubling up) and opening up space for other players.

4. Ole won’t sub him and I wouldn’t either. He can play bad and still score 2 goals to win the match, as we saw tonight.

What i know is he's going to have to score, cause when he doesn't it's a mess. Given he's arguably the greatest goal scorer ever that shouldn't be to big an issue. A front 2 of Bruno and Ronaldo scares me somewhat. We should've sold Cavani, he could play Ronaldo out of the team. He's more intense and he also scores goals.

Tbh there's two things at play here.

1. His performance on the pitch.

2. How he elevates everyone around him and shows them the mentality needed to win.

The second point is the reason I want him. I want him to teach everyone what the standards are needed to win. The last person at the club that had these standards was SAF.

I don't really get the critique regarding Ronaldo's pressing as it relates to our team.

We don't even press that much.

We've been middle of the pack under Ole in regards to pressing thus far.
