United wants Lassana Diarra?

A disciplined holding player that Jose has worked with before, if the plan is for the 4-3-3 with Pogba and Rooney as the #8's then he'd make a good and hopefully cheap option for the DM protection I guess.

Makes no sense, he's on the same level as Schneiderlin albeit more experienced.

Matic/Kante should be our goal.

Can play a role Jose desires in the team. On a freebie, not a risk & very good at what he does. Certainly not an exciting player, but a can be a very solid base for the midfield, had a very good season 2015/16 as I know.

I thought this was a thread bump from 2007.

Lol yeah United have been linked on and off with Lass forever. I dont put much stock in the rumor though with Mou at the helm it is a little more plausible. As Devil said Jose knows him and what he is capable of, so to add him as a cheap DM rotation player (especially if Schneiderlin is gone and cash isn't spent to replace him) then it's an ok move.

Kante is better but for free, and Mo has worked with him before? maybe

Kante has had a great season, but I think Diarra is better than him. Better on the ball for a start, and has also had a great season. If he were fit, Kante would be a sub for France.

Really wanted us to sign him when he was at Portsmouth, not sure how he's doing these days, seems to have gone a bit downhill after leaving Madrid.

Deschamps looks to have rated him higher seeing as he was ahead of Kante and Schneiderlin only made the team because Lass got injured at the last second. Not saying this is proof that one is better out right, but that decision speaks volumes

When was the last time we were linked with him? Was in the Summer of Moyes?

I'm not sure about him, but I love Jose's pragmatism.

He's thinking of getting the job done, I know people want Matic / Kante etc... but this is not FM, we'd probably ended up with no one if we keep one chasing top tier player.

I'd rather a functional player that suits the system this year rather than keep on waiting for the cavalry that ain't gonna come. A Diarra in hand is better than a Kante in French.

Wasn't he ahead of Kante and Schneiderlin for France before he got injured? Would be a smart signing on a free

He had a wonderful season and would've been a starter for France ahead of Kante, but a player of his age returning after such serious injury... Not the safest bet

M.E.N. said him and Jose don't get on that well and not to read much into it.

Lassana Diarra open to reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United
France international Lassana Diarra has opened the door to a possible reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, claiming there's a clause in his Marseille contract would allow him to leave for free this summer.

Mourinho is widely expected to be made United manager on Tuesday following Louis van Gaal's departure and Diarra, who played under the Portuguese at Chelsea and Real Madrid, is open to the idea of working with the 52-year-old again.

Numerous changes have been flagged for the Red Devils squad that failed to gain Champions League qualification and, regardless of who takes over from Van Gaal, the chance to sign an experienced defensive midfielder like Diarra for free will not go unnoticed.

"I am a free agent," the 31-year-old toldL'Equipe. "There is a clause in my contract that allows me to leave if we did not qualify for European football.

"I do not want to enter a war with Marseille and I don't think there will be one. I hope Marseille will stick to their word.

"I will never forget Marseille and the fans, who showed me a lot of affection. I do not know yet where I will play next season. I am calm about my future, there's time. I have not signed for PSG.

"Mourinho? I know him well. I have enjoyed some great times with him. He is a coach I really like. But we will see what happens next season."

Can't he also play right back? I think it could be a good signing. He's a utility player and we haven't got many of those at the moment.

He is in Ligue 1 best XI by merit.

He has aged well as supposed to arrive at his peak now. Better than ever. Only realize he is a freebie!

For all the Kante comparison. Kante role is not deep holding midfielder role. He is more of a defensive in a double pivot holding midfielder system. He has first few games in the Makelele role in France shirt now since Lassana Diarra injury, but very inexperienced in this new role. He did well for most part, but showed the inexperience in the. Ireland game where he seems to be dragged into action and left space where his role should be there to screen those areas.

Used to not rate Lassana in the past when people have this Makelele comparison about him! He used to play in Kante esque role and had a bit of issue about attitude IIRC. Seems to fix that now and showed he has grown up to the Makelele role this time.

I haven't heard of him in a while, but apparently he was excellent last season and nominated for one of the POTY along with Zlatan, Di Maria, and Ben Arfa.

Giroud is ahead of Martial, doesn't mean I would take him instead!

Well, Payet is actually ahead of Martial.
And Benzema is also ahead of Giroud if not for the scandal. It's a decision to stabilize the the squad, and make them focus and unite for the tournament.

I don't understand why people bringing this kind of cross comparison argument on no merit.

True. Rather judge each player on their own merits, personally.

Just realize Lassana Diarra is qualified as homegrown. Would be worth to spoil Chelsea on that reason alone so that they're stuck with a small squad. In this case he's a freebie and very good too in a role we look like lacking.

We need to get him signed up and then go for Gaitan.

Might as well as we are dragging up ancient transfer rumours lol.

If he was a few years younger I'd have been content with the move, but at 31... Our midfield already has a few oldies.

Had a good season in Marseille but injury prone. Would've been in the EUROs if not for injury IIRC:
