United wants Lassana Diarra?

Surprised so many are pro this, this is the same lad that played for Portsmouth like 10 years ago?
The same lad who played four seasons for Real Madrid, yes.

He's free, experienced and is one of the best around at providing cover for the defence, and has worked with Mourinho before. It makes a lot of sense. If we're looking at playing Rooney (or Pogba  ) in midfield, we'll need Diarra's defensive abilities to balance the team.

For some reason i thought he was like 36 years old but he's still 'only' 31.

Manchester United & Chelsea have made offers for Lassana Diarra

Premier League sides Manchester United and Chelsea have made concrete offers for Marseille defensive midfielder Lassana Diarra, according to BeIN Sports.

The player had previously had an agreement with Marseille President Vincent Labrune to leave for free this summer, but OM seem to have changed their mind in that regard and will now demand some form of fee in order for the player to leave the club.

Diana still has three years remaining on his current Marseille contract and in addition to the Premier League sides that have bid, Inter Milan and Spartak Moscow (the latter he has turned down) have also lodged bids.

More to follow in the coming days.

He has not been injured a lot every single season, you have his injury record on this page. And he is better now at 31 than he was before.
That's a lot of injuries and it's an incomplete list, not to mention that he didn't even play football in 14/15 because of his suspension. He should finish his career back in France where it's comfortable because his time abroad has been anything but.

Decent squad cover I suppose. Particularly if we're planning on selling a midfielder.

Yes and see what happened to Portsmouth after he left :wenger:

What happened? Haven't heard anything about him for years, assumed he'd retired or was playing in Quatar

He used to be a bit of a headless chicken but he really has matured into a quality player. I'm not a massive fan of defensive midfielders who're more interested in holding onto the ball endlessly instead of playing the simple pass, but if Mourinho needs a physical holding midfielder then he fits nicely.

I'm not surprised. If the papers reported that Pirlo was moving to England they'd all want him. He's nearly 40. It's not what they can do for us that matters, but what they've done in the past.

There another 2 Diarras, one is 34, one is 35. All three Diarras primarily play defensive midfielder.

He's just come off playing the best season of his career.

But the difference is Diarra just had a cracking season (well the first half anyway), and he wouldn't cost much.

I'm worried about Morgan if Lass coming. While I think that Lass still a very good dm, I really want Morgan to succeed here. Not all player straight away become success after one season. Much like most of tv series out there. Decent 1st season, then boom for seasons afterwards.

Or get cut after the first season. It could happen, De Telegraaf state both Schneiderlin and Koeman would be open to reacquaint.

31 years of age, I can see the logic in bringing in Ibra but not Diarra.

For free I don't have any complaints with the season he's had.

Just you watch, knowing us, Diarra will come in and be the best of the summer transfers for us. That seems to be the way with us and big/exciting signings.

Always liked Lass. Haven't seen him recently but at Madrid he wasn't too bad.

He is one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment. Only second to Busquets really in the role/position he plays in. Very technical, crisp passing, huge workrate, and incredible positional sense.

But with the Carrick renewal, i can't see us going for him. Unless we sell Blind, which would be stupid.

Has been mentioned even by Sky as being up for sale

By Sky, really ? Sh*t. God i hope it isn't true, and just speculation over the fact that Jose supposedly doesn't like lightweight players.

They reported early on that Blind and Mata were for sale. Later on some other outlets seem to have added Rojo to that list.

I wouldn't be too fussed over Mata, and i hope Rojo leaves asap, but Blind i really like, he is the most clever player in the squad, good technique, very adaptable, and he wears his heart on his sleeve too. One of our best performers last season, i really don't see the sense in selling him. Maybe Mourinho wants to get rid of the LVG favourites to assert his influence as he's known to do.

I tend to agree

Who can say no to this guy on a free?

This, Lass Diarra had improved massively since the time he was with Real Madrid. I never rate him back then 'cause he was "stupid" for his role. Wasted chance, feck up positions due to hold onto the ball for too long. Last season, in Maseille and France shirt, he matured. Can see the same technique, run, tackle,... but it's like different player the way he played.

For all the people who say we're stuffed in the deep lying defensive midfielder role, then they probably can tell the difference between the Carrick's role in his first season for us vs the Carrick's who carried the whole midfield for us in SAF's last season. Or Carrick's role in LVG's first season and Carrick's role vs Arsenal away in LVG's second season (LVG saw that Carrick failed in a newer role and later had to compromise Carrick to his best role). Similar thing can be said about Schneiderlin role for Southampton vs his role for us. All in all we may still have few options in this role, but all have issue, and Lass Diarra on the form he has for Masseille is perfect solution, short term.
